Todays agenda was approved with item #10 carried over to the next agenda. Minutes of February 11, 2010 were approved. Cindy outlined the draft of the plan for the Monday March 1 Seminar. First half-hour give an overview of where we are in the 11 year planning cycle, specifically on the Reading, Writing, and Speaking work. Give outcomes and where we are going. Judy can present feedback from the Fall activities and groups. Handouts can be given out from those activities to refresh what was done. Activities for the next hour may include box groups coming up with Reading Assessments they could all use. Ideas that all disciplines could use, strategies and tools. This is not mandatory but encouraged. Shape the teaching strategies for students to be successful in your discipline with material unique to your course. Also share common assessments. What new strategies will they employ? Note: It will be hard to get data for the RWS since to date it is self reflective. Eventually measureable data will come though. The College wide assessment of CSLOs is in progress and some disciplines may be able to get 2 for 1 assessment outcomes so work is not doubled. Consensus is this is a good plan. Cindy will work on handouts. Ask for feedback and have materials ready to go on Monday. Refreshments will also be served. Cindy will e-mail college faculty information about Designing Writing Assignments: From Objectives to Assessment presented by Ann Johns on March 4th. This is a workshop that is interdisciplinary. Please promote it to your colleagues. Cindy will also announce it at the seminar on Monday. The Ethnic Studies/Ethical Inquiry discussion/action item was tabled to the next agenda. The survey monkey went out and 18 responses have come back to date. Results will be discussed at a future meeting to incorporate into the next seminar planning. Of the 18 responses received the Global Diversity was indicated as the least important. The new form is Stage I of II. More updates to come. Group likes it so far. GE course reviews: HIST 037- Passed with suggestions to clarify more in speaking. HIST 038-Not passed. Needs the author to have more explicit critical thinking assignments and beef up the A and C level work. Analyze and synthesize verbs used in assignments clearly stated. Possibility of a position paper rather than a research paper. Dont want student only restating information. Liana will make some suggestions for assignments and forward them to Janice to work with author on suggested corrections. SPCH 038 Not passed. Suggestions include using interviews as assignments to be sure culture is not stereotyped. Another suggestion would be to have individuals present on their own culture. Feedback will be given to author by Shiela Rodolfo.
