Absent: Gil Rodriguez, Robin Aliotti, Susie Purdy Guests: Troy Hess, Nancy Whitman Announcements & Public Comment The documents today were very complicated. Many documents were not in our packets and emailed out throughout the week which made it difficult to prepare. Curriculum Committee hopes that the campus as a whole disseminates clear information about deadlines and the processes so that Curriculum Committees work can be better managed. Deadline dates should consider the process of Content Review, Distance Education, and General Education Committees. These other committee processes should be taken into account for the latest possible submission. Approval of todays Agenda- The agenda was approved with the addition of BUS 051 and BUS 055 online supplements for review if time permits. (M/S;Gardner.Huffman) Unanimous Minutes from February 15, 2012 Approved. (M/S;Norris.Hailey) Unanimous. Consent Agenda EMS 010 Pulled to discuss as a separate item. HIST 029 & 030-Pulled to discuss as a separate item. EMS 010 Motion to leave the repeatability as currently stated at 1 repeat. Author was here to speak to the request and didnt realize the repeatability policies in place already. (M/S;Gardner.Norris) Motion passed. The Minor change form is withdrawn - course repeatability will remain as is at 1. Unanimous. HIST 029 and HIST 030 A motion was made to go back to the department to see what they would suggest since philosophy and religious studies do not fall under the history discipline list. The department could make another recommendation or just leave off interdisciplinary altogether. (M/S;Huffman.Gunder) Unanimous. The department can bring it back to the next agenda. Proposed New 900 Course- None for today. COUNS-040 A revised version was brought for review based on suggestions from the 2/15 Curriculum Meeting and a request from Richard Livingston to look at specific items. The following items are recommended to be updated: Course still needs a final exam or paper Discipline list to include those outside of counseling unless only counseling is going to teach it. Remove the sentence under discipline that explains counseling department expectations. Suggestions will be forwarded to author from Kasey regarding wording of catalog description to explain course would be open to all students, not only Latino or Chicano students. Infuse more course content. Use language from the books that were added to do your list. Terms from those books could be incorporated. Page 8 of 9 Course Content. Give dates of textbooks page 9 of 9. Motion was made to approve the course with the understanding the corrections will be made. (M/S;Huffman.Hernandez) 3-3-3 Tie broken by no vote from chair. The motion did not pass. The course is tabled for corrections. New Course Outlines of Record None for Today Existing Course Outlines of Record. ART 054 - Approved. (M/S;Goff.Gardner) Unanimous ART 074 Tabled. Talk to author and bring it back to the 3/21/12 meeting. 3/21/12 is the last meeting to meet schedule deadlines. ART 054 and ART 074 will meet policy guidelines for repeatability. Nancy Whitman wanted to speak to us regarding Credit-By-Exam policies. Her department has been giving the exams for many years based on practices put in place at that time. She feels strongly about the newly implemented practice because it will be and is problematic for students. Since the committee is looking at the process for the Ӱɴý faculty and departments to apply for approval of credit-by-exam, she especially wanted us to be aware of issues she has experienced. An example of a student who could not afford the cost for the exam was taking the class instead. (BOGG and Fee waivers will not cover credit-by-exam per Title 5). She was supportive of allowing for pass/no pass for the test (which would be allowed if the course is student choice however faculty would need to issue a letter grade and the grading option would be handled by admissions). (Some transfer institutions will not accept a pass/no pass grade which also has implications for students). Lastly, a form that asks the faculty for their test/exam to come through curriculum for approval infringes upon faculty members integrity and makes an assumption the faculty is not the expert in their discipline for providing a credit by exam test. She feels this is an Academic and professional matter. A draft of the proposed Credit By Exam Request form was disseminated. Janice will look into whether or not an exam/test must be submitted with the request form. Faculty can prepare an exam that is not the actual final exam for a course section. They can prepare a test that matches the COOR CSLOs and assessment and this body would only be looking at the content matches, and a rubric for grading- not judging the exam itself. More information will follow at another meeting. No action taken on this item. Online Supplements CHDEV-001-Approved with corrections. Email should be responded to within one business day.(M/S;Goff.Hailey) Unanimous CHDEV-065-Approved with correction. Email should be responded to within one business day. Take of the last sentence in #3a The instructor will log in two times a week to monitor, read what has been posted. This explanation is not required.(M/S;Goff.Hailey) Unanimous. CHDEV-095-Approved with correction. Email should be responded to within one business day. Remove last sentence in #3a as in CHDEV 065 above.(M/S;Hailey.Stricker) Unanimous. COMSC-124- Tabled. Invite author to speak to this. Unclear what is happening in the lab. Have questions about how this lab is conducted, sounds like homework. SPCH-110-Approved. (M/S;Stricker.Norris) Unanimous. BUS-051 and BUS 055- No time today, they will be brought back on the 3/21/12 agenda for vote. Note: Questions on policy changes to distance education online supplements should be a future agenda item. Best practices and the Distance Education Handbook had suggestions from a subcommittee in SP11 that need to be addressed. Margaret will forward Laurie the minutes from the Distance Education meeting where the subcommittee task force reported on recommendations for the policy and handbook in distance education. Program Inactivation/Change No time, for these items. They will be on 3/21/12 agenda. NOTE: Because deadline dates were confusing the 3/21/12 meeting will be the final meeting that courses can make the catalog and schedule deadlines. Anything not on the 3/21/12 agenda may be pulled from the schedule and/or may not be changed in the 12-13 catalog. Standing Items No standing items today.
