Agenda for today’s meeting was approved. Announcements Student Success Conference in Anaheim – October 1-3 Accreditation Site Visit – week of October 13 – the team will arrive on campus on Tuesday, Oct. 14 and conclude their visit on Thursday the 16th. The written report will be sent to the college in January 2009. Kiran announced that there is a new website for career pathways from high school to college. It can be viewed at  HYPERLINK "http://www.losmedanos.edu/cte" 207.62.229.15/cte Nancy announced that there will be a follow up report to the Basic Skills Initiative “Poppy Copy” literature review that will focus on the transition from high school to college as well as the transition from adult education to college. Updates on “Big 5” Institutional Assessment We began by reviewing the Accrediting Commissions’ rubric for Student Learning Outcomes and considering how we were measuring up in each of the Big 5 areas for institutional assessment. Occupational Education: Nancy attended a meeting of the occupational education committee on Sept. 9. She asked for brave volunteers to forward reports on the outcomes of their assessment plans earlier than the late November deadline for program review; these could then be placed on the TLP website to serve as models for others programs. She also asked for two even braver volunteers to serve as “assessment coaches” and help programs carry out assessment cycles over the next 2 years. Kiran added that Perkins IV funding would be used along with TLP funding to provide a stipend for this worked, if approved by the TLP. In total, $3,000 was requested from TLP funding to provide a stipend to two occupational education faculty to do this work for this year. It is expected that this funding will continue next year, as we are asking for a 2 year commitment from the faculty who step forward to be coaches. Developmental Education: Joellen reported on assessment efforts in English DE. The English faculty lead for these efforts this year is Katalina Wethington. The holistic scoring of English 90 papers – our capstone DE course- took place this August during flex week. The report has been posted on both the TLP and the DE websites. Unfortunately, the percentage of students assessed as not proficient had risen since our last assessment cycle. The department is currently discussing why this may be, and following up on plans to “close the loop” by responding to these findings. Our first step will be a closer look at the essay prompts being given by the multitude of instructors who teach the course, as well as a closer examination of how we are teaching the skill of synthesis- an area we emphasized in the new course outline of record and wrote into the rubric we used in assessing these papers- but have not yet sufficiently addressed in terms of pedagogy and curriculum. Joellen also discussed her plans to analyze departmental assessments using an equity lens per Equity Scorecard training. We tabled reports from the remaining 3 of the Big Five in order to have sufficient time to address program review forms which are going out early in October. Program Review Annual updates for program review will be sent out the first week in October. We reviewed the assessment plan grids and the TLP report form, as well as the 2 year cycle diagram that details where we should be each semester from Fall 2007- Spring 2009. We discussed possible changes to the planning (grid) and report form, and possible ways to integrate the two. We looked at how Len had used the grid to actually report out on his results and wondered if it suggested a way for other programs to streamline reporting efforts. Nancy said she would think through all the suggestions and send Gil the final report form in time for it to be included with the program review materials. Richard raised the question of how we will make sure all outcomes are assessed over time. Will programs be asked to select a different outcome to assess for each assessment cycle? Will they be asked to add a new outcome to the previous one and assess both? We agreed that we wouldn’t want a program to continually assess one outcome and never address others – so that is something we will need to consider for the next major program level assessment cycle which will begin with Fall 2009, according to our 2 year cycle plan. Plan for October and November Meetings Nancy asked for feedback on how the group would like to use committee time. Everyone seemed to like the “training” approach used in today’s meeting- looking at the rubric and the assessment cycle plan and seeing how it fit with our planning and reporting forms. They also liked past meetings in which we had a more in-depth report about assessments conducted in particular areas, like developmental education, for example.
