Approved minutes of Dec. 14, 2006. GE Course Outlines and Addendum Common Advisories – Richard reported that a good number of departments responded to the form he sent out last semester asking them to list English advisories for GE courses. When the new catalog comes out for 2007- 2008, he will once again send out the same request for any GE courses that do not list an English advisory. Gil reported that the new cover page for COORs has been posted on the Curriculum Committee website. Cindy has not yet posted the evaluation form that the GE Committee uses when considering newly proposed GE courses, but she will try to do so by our next meeting. We did not receive an updated COOR for Music 10 from Kyle Chuah, so Gil will inform Kyle and the department chair that the course cannot be offered on line beginning Fall 07; the updated COOR will need to be approved by the GE Committee at its April 12 meeting at the latest, if it is to be forwarded to Curriculum Committee in May. The new COOR would need to be approved by Curriculum Committee in May in order to meet the deadline to schedule it as an online course in Spring 08. TLP and Learning Communities report- Nancy reported that the Social Science department is expanding their critical thinking assessment this semester to include their part time faculty; Dave reported that the subject of the public policy argument this semester would be Iraq. The Creative Arts and Humanities Teaching Community has added some new members from the Drama Dept. and will work this semester on revising assignments to include the elements of thinking in the Critical Thinking Model presented by Gerald Nosich in flex. Nancy observed that at least two department chairs see the teaching community as a professional development opportunity for adjunct faculty; we may want to consider pitching this more proactively at department chair meetings. Myra continues to lead a teaching community in the Biology department where the focus is an end of semester project in Bio 5. The TLP will also be reviewing the SLO portion of the program review and planning documents written by departments last semester. They will be looking for patterns, need for professional development assistance, and budgetary considerations. 5. GE Coordinator for 2007-2008 Congratulations and thank you to Ken and Cindy! Ken will become the GE Coordinator in January 2008 when his term as Curriculum Committee Chair is over. Cindy will be the interim coordinator for Fall 2007. This will be a .25 reassigned position with responsibility for coordinating assessment and professional development in general education. 6. Professional Development Anecdotal feedback has been positive for the flex presentations by Dr. Gerald Nosich of the Critical Thinking Foundation. Gil has followed up with ordering additional booklets, posters, and books to be distributed to faculty. When the materials arrive, hopefully by the end of February, Cindy and Nancy will work together to compose a letter and email that asks faculty to provide written feedback on how the flex presentations impacted their teaching and how they might use the materials provided. In addition, a Monday College Assembly has been requested to showcase the work of faculty who participated in the developmental education, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Seminar. Nancy thought we could also fold into this presentation the work of GE faculty on critical and creative thinking. Cindy raised the question of whether or not we are ready to recommend moving on to another GE criterion. After some discussion, we settled on the notion of building on our work in critical and creative thinking by focusing on how students demonstrate that thinking when reading, writing and speaking. Dave will research possible contacts/presenters on the speaking component, Cindy will do the same for writing, and Nancy will investigate hooking up with the reading apprenticeship movement. The goal is to present flex presentations in August and January that focus on critical/creative thinking when reading, writing and speaking. 7. Education Credit for instructional design- Nancy reviewed the origin of this idea which started in a brainstorming session for the Title 5 Coop Grant that Ruth Goodin is presently writing. It is part of a vision of a Teaching and Learning Center at агАЩДЋУН that provides a real structure for professional development efforts, inclusive of the efforts of the TLP groups. Nancy’s idea is that upper division/graduate courses could be offered for advancement on the salary schedule on a number of topics: instructional design, online teaching, culturally responsive teaching, etc. Since this idea is bigger than GE, Nancy will bring it as an agenda item to the Teaching and Learning Project next meeting on February 20th. 5^`d§ћH*5$56rst…ЈШЪ q ї ј kl^_€ийкі§јјјіјјёёёыцццціёііііііііі & F„h^„h & F$a$$56rst… А"А# $ %А i<@ёџ< NormalCJ^J_HaJmH sH tH <A@ђџЁ< Default Paragraph Font(>`ђ(Title$a$5d "џџџџ џџ z™ џџ z™_ d d іdd№8№@ёџџџ€€€ї№’№№0№( № №№B №S №ПЫџ ?№6;ffџџLos Medanos CollegelMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:GE 2004-07:GE 2006-07:* MINUTES FOLDER FA06-SP07:GeneralEducationCommitteeMinuteKу\Нк&џџџџџџџџџ btО9™џџџџџџџџџ„а„˜ўЦа^„а`„˜ўo(.€ „ „˜ўЦ ^„ `„˜ў‡hˆH.‚ „p„LџЦp^„p`„Lџ‡hˆH.€ „@ „˜ўЦ@ ^„@ `„˜ў‡hˆH.€ „„˜ўЦ^„`„˜ў‡hˆH.‚ „р„LџЦр^„р`„Lџ‡hˆH.€ „А„˜ўЦА^„А`„˜ў‡hˆH.€ „€„˜ўЦ€^„€`„˜ў‡hˆH.‚ „P„LџЦP^„P`„Lџ‡hˆH.h„8„˜ўЦ8^„8`„˜ўOJQJo(‡hˆHЗ№h„„˜ўЦ^„`„˜ўOJQJ^Jo(‡hˆHoh„и „˜ўЦи ^„и `„˜ўOJQJo(‡hˆHЇ№h„Ј „˜ўЦЈ ^„Ј `„˜ўOJQJo(‡hˆHЗ№h„x„˜ўЦx^„x`„˜ўOJQJ^Jo(‡hˆHoh„H„˜ўЦH^„H`„˜ўOJQJo(‡hˆHЇ№h„„˜ўЦ^„`„˜ўOJQJo(‡hˆHЗ№h„ш„˜ўЦш^„ш`„˜ўOJQJ^Jo(‡hˆHoh„И„˜ўЦИ^„И`„˜ўOJQJo(‡hˆHЇ№Kу btџџџџџџџџџџџџ џ@€cc[ccЅd @GTimes New Roman5€Symbol3 Arial? Courier New;€Wingdings"qŒ№аhDВ†FЃВFPЮ§"х€#$№ЅРДД~0Ђe[2ƒQ№HXџџGeneral Education CommitteeInformation TechnologyLos Medanos Collegeўџ р…ŸђљOhЋ‘+'Гй0˜˜МШшє ,8 T ` lx€ˆ'General Education CommitteeeneInformation TechnologytnfonfoNormaltагАЩДЋУН8s Microsoft Word 9.0@р- @žœ№нKЧ@Ќь2UЧЮ§ўџ еЭеœ.“—+,љЎ0 hpŒ”œЄ ЌДМФ Ь є'агАЩДЋУН"ЂЯ General Education Committee Title ўџџџўџџџ ! Document.8
