Agenda approved with the deletion of item 6 – TLP rubric for assessing program level SLOs. 2. Minutes of March 8 approved. 3. Campus Change Network plans for 2007 – 2008 Newin, Frances and Erlinda attended the meeting to discuss possibilities for dovetailing Campus Change Network efforts to promote professional development around issues of diversity and equity with initiatives of the GE Committee that focus professional development on particular student learning outcomes for GE. In the last three years, those efforts have been focused on helping students think critically and creatively. The GE Committee would like to build on that foundation whatever outcome is selected as an assessment and professional development focus for the next 2-3 years. In order to dovetail with CCN initiatives, we talked about whether or not it would make sense to begin to focus on the GE outcome that states: Students will possess a worldview informed by diverse social, multicultural and global perspectives. Members of the GE committee explained that whatever outcome we select, our efforts are focused on directly assessing student learning and using the results of those assessments to improve learning. We asked if this was congruent with the goals of the Campus Change Network; Newin said he could send out a rough draft of those goals, but they weren’t finalized yet. Initial discussion for the CCN group seemed to focus more on institutional climate and culture. While supportive of the professional development efforts of the Campus Change Network, the GE Committee decided that the next outcome we will focus on teaching and assessing will be: Student will read critically and communicate effectively as a writer and speaker. We thought we could encourage critical thinking and reading about subjects that deal with diversity and equity, and perhaps lay a foundation for assessing students’ ability to articulate a worldview based on these perspectives in a few years – after faculty and staff had benefited from the professional development provided by CCN. This decision was based on a fundamental distinction between effectively teaching students from diverse backgrounds – an important focus of Campus Change Network- and teaching all students in our GE program how to consider issues from multiple perspectives. These are, of course, not mutually exclusive and we would hope that one would reinforce the other; however, neither did it seem imperative that the two go forward on the same timeline. Given the difficulty we have had in the last three years designing assessments that gave us useful information on our students’ ability to think critically and creatively, we thought it advisable to move to an outcome that we are more certain of how to assess – reading, writing and speaking. We do not feel confident just yet in designing assessments that take on the more challenging task of designing cross-curricular assessments to determine our students’ ability to take on multiple social and cultural perspectives. 4. Professional Development/ Plans for Fall Flex Nancy announced that the 8 faculty who are attending the Leadership Institute in Reading Apprenticeship will put on a flex workshop to introduce interested faculty to this reading across the curriculum initiative. Richard suggested a workshop, perhaps in the evening, to orient faculty to the GE Student Learning Outcomes. Cindy will work with him on planning and facilitating the workshop, keeping Ken in the loop. Nancy speculated on the possibility of bringing Linda Elder of the Critical Thinking Foundation to campus in January flex to provide faculty more training on teaching students to read, speak and write in ways that reflect critical thinking. 5. Teaching Community: Online Teaching and Learning Nancy reported that Joanna Perry-Folino was interested in running a Teaching Community on Distance Education. The purpose would be to educate all faculty about on-line education- not just those who wanted to teach on-line. This would not be a “how to” seminar, but more of an overall look at online teaching, its strengths, weaknesses and possibilities. Not knowing where to bring this idea on campus, Nancy brought it to GE for direction. GE Committee members suggested that this might be something Academic Senate would support in order to foster a more informed vote about issues such as an online degree. Cindy also suggested that it could be a TLP project if it included assessment of student learning. Nancy will follow up on those suggestions with Joanna. 6. Deleted 7. GE Course Outlines – none 8. No update on accreditation and GE 9. No progress yet on information literacy returning to the Senate agenda )6 † Ф Ъ #-0§љїї6565)*+ŽПРС !ABqrЛ М ~ ›œЭЮЅІpqcњњњњјјјјјјјјјјјјђјђјјјјјјјјј„h^„h$a$)*+ŽПРС !ABqrЛ М ~ ›œЭЮЅІpqcd˜™•–ЁЂПРхц0(cd˜™•–ЁЂПРхц0§§§§§§§§§§§§ 1hАа/ Ар=!А"А# $ %А i<@ёџ< NormalCJ^J_HaJmH sH tH <A@ђџЁ< Default Paragraph Font0(џџџџ џџ z™ џџ z™r 0)0c0022џџLos Medanos CollegecMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:GE 2004-07:GE 2006-07:* MINUTES FOLDER FA06-SP07:GE minutes 07 April 12їe
