Minutes of Feb.9, 2006 approved. No GE courses to review. The committee reviewed a draft from the TLP proposing a specific charge and membership for the GE committee. Nancy explained that this draft was first discussed in the TLP several weeks ago, along with similar drafts for DE, Oc.Ed, Student Services and Library and Learning Support. It is an attempt to “institutionalize” assessment efforts and broaden the responsibility to include individuals who are closest to the outcomes being assessed. TLP is first asking for feedback from the committees themselves; then it will ask for a review/feedback for Senate and SGC. The GE committee approved the draft, and suggested that it be sent to Curriculum Committee as well for their review. We had a discussion on whether or not partially online GE courses should also be subject to GE committee review with regard to how they are providing opportunities for students to meet the speaking component. Cindy raised concerns about submitting instructors in online courses to a higher level of scrutiny than instructors in face to face sections. In the end we reached consensus on the following: We recommend that the online supplement form ask the following question: If you are teaching a partially online section: How many hours will your class meet face to face during the semester? In which part of the course will you meet the GE criteria for effective communication through speaking? ______ face to face hours ______ on-line hours ______ both face to face and on-line hours Honors and Assessment Update Cindy reported that the assessement subgroup of the Honors Committee will be meeting again to work on finalizing the program goals and student outcomes – these are not all student learning outcomes.Then they will work on a questionnaire that asks faculty to state what makes their honors course different from non-honors sections of the same course. Once this is done, they will develop student learning outcomes for specific courses that will specify what students should know and be able to do if they complete an honors section of the course. This work may prepare the Honors Program to participate in a pilot assessment project next year. Teaching Communities Nancy very briefly reported on the effort to write a handbook for teachers of ethnic/multicultural studies courses in response to assessment results from that teaching community. Ed Bolds and Judy Bank are contacting faculty to see if they have curricular materials for teaching students to think critically in those courses, overall or specifically in relation to the instructional unit on race that the assessment has focused on. If no such curricular materials exist, we will then ask if individuals are willing to work on some curricular development. Remaining agenda items were tabled as were out of time.
