Minutes of Nov. 2, 2006 approved. Critical Thinking Flex Program Gerald Nosichs workshop planned for January 11 filled at the default setting of 30 slots, so Gil increased the maximum to accommodate 50 participants. We will continue to advertise the workshop via email and letters, specifically inviting GE faculty who have not yet signed up. Gil and Nancy summarized the telephone conference they held with Gerald (and Myra) to plan for the content of his presentations on both Thursday, Jan.11 and Friday, Jan. 12. Although Gerald has a packaged presentation that he usually does to introduce faculty to basic concepts in teaching and assessing critical thinking, he was very open to modifying that package to accommodate our needs. He has been informed of the work we have been doing in our GE Teaching Communities, and has looked at the work we have documented in our Blackboard classrooms and websites. Gerald will use the morning of the 11th to present basic elements of a critical thinking model, then address writing assignments that elicit critical thinking in the afternoon. He also requested that we extend the afternoon session by one hour so that he could address affective issues related to critical thinking, and we agreed to do so. On Friday morning, he understands that he will be addressing the entire college community with the purpose of both informing and inspiring everyone to think about the importance of critical thinking in our curriculum. On Friday afternoon, Gerald will meet with a smaller subgroup of interested faculty and managers who want to promote next steps in professional development on this topic. Cindy suggested that we try to recruit faculty who attend the Thursday workshop to attend this follow up meeting, especially if they express interest in perhaps leading future professional development efforts in critical thinking. Common Advisories for GE courses Richard estimated that about 2/3 of the departments that had been sent a request that they state an English advisory for their courses had done so. Gil reported that the official COOR form had been modified to indicate that a department was requesting GE status for the course; Gil will follow up with Eileen to make sure the new cover page is posted on the Curriculum Committee website. GE Course Outline Evaluation Form: We approved the modified version of this form that Cindy designed to include updated information on SLOs and assessment. Cindy will follow up with Ken and Christine to make sure this is also available on the Curriculum Committee website. Music 10 COOR The Music 10 COOR was not approved by the committee. We decided to send it back to Kyle to make some edits to CSLOs 1-3, and to continue to work on CSLOs 4 and 4. Ken will meet with Kyle to help him with this from a disciplinary perspective. We agreed to meet in a special session in January in order to hopefully approve this course in time to forward it to Curriculum Committee by the end of January, allowing scheduling to go forward for Fall 2007. (The course must be updated for it to be offered in an online format for Fall 07.) Ongoing Professional Development for faculty teaching GE courses We brainstormed a number of possibilities for systematic and on-going professional development in GE. Cindy advocated for workshops in every flex period that address the GE criteria, with follow up during the semester. Nancy would like to see courses offered with education credit attached in instructional design and the writing of course outlines. We all agreed that we need a plan and will work on this in Spring 07. Meeting Times for Spring 07 We will meet the 2nd Thursday of each month from 2-3:30 p.m. 63 5 h8H*h8 h85$67ghiz{ z{^h^h^ & F$a$ & F^,1h/ =!"#$% @@@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DAD Default Paragraph FontVi@V Table Normal :V 44 la (k@(No List DC@D Body Text Indent ^ $67ghiz{ z { 0000000 00 00 00000000 000000000 00000 0000 000$67ghiz{ 0000000 00 00 0h0h0h0h0h0 ^t h^Lgg^ f^i^6f^Tiaa## ff'' 8*urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttagsCity9*urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttagsplace pnrV Z 33a[$R ^`o(. ^`hH. pLp^p`LhH. @ @ ^@ `hH. ^`hH.
