Todays agenda approved. Minutes of October 8, 2009 were approved. G.E. Seminar Discussion: The discussion in the different G.E. box groups was fascinating. In addition to discussing assumptions, we should have discussed strategies for applying what we learned about into better student learning. The mood of this seminar was better because the faculty were able to talk instead of listening to a panel. We could mix different G.E. areas up in groups at future seminars, but it might be more useful to keep faculty grouped by G.E. box, the faculty might get more useful results. Results of Ethical Inquiry Discussion: There are four necessary components of ethical inquiry courses. Ethical inquiry components are separate from G.E. SLOs, an ethical inquiry course can be G.E. or not. Ethical inquiry courses should still have some research requirement, just not so big. Robbie Kunkle will update the COOR for Kates old HUMAN 003 class. An ethical inquiry course needs to teach moral systems. There should be an ethical inquiry committee to look at ethical inquiry COORs. There is a certain amount of G.E. SLO language in the ethical inquiry components. #2 is like the ethnic/multicultural studies Ӱɴý AA box. #2 means to say that ethics are affected by cultural differences, not that the course has to teach cultural diversity. All ethical inquiry courses have ENGL 100 as a prerequisite. New ethical inquiry course would need a prerequisite study. CA has rubric about courses that go into the CSU Critical Thinking box (AREA A). We should move PHIL 002 from Ӱɴý AA Creative Arts/Humanities box to Communication/Critical Thinking box. Global and World Perspectives Discussion: Diversity also means varying perspectives on knowledge, varying points of view. There are all types of diversity- Global means the diversity must extend beyond the diversity of the U.S. G.E. committee passes COOR that do not explicitly refer to global perspectives, as long as the author makes a good faith effort to address the spirit of G.E. SLO 5. In SP10 overlap assessment of the reading, writing, speaking with introduction of global perspectives. Have 3 total meetings in SP10 with a survey to cover assessment for RWS and introduction of global perspectives. (Richard will look for 3 Monday dates) Suggestion to give the reports from previous seminar(s) to the faculty for assessment. Ask in the survey for global what this criterion means to them and what strategies faculty might use to achieve it in their course(s). This committee should be careful when addressing other groups perspectives (i.e.IDEA) to be sure it is not a different focus than the G.E. goal. Good of the Order Cindy agreed to chair for 1 year only starting Spring 2010. Judy will assist her to the best of her ability. We need more G.E. faculty on the committee. Richard will actively recruit a permanent chair for Fall 2010. This committee should continue to look for additional faculty in other disciplines to round out the committee in all boxes.
