Public Comment and announcements: Scott announced that he was nervous about chairing a committee for the first time, but that would he would do his best. His goals for the semester are to learn the routine parts of the job and how to build an agenda. The agenda was approved with the addition of: Introductions after approval of minutes; Additional discussion of the All College Day Alexs Flex; Addition of discussion of articles at GE Committee meetings to #8; Addition of item #15 tasks and responsibilities; and Correction to date of todays meeting and #4 discussion of GE committee meetings, not Curriculum. The minutes from 5/13/10 were approved. Introductions made around the table. The GE Committee will meet on the following Fridays: Sept. 10; Oct. 8 & 22; Nov. 19 (third Friday); Dec. 10th. Fall Seminar Planning. A subcommittee of Scott, Alex, Liana, Karl, Cindy, Sara and possibly Janice will put together a plan for the September 20th GE Seminar. The following discussion and ideas were shared for the planning of this seminar: Provide a format that is central to diverse perspectives but skills presented in a safe and productive manner. We need to challenge the false dichotomy between traditional content and diverse perspectives and advocate for culturally responsive teaching. Baseline of teach, assess and report-out. Use CUE and IDEA strategies to address the performance gap. Use them further on in the seminar schedule and not for the initial seminar. Use of course syllabus as a welcome into the course and set the tone for presentation. (Part of CUE). COOR will give direction on assessment of diversity. Faculty want to know what to do. Team up with other faculty from your box and compare similarities and differences. Use an authentic assignment for exercise and write your plan around diversity and give perimeters for discussion. Have faculty show how their assignments meet the three GE SLO 5 bullets. Facilitators from previous seminars in RWS wrote reports. A form has been used that could be re-designed for this seminar. Get the faculty excited about assignments and share in a manner to launch the assessment. Be sure to address pedagogy in Fall 2011. Cindy will email form to committee used in previous seminars. Alex shared that his FLEX activity and All College Day activities did not work out. He will be presenting during the August 30th College Assembly Faculty Breakout Sessions. Janice, Scott and Liana shared about their activities for that date as well. Discussion on how to make the College Assembly more exciting for faculty included suggestions to have Michael Norris urge faculty to attend through an email, having food and encouraging your peers to attend. The Professional Development group is also working on this issue. GE Course Review: BIOSC 007 Tabled. This course was tabled for more information in GE SLO areas 4 & 5 at the April 22 meeting. The revised course would still benefit from a revision. The author has retired and the Department Chair made some updates for the version we are looking at today. A suggestion was to have Gil contact the Department Chair with the committees review. Possibly ask for the newly hired faculty in Environmental Science to work on the outline with departmental assistance and bring it back to GE for approval. The following suggestions were made for the revision: In GE SLO 1 Speaking is not clearly defined in the assessments-for GE approval it must have a speaking component. It was mentioned, but was weak in explanation. (This is a suggestion since it was not returned for this area previously). In GE SLO 4 & 5 Ethical Implications and Global Perspectives are still weak in the detail. This course has many great topics that would lend themselves to these SLOs that were not described in the course. ENGL 128-Online- The course was tabled for corrections. In GE SLO 1 Assignment with oral communication should be more specific, how the speaking will be accomplished is not shown. Can wording should be required; be specific and show how. The discussion board does not speak to the oral requirement. The remainder of our agenda will be tabled until our next meeting on September 10th. Scott asked permission to record the meetings in order to get all the details. The committee agreed. *Pa 6 = > ? @ i k # % P ໮sfffYfffLh'h&CJOJQJh'h SCJOJQJh'h^CJOJQJh&h&CJOJQJh'CJOJQJh&h^CJOJQJh&hHCJOJQJhctCJOJQJh^h^CJOJQJh^hHCJOJQJhFhFCJOJQJhH5CJOJQJhHCJOJQJhFCJOJQJ hHCJ hH0CJOP @ j $ J gd'gdd^gdd & F gd' & Fgd'8`8gd' & Fgddp^pgdH$a$gdH F H I J K } µ}sesW}MCMMhCJOJQJh SCJOJQJh&h&6CJOJQJh&h&CJH*OJQJh&CJOJQJh'CJOJQJh&hdCJOJQJhdCJOJQJhHCJOJQJh&h&CJOJQJh&h^CJOJQJh&hFCJOJQJh&hHCJOJQJh'hdCJOJQJhFCJOJQJh'hHCJOJQJJ K > @l\ }E 01qc & F gdK^gdJgdJ & FgdJgdJ & Fgdh8`8gd' & F gdd & Fgd'gd' < = > ?
