Minutes were taken by Scott. Guest: Shaniquequa Williams (student), Danielle Liubicich Public Comment and announcement. Rosa announced that Mary Oleson would like Scott to contact her about connecting professional development related to various themes across different committees. The portal will eventually help with this. The committees might be GE, PDAC, and the Math Social Justice Reading Group. The agenda was approved without additions, deletions, or revisions The minutes from 10/8/10 were approved without additions, deletions, or revisions. GE Course Outline Review BIOSC 7: The COOR was originally returned because, Speaking is not clearly defined in the assessments. Danielle did a very good job of addressing speaking in her revision. The rubric was nice. Ethnical implications were addressed in a lab and elsewhere. The topics were taken advantage of to cover diverse perspectives. It was passed. MUSIC 12: speaking online was addressed in the term paper assignment. It was passed. HIST 29: speaking online was addressed by three alternative assignments. It was passed. HIST 30: speaking online was addressed. It was passed. Report on Student Success Conference Gil reported that it is one of the best conferences because it focuses on student learning outcomes, assessment, research and planning, and accreditation. There were ten strands and Gil attended the GE-related ones. Other colleges have SLOs above our ISLOs called core competencies and some colleges have only GE as their ISLOs. Next year the conference will be in San Francisco, so hopefully more faculty will go. Discussion of article White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack The rest of the meeting was taken up by a discussion of the article. Comments were that it was very to the point on discrimination issues. It allows students to re-evaluate their worldview. Students of color work twice as hard to make instructors feel comfortable, which is stressful for them. Instructors need to let go of some of their privilege. We need to learn other peoples perspective with regard to racism and other issues. One person thought it was not an instructors responsibility to make students feel comfortable. In one class, students make their own lists of privileges they have and dont have. It is fascinating that a white person wrote about her own privilege. Good to start race discussion by saying that there is racism between groups and within groups, it is complicated. There is natural tendency to think that people of color are always speaking for their entire group. Its interesting that the media say, black person, but for a white person they just say, person. There is a lot in the article about ethnocentrism. There are privileges due to skin color, economic level, and other ways. Its hard not to feel guilty over the privileges we have, and we need to view those privileges as blessings that allow us to help others. One person thought that it is possible that some students are not ready for college. On the other hand, it may be that no one saw those students potential and told them what they are capable of. Faculty need to create friendships with those students. Sometimes students whom you do not think will succeed can surprise you. Some students receive only bad images of themselves in the media and those students are hypnotized into believing those images and into how to get along in the culture. They need someone to believe in them. Racism is embedded in our social system, it is not just individual acts of meanness. Are there ways we can change our college system to help students of color? It helps when students learn from each other. People first need to acknowledge the white advantage. We need to eliminate the feeling of students of color that they are fighting against the world. Faculty need to put themselves in their students situation. 7. Discussion of how we want to use the article and previous discussion notes to help faculty. There were a number of ideas put forward. We could have the faculty read the article. A college opening day could have a speaker to address the impact of race in a global way. We can ask people what is missing from the article. You need to build trust within a community of learners. Periodic seminars are not the best structures. Need graduate seminar-type structure where people commit to regular meetings in order to get deeply into these issues. For faculty to understand what it feels like to be the other, they could take an African American studies class where they are made to feel uncomfortable. Its difficult for faculty to take themselves out of their feeling of privilege. We have a lot of options. We could put a survey out to faculty about how we want to delve into this topic. As them if should bring in guest speakers. Rosa and Janice will brainstorm a possible survey. 8. Debrief about GE Seminar 2. Everyone was able to look at all the photocopied evaluations from the seminar. 9. GE Seminar 3 planning. We did not get to this. The meeting adjourned at 3:35pm.
