Guests: Richard Livingston, Dennis Gravert; Don Kaiper Announcements & Public Comment Richard thanked Janice for her service and hard work at Ӱɴý as Curriculum Chair for four years! This was not always an easy task and her work is appreciated. Janice thanked everyone for their assistance and gave special thanks to Eileen and Margaret for being part of her team. Janice had a list of items for Laurie, incoming Curriculum Chair, that grew as the meeting went on. Kiran announced that she has been asked to present her Vision 20/20 work at The Strengthening Student Success Conference We Are One! (Or Am I Just Crazy?) to be held October 3-5. Dennis Gravert will be joining the Curriculum Committee for FA12. Janice will forward his name to Academic Senate. Approval of todays Agenda- The agenda was approved. (M/S;Norris.Gunder) Unanimous Minutes from May 2, 2012 Approved. (M/S;Goff.Gunder) Unanimous. Consent Agenda Motion to pull all three items to discuss individually. (M/S;Norris.Goff) Unanimous FIRE- 120 Not approved with suggestion to use instructor who meets both disciplines of FIRE and EMS for this academy and look into other solutions for future. Suggested to re-write the curriculum to include a short course in EMS as part of academy or check the State disciplines list to see if EMS could be added.(M/S;Norris.Goff) Unanimous. HIST-033- Don Kaiper came and answered questions regarding this request. This is a very specific history course, not a broad integrated survey type of course. There are also many other choices in history for the degree requirements. This request to remove HIST-033 from the GE box requirements was approved. (M/S;Norris.Gunder) Unanimous. SPAN-060 Approved with the addition of a sentence in rationale to state the WEB CAPE Placement Score of 403 and above is at the same level as in the SPAN 053 course prerequisite and an appropriate addition. (M/S;Huffman.Norris) 8-1-0. Prerequisites/Co-requisites There was discussion of a future agenda item to add MATH 910 to all the remaining courses that require MATH 025 and MATH 030 in their prerequisites. This crosses several disciplines. To date we have been reviewing these one course at a time. This will be a future agenda item, in time for the next catalog deadline. CHEM-006 add MATH 910 to prerequisite. Approved. (M/S;Norris.Gardner) Disproportionate Impact The committee reviewed the updates to the form that Paula worked on from the May 2nd recommendations. Gil, Paula and Laurie will work on the form with the additional suggested changes. Some of which are: Have an instruction cover sheet that has the Title 5 paragraph with added instruction on the two ways to proceed. Title one a Content Review request and have another separate Statistical Review request. A clear timeline with steps In the table column two- #1 add to sentence of faculty teaching course after syllabi to clarify. It was suggested to have separate forms for content review and statistical review both including a clearly stated cover-page on what to do. The IDEA committee concerns brought to Academic Senate were discussed. Janice did reach out to IDEA but they did not send any representative to Curriculum. The Curriculum committee is not creating policy, only a process for the college to use to be in compliance. The State wide policy was researched and passed through the appropriate legislative bodies. The Maldef study was used in determining policies. The State Academic Senate stated very clear reasons and evidence for the policy. The research is available and Janice will forward links to the IDEA group for their information and clarification to clear up any misunderstanding. Programs Environmental Science Approved to remove from inventory. (M/S;Norris.Gardner) 5-3-1 . The discussion points were: Do we have options to consider for ramping up the program/course selections to keep it going? No enrollments in most of the environmental courses make it difficult to keep the program active. What other options could make it viable? Resources at this time are not available, nor the student enrollment. Removal from the inventory will not be final. It can be re-activated within 3 years or a new program could come forward through the usual processes. Credit by Exam SPAN did not bring forward any request for credit by exam for curriculum. At this time there are no credit-by-exam courses for Ӱɴý. This will be a future curriculum agenda item to push for courses to be offered by credit-by-exam and in time to make the next catalog year. Certificates-Requirements for Proficiency Janice checked other colleges to see if proficiency in Math, English and computers is required. She found that the majority of colleges do not require this. The history of proficiency requirements and why Ӱɴý has them is unknown. Title V states that any sequence of 18 or more degree applicable units in a major. It does not state you cant have proficiencies. The outcome of the discussion was that Kiran will send an email out to all the CTE programs and ask the CTE committee to make a recommendation to bring forward on what they would recommend. There are additional disciplines with certificates outside of CTE. This will be brought forward as a FA12 agenda item. Credit for Experience The only way to receive credit for work experience in a students major or other means is to take a credit-by-exam. The exam would need to go through the Curriculum Committee process as established. When Curriculum Committee prepared and passed the rubric and form for credit-by-exam we felt that the in good standing unit requirement of none was appropriate for Ӱɴý. WASC accreditation standard does not allow for zero units. Janice provided other college examples for reference and these ranged from 6 to 12 or not defined. A motion was made to establish 6 units successfully completed as our units in good standing revision. The form and catalog will need to be updated with the revision. (M/S;Huffman.Norris) Unanimous. Standing Items Academic Senate- It was determined that no Brown Act violation in the vote for the 18 unit GE requirement change occurred. There will be no re-vote. No other standing item reports today. Future Agenda Items for Fall 2012 Credit-by-Exam courses Addition of MATH 910 as a prerequisite to all courses requiring MATH 025 or MATH 030.
