All GE categories pass.GE Seminar planning for 4-23-12Alex proposed a two-part agenda. The first 30 minutes would be a sharing in small groups about our ethics work followed by small and whole group discussions about an example of student writing from a PHIL 2 class. Alex will remove any of his comments and the students name from the writing sample. The rest of the seminar will be a whole group discussion about the AA units vote. Faculty will be able to vent and discuss where the GE program goes from here. Alex will invite Clint and Akilah to attend the seminar in order to answer questions. Planning for GE Retreat in AugustAlex will schedule the August GE Retreat during the extra variable flex day on the Monday of flex week. Some possible agenda items: Small group discussion to share a wonderful book or article. This will build community and let faculty find out who has interests that are similar to their own, and it will be fun. Discuss building program coherence. We will try to elicit how different classes can connect to each other by teaching the same theme. Present and discuss research that shows that students benefit from classes that interconnect. Alex will try to assemble a bibliography and quotes about this research. We could put faculty into random teams for a fun trivia game that would show how different disciplines interconnect. If Alex and Jennifer Saito attend the Stanford human rights conference, they could lead a discussion about how human rights could be taught across the GE curriculum as a theme. Every GE class could teach the theme in the same month. The afternoon could be Jennifer telling everyone, What Ive learned about GE instruction from directing honors. We also discussed ending the retreat with a free write about what they thought of the day and what they will take away from it.
