Minutes were taken by Margaret Hertstein. Public Comment and announcement. Add agenda item to discuss future of GE requirements in discussion in Academic Senate. Discussed also in item #8. See 8a. The agenda was approved with addition of item 8a- discussion of GE requirements future as is being reviewed and discussed in Academic Senate. The minutes from 5/13/11 were tabled. The FA11 GE meeting schedule had the following changes: Oct. 7th will replace Oct. 14th meeting. Nov. 4th and 18th will be the November meetings. The September 19th GE Seminar date is cancelled. There is a BRIC retreat that many of the GE group is a part of. Scott will check with Richard to verify dates for the other two planned for Oct. 17 and Nov. 14. No GE course outlines for review today. We need other box faculty representation for GE. Sharon Wellbrook was suggested Scott will talk to her. Alex will inquire in the ENGL department for a representative. A presenter will be needed at the GE Seminar. Ideas were discussed. Rosa, Alex and Liana will talk with their colleagues. Nick Garcia was also suggested to join GE Committee. Janice and Liana will bring it up to him. He may have too much on his plate this semester, but maybe he would do it anyway. Tawny Beal will join us. She will be part of GE SLO #2 Interdisciplinary category reviewer with Scott. General consensus is to keep the GE Seminar plan as decided in May. Even though there may be changes coming in GE in the future, it is best to keep with our plan of assessment of Ethical Implications. In Seminar 1 we planned to have a presenter. This is a bridge year for GE and assessment processes. The committee would like to make Potential Model for GE SLO Assessment a regular agenda item. Discussion included: A five page assignment to standardize the GE SLOs (except speaking) model. Two part course level assessment using a student survey and a faculty designed assessment. An example from American River College was handed out. There are many discussions going on in Academic Senate about the GE model. It is felt that a model someplace in the middle of the current 5 GE SLOs (integrated model all GE courses do all GE SLOs) and a revision to courses only having 3 of 6 GE SLOs could be where it lands. Departmental autonomy. These talks are on-going. We do not know what the end result will be. Alex was encouraged to attend Academic Senate meetings to present the GE view. GE would lose if the criteria are lowered. 8a. The committee might like to have the Academic Senate President talk to us about what is being discussed regarding GE. Cindy presented the history of Academic Senate from 96-98 years and how it came to be their task today to look at GE box criteria and SLOs. Academic Senate wanted this to be a standing agenda item that they spend time on. SB1440 is why it came up. Academic Senate has a representative group from the campus community. No time for item #9 today.
