Absent: Christina Goff; Grace Villegas Guests: Political Science students visiting for Milton Clarks class: Lindsay, Victor and Meghan. Robin Armour, Director of Admissions and Frank Dorritie, Recording Arts. Announcements & Public Comment Susie announced that it was Robins birthday today! Happy Birthday Robin. Welcome to visitors and new student representative, Sherrie Anderson. Kiran asked for a future agenda item to discuss graduation requirements for certificates. This is no longer allowable to add graduation requirements on top of major requirements. Example Ӱɴý requires Mathematics, English and Computer Literacy requirements in addition to the major to get a certificate of achievement. This is catalog deadline sensitive. Approval of todays Agenda- Approved with removal of ATH 067; RA 10, RA 21 and RA 25 from the consent agenda to be discussed separately. (M/S;Stricker.Hailey). Unanimous Minutes from September 5, 2012 Approved as written. (M/S;Stricker.Gardner). Unanimous Consent Agenda HUMAN 040 Opera: the Human Experience in Music, Voice and Drama. Inactivate. Approved. (M/S;Hailey.Gravert) Unanimous ATH-067- Introduction to Sports Medicine & Athletic Training Change to PE 067. There was discussion regarding the KIN acronym and the tie to the AAT in Kinesiology. The AAT is still in progress for approval at the Chancellors site. If the department wants to change the acronym to KIN this would be a broader discussion in the department and could include other courses in the program. Currently there are no KIN courses. Approved to change to PE 067. (M/S;Karp.Gardner) Unanimous RA-10, 21, 25: Frank Dorritie explained the reasons behind the requested changes to these three courses. Because the method of instruction and course content will change the committee asked Frank to revise the course outlines of record to reflect the changes in pedagogy and bring it back to the committee. He said he would be able to do so. (M/S;Norris.Hailey) Unanimous Proposed New 900 course outlines None for this agenda. Proposed New Course Outlines None for this agenda. Existing Course Outlines None for this agenda. Prerequisites/Co-requisites None for this agenda. Online Supplements COMSC 125 Assembly Language Programming/Computer Organization Tabled for author to work on #3 and #4. Show how effective student/instructor contact is made in the lab. What is the pedagogy and define what is done. Include how the lab is assessed by instructor with an example. In the CSLOs the lab hours in CSLO 1, 2, 3 dont add up to total hours of lab. Kiran will work with Louie on this revision and it will be brought back to committee. (M/S;Gardner.Gunder) Unanimous MATH-034-Approved with edits. Throughout the supplement change homework words to lab. Replace all fully online wording to partially online. More reference to what is happening at the lab for clarity. (M/S;Gardner.Stricker) Unanimous College Skills Certificates None for this agenda. Credit by Exam None on this agenda. Families of Courses Discussion This is another recent change to Title V regarding repeatability. Admissions currently reviews the petitions to repeat and goes strictly by the regulations. The categories of programs that can have a maximum repeatability of four are: Debate; Athletics; Visual and Performing Arts and courses that are a UC/CSU requirement for a lower division skill. Courses for which repetition is necessary to meet the major requirements of CSU or UC for completion of a bachelors degree are: intercollegiate athletics and intercollegiate academic or vocational education competition. This change must be reflected in the college catalog due to an anticipated mandated start of SU13. The new regulation has been approved by the BOG and is now at the Department of Finance. Therefore for curriculum purposes, a November 1st catalog deadline. It is a faculty/program decision if a family of courses should be designed, meaning re-writing some course outlines of record reflecting the content changes in a Beginning; Intermediate; Advanced; titled course for example. Courses wanting to have the repeatability need to prepare. A memo will be prepared documenting why this change has been mandated; what the process will be; a timeline and support for those programs who want to write/revise their course outlines to reflect the changes. Different levels of a course require different outcomes. Remember the goal of the repeatability is not to get around regulations. It is to move students to successful outcomes in their two year attendance at college. It will be scrutinized by the state in an audit. More regulations will be implemented if guidelines are abused. Kiran, Robin and Eileen will be working on the memo to go out quickly. Online Course Presentations The outcome of the discussion on presenting or demonstrating an online course shell to curriculum committee when the supplement is being reviewed was to not do this at present. Comments: Why would an online course be reviewed for approval in this body in any other way than a face-to-face course would be. In good faith this committee reviews and approves course outlines without knowing how the potential faculty member will actually present the outline in his or her class. Perhaps the Distance Education Committee should do this before the class comes to Curriculum. Concern for the accreditation visit was raised. As long as we have continuing improvement we should keep a balanced approach. Insite Curriculum Committee Page The curriculum committee Insite page was announced. Directions to review it shown. Membership who wants a hard copy of the agenda and documents can still receive them. Margaret made a note of those members who want a hard copy of the agenda and packet items. Future Agenda Items Laurie asked the committee for a list of future agenda items for the committee to discuss this academic year: Graduation requirements for certificates proficiencies for programs Catalog-Time Sensitive item! Improved relationships with faculty - Mentors Curriculum mix this issue was brought up at College Assembly. This item will be on hold since there will be more college assemblies for further discussion on this topic. Pre-requisite Liberal Arts Emphasis In addition, here is the list from the May 16, 2012 minutes: Credit-by-Exam courses Addition of MATH 910 as a prerequisite to all courses requiring MATH 025 or MATH 030.
