All who attended the presentation agreed that Nancy was the star! The example of “closing the assessment loop” provided by агАЩДЋУН’s nursing department was the most memorable part of the entire presentation. Cancellation of the May 8th College Assembly on assessment: Myra and Humberto are attending a CalPASS presentation on 5/08. Since Myra and Nancy are joined at the hip, it is physically impossible for Nancy to do the college assembly alone, so it will be rescheduled for fall. Assessment presentation to SGC: Are we ducks or are we geese? If we are geese, have the other geese been duly consulted? If we are ducks, what’s the pecking order? Or is that for chickens? Say no more …. SGC will revisit the TLP drafts about committee charges in the fall. TLP members received a copy of the introductory material that Myra and Nancy wrote for SGC that provided rationale and a brief history of TLP work. Institutionalizing assessment efforts: Committees’ responses to TLP’s suggestions The following committees reviewed and approved the suggested changes to their charges: GE, DE, and Occ. Ed. Student Services Advisory Board will review the draft at their next meeting. Library and Learning Support Service Committee had their first meeting ever. At their second meeting the group will review the draft of suggested charges. Updates on assessment projects underway Library and Learning Support Services retreat: Ed facilitated a fabulous 1st meeting for this group. The following folks attended: Carol Love (math lab), Le Pham Le (English computer lab), Karen Stanton and James Spangnol (computer science lab), James Kolthoff (DSPS High Tech), Barbara Restani (business lab), Barbara Austin and Sandra Mills (Reading and Writing Center), Ed, Cherry, Myra, Nancy. The group discussed the accreditation standards for Library and Learning Support Services (L&LSS), heard a brief overview about TLP work and the assessment cycle, shared possible learning outcomes for lab services, and reviewed Ed’s draft of “institution-level” SLOs for L&LSS. The group will have their second meeting (or can we say family reunion at this point?) at the end of May. Nursing assessment report: WOW! Kirsten presented an impressive report on the Nursing Department’s assessment project. The project yielded some interesting findings and resulted in important changes in the sequencing of curriculum and the teaching and learning of a clinical skill. It also helped the nursing department address the recommendations from the Board of Registered Nurses. This was the college’s 1st Occ. Ed. assessment project. Assessment projects for Fall 2006 What assessment projects are being conducted in the fall? Next steps? DE: 14 instructors (10 English and 4 math) will participate in a DE Seminar focused on the “effective learner” SLO. These group will meet for a 2-day retreat on May 30 and 31, and 4 hours each month in the fall. The assessment results will be part of individual classroom-based research projects. GE: Ethnic Studies: collected 4 semesters of data from 6 courses and revised the assessment instrument. In the fall this group is “closing the loop” by producing a handbook on critical thinking for faculty teaching Ethnic and Multicultural Studies courses. Social Sciences: collected of data on critical thinking in 3 courses; plan to continue to meet in the fall but the focus may change from critical thinking to reading. Creative Arts and Humanities: collected data on critical thinking from 4 courses. Instructors have written assignments and rubrics according to a template developed by the group; they are individually developing webpages to document the impact of the Teaching Community on their teaching. Plan to continue to meet in the fall. Biological Sciences: will start an assessment pilot on critical thinking in BIOSC 5 in the fall. Occ. Ed: Child Development might be willing to conduct an assessment project, perhaps connected to their new Brentwood class being conducted in Spanish. Student Services: another retreat is planned for September 15th, with a focus on developing learning outcomes at the “program”/unit level. The WebAdvisor assessment pilot will also be continued.
