GE Course Outlines and Addendums There were no new course outlines to be reviewed. We discussed the role of the GE committee in deciding if GE courses to be offered on-line met the speaking criteria of the GE course outlines of record. The Curriculum Committee has requested that the GE and on-line subcommittees work together to make recommendations about how on-line courses can meet these criteria. After much discussion, we decided that the original criteria should remain unchanged: “Courses should provide regular opportunities for students to explore ideas and communicate orally. Students should demonstrate the ability to speak effectively both in small groups and whole class presentations.” We agreed that on-line formats such as the discussion board provided regular opportunities for students to explore ideas and communicate, albeit not orally. The second statement, however, would need to be met in one way or another, by having students actually speak in small groups and whole class presentations. One option would be for instructors to design authentic speaking assignments to off-campus groups, such as the assignment designed by Murph Kinney for History 37LS. The second option would require the expertise of the on-line committee and might involve students filming themselves speaking via Webcams and sending that video to small groups or the entire class. Here our imagination was limited by our lack of technological knowledge, but we trust that creative solutions exist and are multiplying rapidly. This we leave to the expertise of the on-line subcommittee. Report on Teaching and Learning Project meeting on September 14 Nancy, Myra, Don and Cindy all reported on the initial meeting of the Teaching and Learning Project. Nancy summarized the focus of the meeting, which was to introduce a wider segment of the college community to the “infrastructure” we have designed for our assessment efforts, and to get them started in planning for assessment in preparation for our next accreditation cycle. Don talked a bit about his efforts to educate the Social Science department about assessment, and the possibility of them stepping forward to be Pilot C in the Spring 2005 semester. Myra reported that one of the big questions that will need to be addressed is “ What is a program?” Update on Critical Thinking Teaching Communities Myra and Nancy updated the committee on the progress of Pilots A and B. Pilot A, Ethnic and Multicultural Studies, is in its third semester. All full time faculty, and many part time faculty, will be showing the video “ Race: The Power of Allusion” in their classes this semester and having their students write in class responses to our assessment questions. Instructors will make a copy of those student responses, and forward the ungraded copy to the Assessment group, facilitated by Judy Bank. These will be holistically scored in our January flex session. At that time, we will also decide if we want the resulting data “cut” by the Office of Institutional Research in particular ways. Pilot A participants are meeting on Monday, October 18 to “check-in” on how they are doing with implementing both the learning experience and the assessment. Pilot B, Creative Arts/Humanities will hold its first meeting on Thursday, Sept.23. Participants include: Judy Bank, Joanna Folino, Cindy McGrath, Kyle Chuah, Ia Carbonell and possibly, Curtis Corlew. Myra and Nancy will facilitate. GE Historical Documents Kudos to Cindy for assembling binders for everyone that contain archival material on general education at Los Medanos since the 1970’s. It wonderful to have it all in one place for easy access. The committee members were duly impressed! Richard also distributed a document produced by the 1998 Task Force on GE and Requirements entitled “Requirements Outcomes”. Cindy pointed out that the only thing actually voted on in the Academic Senate, however, was the 5 GE criteria. Transforming Current GE Criteria into Program Level Student Learning Outcomes We reviewed a first draft that Cindy and Don wrote at the end of last semester, attempting to write the current criteria as SLO’s for the GE program. We agreed that we would send additional suggestions to Cindy for review at our next meeting. Terminology We agreed to the following terms: Program Level Student Learning Outcomes e.g. Students will think critically and creatively.
