Approved minutes of Oct. 12, 2006. Music 10 Course Outline We reviewed the course outline Kyle Chuah submitted for GE approval and decided to return it to him as it did not address GE outcomes. Nancy will contact Kyle to schedule another meeting to consult on this COOR. Memo Requesting English Advisories for GE courses Richard sent out a memo to department chairs that had GE courses that lacked an English advisory, requesting that they indicate an advisory of English 90 or 100. A description of the level of reading and writing abilities for each of those courses was provided, as well as a “filled-out” form needing only an indication of level and a signature for processing. He reported that, to date, only two forms had been returned. On a related note, Gil reported that the official COOR form had been modified to indicate that a course meets GE requirements. Information Competency Requirement Cindy reported that at a recent session of the statewide Academic Senate an advisory resolution was passed supporting an information competency requirement for community college students seeking an AA or AS Degree. агАЩДЋУН Senate President Erich Holtmann put this on a recent senate agenda as an information item and asked the senators whether they would like to consider an action item in the future supporting the state senate’s resolution and adding an information competency to the агАЩДЋУН graduation requirements.. They said no. TLP Update Nancy provided a brief update on the status of our general education teaching communities. We have made no progress in writing a handbook for teachers of materials for helping students think critically in these courses. The Creative Arts and Humanities Teaching Communities continues to assess student work on template assignments that require students to generate innovative solutions to ethical, social or cultural problems. This group has made several observations about the challenges of helping students do this. Social Science faculty plan to extend their assessment of students’ ability to formulate policy arguments by asking part time-faculty to give this assignment in their courses in Spring 2007. Flex Workshop on Critical Thinking with consultant Gerald Nosich. Cindy, Gil, Myra and Nancy are the appointed subgroup to work with Gerald Nosich prior to his flex workshop on Jan. 11 and keynote speech to the entire college on Jan 12. They will inform him about our efforts thus far to teach and assess critical thinking skills, and work with him on the organization of those flex days. Job Description for GE Chair Myra, Nancy and Richard will work on getting out a job description and announcement of .25 reassigned time for a GE chair beginning Fall 2007. December meeting Although we did not originally include a December meeting on the calendar as our usual meeting time is during finals week, we decided that we needed to meet anyway.
