Judging from the presentations, we are still ahead of the curve on our progress with regard to the institutionalization of SLO assessment. Very few presentations focused on closing the loop. Cindy and Nancys presentation on GE assessment was well-received, and they are starting to be contacted by other community colleges who are interested in replicating the professional development approach to assessment in GE. Myras presentation on assessment in the Developmental Math Program was interactive and focused on ways that program has responded to assessment results with professional development activities. Santa Barbara City College math faculty who attended the presentation invited her to present at SBCC in the spring. Kiran attended the CCCOEA Conference, which had a basic skills focus this year. Barbara Illowsky presented on behalf of the Basic Skills Initiative. Accountability has taken on new meaning as 5 core indicators for evaluating occupational program success in Perkins IV has replaced VATEA. Programs that do not show improvements in core indicators will submit a remediation plan. If core indicators dont improve, funding will be cut in the second year. This is a significant change from past practice under VATEA. Foundation for Critical Thinking Workshop ( Nancy) Shall we send an Ӱɴý team to this conference which will be held in Berkeley Feb.29-March 2? Can we fund it? We endorsed this idea. Gil, Nancy, and Cindy will work with the GE Committee to coordinate the details, such as: recruiting for the workshop tapping various funding sources (e.g. professional development funds allocated to the college and currently distributed by the Office of the President) planning the post-workshop meeting on campus for participants to share what they learned Updates Student Services ( Gail): The Student Services SLO Committee has met once this semester. The meeting was devoted to recapping the work from the previous year. The group plans to meet every two weeks for the rest of the semester with the goal of flushing out assessment plans for each of the Student Service units. In other words, they are approaching assessment from the program-level, though many of the plans will be focused on program SLOs that are aligned with the same ISLO. In other words, we will be able to use these projects for ISLO assessment. Myra will attend these meetings to offer support to Student Service units as they think through the details of their assessment plans. Since we do not have a completed Student Services assessment project yet, we will try to fast track a few units so that we have something from this area for accreditation reporting next fall. Oc.Ed ( Kiran and Len): no progress since last fall; the annual update to program review is providing a catalyst for getting this group back to work on assessment. The Occ. Ed. committee plans to devote 3 meetings this semester to program-level assessment plans. Myra will attend these meetings to offer support; she also plans to meet individually with Occ. Ed. department chairs who request help. We will also try to fast track a few programs so that we have more from this area for accreditation reporting. So far only the Nursing Dept. has completed an assessment project. As with Student Services, many of the Occ. Ed. program assessment projects will focus on the same ISLO and can thus be used for ISLO assessment. Library and Learning Services ( Ed and Cherry): Myra and Nancy met with Cherry, Christine, and Rosa to plan for the L&LSS work this semester and to discuss the connection to tutoring. Christine has designed an interesting assessment project for the library. She plans to analyze bibliographies in Eng. 100 papers to determine if students are applying research skills covered in the library orientation and to see if students are making effective use of the librarys web portal to journals, etc. This project, in addition to the already completed projects in the Reading & Writing Center and Math Lab, will make up the accreditation evidence from this area. General Education ( Cindy) Cindy reported on the response to the 11-year plan for GE Assessment at the recent College Assembly. The GE Committee is planning to have a forum to clarify the plan and continue the discussion about implementation. Nancy is meeting with GE department chairs who request her help. She is encouraging departments to align their assessment plans with the 11-year plan. TLP Follow Up to Program Review and Unit Planning Updates Fall 2007 Student Services? Does the TLP plan to provide feedback to Student Service units on their program reviews like we did with the academic programs? The process was time-consuming and cumbersome for the TLP Coordinators. Some TLP members reported that they got a lot out of participating in the process and supported its continuation. Should we begin to move forward on the Next Steps vision where the five committees under TLP take charge of assessment-related activities in their respective areas? Spring 2008 any response to Instructional Programs updated plans? 2 year SLO Assessment Cycle for Academic Programs We have not heard of any fall out from the requirement for assessment plans in the annual updates to program review. A question for the future: How is the BSI connected to closing the loop in GE and other assessment projects? %78 % s t !T!24XYn./0F1} "$]^_}`ֻhSNAhAhSNA5>* hA5>*huEhcC2h h-(hFvhAhA5>*h hA5>*h4ihA h4i5h hC]C5D&78 % s t 34Y & FgdcC2h^hgdFv & FgdAgdAgd4i$a$gdC]CY/0!"#$^_}_` & FgdSNA^gdSNA & FgdAgdFvh^hgdFv & FgdAgdA & FgdcC2LMNgdFv^gdFv & Fgd KLhAhFv,1h/ =!"#$% @@@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRi@R Table Normal4 l4a (k@(No List,&78 %st34Y/ 0 !"#$^_}_`LMN00000000000 00000000 000 0 0 00000 00 00 00 000000 000 0 00000Y 8
