Minutes were taken by Margaret Hertstein. Guest: Sharon Wellbrook Public Comment and announcement. None for today. The agenda was approved with re-arrangement to order to accommodate our guest for BIOSC-005. The minutes from 2/11/11 were approved without additions, deletions, or revisions. GE Course Outline Review-BIOSC-005. This course was approved as a GE course in all GE SLOs. It was agreed it would be placed into the BIOSC/PHYSC GE box. Review of GE Seminar. Discussion was good and in depth. The discussion leaders helped make the conversation work. Responses to the article were good, but is this a current reading? How would you apply the discussion here to the classroom? What was really going on in the article? Address why the article is being written. Remember discussion can be sensitive but deal with topic directly on some points. This was a starter session. It is hard to know where to start on this topic. Many disciplines where represented. If you direct the discussion too specifically you risk shutting down some responses and interaction. The purpose is to get people thinking about cultural relevant pedagogy. Diversity of the group is key, who is the audience? We should build community in GE in all courses; a community of reading; a community of vocabulary and share between the diverse backgrounds. The tone and atmosphere of the seminar was good. We are on the right path. Continue with how this would be taught in the classroom. Plan the seminars with more input from the whole GE committee. The committee will use the next GE meeting to plan the March 21st seminar as a group. How to analyze and respond to the FA10 Assessment Reports. The committee will review these before the next GE meeting and come back to go over the assessments together. 5-Year Assessment Plan. Cindy presented an updated version of her 5 year plan. We need to streamline and make things easy for faculty. In order to all be on the same cycle GE will need to decide if they want to compress SLO #4 and #5 into one year or only do SLO #4 for the entire year and eliminate #5. FA12 is the program comprehensive report. 2014 is the accreditation visit. We need to decide before the end of this semester. In general the opinion seemed to lean towards doing SLO #4 and eliminate #5. Forward youre input to Cindy. NOTE: The online supplements for DRAMA and ENGL that needed the speaking component have been updated by the author. Margaret will forward these to the committee to review so a vote can be given quickly at our next meeting on the 11th.
