The proposal submitted by the LMC Developmental Education Committee requested support for expanding and enhancing the professional development and assessment efforts provided by DE Teaching Communities. The grant proposal also included plans to produce a staff development  curriculum handbook and course-level assessment  guide , both of which will be useful to the GE Teaching Communities working on the assessment of critical thinking. In addition, the grant would provide funds for the creation of a multi-media website which will include  virtual Teaching Communities and provide a forum for DE instructors to close the assessment loop by sharing instructional materials and strategies that address assessment findings. What we learn about setting up and maintaining a virtual Teaching Community will also be of potential use in other assessment arenas on campus. : The GE Committee is still working on converting the GE criteria to program-level student learning outcomes and writing associated assessment criteria. They hope to finish this work this semester. The GE Committee will oversee three assessment pilots in SP 05. The Ethic/Multicultural TC will be analyzing samples of student work across sections on a common critical thinking assignment keyed to the video series on racism. The Creative Arts and Humanities TC will finalize their template assignment this semester and will write a common rubric and administer their critical and creative thinking assignment in several courses in the spring. The Social Science TC has begun preliminary discussions this semester and will formally be  lit in the spring. : The Occ. Ed. Committee has discussed approaches to assessment at several of their meetings this semester. Pam reported that the Occ. Ed. Committee supports the TLP recommendation of defining Occ. Ed. as a program for the purposes of assessment. They plan to write a set of overarching program learning outcomes. They are striving to keep the work on assessment meaningful by attending a variety of staff development activities before formalizing program-level learning outcomes. He provided some useful matrices for  mapping how and where outcomes are addressed so that there are multiple and layered opportunities for students to develop the understanding, behavior, habits of mind, ways of knowing, and dispositions valued at both the institution and program level. 1h/ =!"#$% The FA 03 program review asked departments to state program learning outcomes and report on attempts to assess those outcomes. Accreditation requires that SLO assessment be part of program evaluation. We need to figure out how to int~ 24 6  '***:,V111$   hrs for assessment. We might want to put this on the next TLP agenda. A special note: This meeting dazzled and amazed the Assessment Queens, who were SO impressed by the quantity and caliber of work reflected in the updates.
