Approve agenda and minutes: Agenda: Approved with the following changes: Discussion of Spanish 51S should we review the COOR after Laurie Huffmans online presentation to the committee? Should we expand the presentation to one half hour? The suggestion was made that perhaps we might have a retreat the do a more in-depth and hands-on exploration of the oral component of foreign language online courses. Clarification: A separate COOR for online course was NOT previously proposed, but existing course outlines should be revised to reflect online delivery of the course. Integrate new COOR into old for completely online courses? Should the online committee be revisited as far its charge and committee membership, etc? (M/S; Ybarra/Snell) Unanimous Minutes from 9/7/05: Approved with the following changes: Add Laurie Huffmans name to the members present at the meeting. Change bullet 3 on Page 2 under FOREIGN LANGUAGE/ESL to read as follows: Should the online subcommittee consider whether or not a proposed online course allows the student to meet the CSLOs in addition to considering student contact? (M/S; Smith/Snell) Unanimous Consent Agenda: Both items on the consent agenda were approved with the following changes: COMSC 53 Advanced Microsoft Visual Basic.net Change to Credit Degree Applicable. Change to be effective Catalog 06/07 ENGLISH Change numbers of department oourses with the following change: ENGLISH 98/99 are already used for COOP Ed and Independent Study (consistent in all departments). Therefore, these numbers cant be changed. Changes will be made and reviewed by the Office of Instruction. Rationale: The English Department is renumbering its courses to reflect a more logical sequence which may serve as a model for college-wide course re-numbering in the future. Discussion of CHDEV Correspondence Courses This was discussed at the Academic Senate without specific outcome except to defer to Curriculum Committee review online vs. distance education model. Discussion: Do we want to reach out to potential students who cant make it to the college? Do we want to embrace the long distance model? Should we rename the Online Committee to the Distance Education Committee? Does this environment address particular outcomes in this course? Is the mode of instruction appropriate for the outcomes? Do we need to develop a policy regarding hrs/model of instruction/lecture/lab/composition/activity? Where do we include correspondence? Should we check other colleges who offer online courses to see how they handle this? There was a proposal to get a small group together to formalize these issues . These courses are still 900s through Spring 06. We need a short term answer by November 1. Key issues in the handbook should include: Relationship between units and lab hours Mode of instruction box Students should be able to correspond with each other How should the present form and handbook be changed? How is the mode being correlated with the regular COOR form? A group will meet which will include Laurie, Janice and Myra in consultation with Richard to come up with a short term solution for the November deadline. They will bring back a prototype to the committee with a COOR with an online form attached. They will research who else is doing these courses and what are their regulations. Discussion on Advanced Placement Exams and Credit at Ӱɴý General Ӱɴý College information regarding these exams was given to the committee. Ӱɴý needs to update how we give credit for these exams who decides what course exams are equal to? Recommend that we look at the policy again. This is a complex and important college wide discussion which should go to Academic Senate. Particular issue is that the present list is so small are we losing students who go to a college who gives credit with a score of 3? At this time there are 30 AP Exams published. Should Curriculum Committee pursue this and recommend it to Academic Senate for a presentation to departments and then include information in the catalog? Should faculty follow UCs guidelines? Ken will write a memo to present at the next meeting for a motion to endorse AP Exams/Credit to Academic Senate. Memo will include some proposed timelines, appropriate reading with back up links for response, and an explanation of scoring system: 3, 4, 5 are passing scores, but what do they equal in credit and equivalency? Update from Shared Governance Council No SGC update for this meeting. Articulation Update No articulation update for this meeting. Determine Agenda for Wednesday, October 19, 2005 Meeting Memo to Academic Senate about AP Exams and Credit at Ӱɴý Laurie will present a lesson demonstration that illustrates an Ӱɴý students oral/aural experience in an online language environment. (30 minutes) Discussion of new COOR form for completely online courses (after online course demonstration) Recommendation to rename the Online Committee to Distance Education Committee and recommend to the Academic Senate.
