Agenda approved 2. Minutes of Nov. 8 meeting approved 3. GE Course Outlines and Addendum n№ ENV SCI 10, 15 and 20: The courses had been approved in principle at the last meeting with the understanding that they be tweaked according revisions suggested by the committee and in collaboration with Nancy. Nancy reported that she worked successfully with the course author to make the revisions, and that one of the courses is now a model on the Curriculum Committee website. 4. 11-year GE SLO Professional Development Plan n№ Report on GE forum: About a dozen people showed up to the forum which Cindy opened by summarizing the genesis of the 11-Year Professional Development Plan and explained the mandatory GE seminars starting in the spring. A psychology of fear surfaced on the part of some who wondered exactly what kind of evidence the GE Committee was looking for and how it was going to be used. There was real concern that it might impact people’s evaluations and jobs. All GE Committee members in attendance did their best to dispel those concerns and reiterated that it is about self-reflection to improve teaching and learning. Mark Lewis suggested that in the future the GE Committee do a better job of being inclusive in the development and implementation of initiatives that impact everyone. His comments sparked an idea after the meeting of scheduling faculty-wide forums about each of the remaining four GE SLOs in the upcoming SLO cycles. n№ Update on planning for Spring GE seminars: Nancy, Cindy and Ken met to talk about logistics regarding the upcoming seminars. Nancy reported that the worksheet for the first GE seminar on Feb. 4 has been revised. Nancy commented that members of accreditation teams want to see colleges close the loop with regard to assessment. In terms of the GE seminars, closing the loop means that each facilitator with collect and compile class assessment results from individual faculty and report out to the GE Committee. The GE Committee will analyze the results across all seminar groups, make recommendations with regard to those results, and report out to the TLP. Ken reported a change in plans regarding facilitation of the seminars. Plan A had GE Committee members running the first half of the first session to pull things together and allow for the selection of facilitators by the group. This seemed cumbersome and a waste of precious seminar time. Plan B calls for advance recruitment and training of facilitators who would run the meetings from the beginning. We decided to support plan B. As incoming GE Chair, Ken will put out a call for facilitators. 5. Reading, Writing and Speaking SLO n№ January Flex update: Gil reported that, to date, 27 are signed up for day 1 and 19 for day 2 of the two-day Linda Elder workshop. He is working with the Critical Thinking Foundation to order workshop booklets, and handling Elder s accommodations. As TLP chair, Nancy authorized the purchase of 350 sets of booklets to be used at the workshop and distributed to all faculty. Extras will be saved and given to new hires. Gil, Cindy, Alex and Nancy participated in a conference call discussion with Linda Elder about the upcoming workshop, and reported that they clarified how her workshop will dovetail with our 11-Year-Plan. Nancy said she liked the way Elder said she will handle the speaking component — she distinguishes between public speaking as a communication of ideas and as a direct reflection of thinking. n№ Richard Paul workshop opportunity Feb. 29-March 2: Gil reported that he asked for and got a discount for a delegation of over 12 for the Teaching by Design workshop. We are hoping to attract between 12 and 20, and the TLP will pay for the conference registration, lunch and mileage, but not hotel since it is a local event in Berkeley. Cindy will inform faculty about the opportunity. n№ Professional development on speaking: Linda Elder will touch on this briefly, but we need to focus on the speaking criteria a bit more as faculty have indicated this is where they need help. Shiela Rodolfo, who teaches speech and agreed work up some ideas for us, was not able to be at the meeting today so we will take this up in the future. 6. Basic Skills Initiative: Nancy explained this is a statewide initiative to improve developmental education. The community colleges have been asked to benchmark practices, and there is money for research. The reason this might impact GE? She wonders if we should we do a research study on the performance of students in GE courses to try to find out whether students are ignoring advisories and taking GE courses unprepared. Dan will be submitting a plan to the state, and we may be having a college forum about it in the spring. 7. GE Philosophy: How do we begin updating the language that defines our program? We did not have much time to address this topic. Cindy handed out the Position Paper from the early 1980s that philosophically defined the program, asked folks to read it over winter break and be ready to discuss it in upcoming spring meetings. Ken said that, as incoming GE chair, is it his hope whatever we come up with in terms of a new document be concise and efficient. We determined that the back burner item on “GE beyond the integrated criteria” would stay on the back burner for a while longer. Then we adjourned about at 5 p.m. until spring. Spring meetings: second Thursdays, 3:30-5 p.m. on Feb. 14, March 13, April 10, May 8 5EДЦЧэяў ^ b d †dfln,&!7!Ѕ#Ж#љ#њ#§§§§і§іі§ііі§§№ъ 6OJQJ 5OJQJ CJOJQJ5 1245ВГДЧШюяќ ў ` b VW”•†‡ˆ§ћііієєєєєєєєєюєєєєюшюццєє„а`„а„а^„а$a$1245ВГДЧШюяќ ў ` b VW”•†‡ˆЎbdjl&! А"А# $ %А i<@ёџ< NormalCJ^J_HaJmH sH tH <A@ђџЁ< Default Paragraph Font.>@ђ.Title$a$ 5:CJ$.J@.Subtitle$a$6<C@<Body Text Indent „а`„а:'@Ђ!:Comment ReferenceCJaJ0@20 Comment TextCJ@R`B@Body Text Indent 2 „а^„а$4'џџџџ!џџ z™!џџ z™ џџ z™>qЩњ#ˆњ#њ#•ЛЛЛЛџџLos Medanos CollegeNMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:GE 2004-07:GE 2007-08:MINUTES:GE minutes 4 Dec. 13Los Medanos College<Macintosh HD:Temporary Items:AutoRecovery save of GE minutesLos Medanos CollegeNMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:GE 2004-07:GE 2007-08:MINUTES:GE minutes 4 Dec. 13Los Medanos CollegeNMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:GE 2004-07:GE 2007-08:MINUTES:GE minutes 4 Dec. 13Los Medanos CollegeNMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:GE 2004-07:GE 2007-08:MINUTES:GE minutes 4 Dec. 13Los Medanos College<Macintosh HD:Temporary Items:AutoRecovery save of GE minutesLos Medanos CollegeNMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:GE 2004-07:GE 2007-08:MINUTES:GE minutes 4 Dec. 13Los Medanos CollegeNMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:GE 2004-07:GE 2007-08:MINUTES:GE minutes 4 Dec. 13Los Medanos CollegeNMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:GE 2004-07:GE 2007-08:MINUTES:GE minutes 4 Dec. 13Los Medanos College2Macintosh HD:Temporary Items:Word Work File A_3750їe
