The Brentwood Center is collecting food for a food drive. Please bring donations to the Brentwood Center on Friday. Distribution to families will be held on Saturday at the local church. Camp Course Outline was very successful. There were five completed course outlines by the end of the session. Two more dates are scheduled for this month: March 20 and 27. Janice, Nancy and Laurie attended the session. Approval of todays Agenda Agenda was approved (M/S;Goff/Boehme Unanimous) with the following changes: Consent Agenda: Add BUS 35, 65, COMSC 31, 41, 61 and LIBST 14. At the last meeting, these courses were changed to have more lab hours than lecture hours .Because of this, these courses are no longer repeatable. Repeatability needs to be removed. Approval of Minutes from February 18, 2009 Change: Under Accreditation, the other two topics that were brought up were 1) disproportionate impact study and 2) cultural sensitive pedagogy. Curriculum Committee Deadlines The committee discussed the various deadlines, the meaning of these deadlines as well as what the roles people (CC Chair, CC members, Deans) play with these deadlines. There are deadlines for 900 courses, courses for online supplement forms, catalog deadlines, etc.. It has been past practice to link the deadlines with class schedule building deadlines. The Curriculum Committee approves curriculum and management is responsible for scheduling. Suggestions were made to place the various deadlines on the web page as well as to send out an email reminder for these deadlines. Fixed deadlines for 900 courses to be listed in the class schedules have been the last Friday of August and January. Accreditation Richard discussed the colleges situation regarding the status of CSLOs. Thirty percent of the colleges courses have CSLOs and seventy percent do not. At yesterdays Department Chair meeting, they discussed ways to provide resources to increase the number of courses that have CSLOs. This includes getting substitutes to teach classes so faculty can attend Camp Course Outline, compensating part-time faculty $250/outline and compensating coaches. A committee consisting of the instructional deans and representatives of the Academic Senate, TLP and department chairs will meet to discuss a plan of action to increase this number. Christina Goff is going to help during Camp Course Outline. Brainstorm Ideas/Suggestions: Professional development opportunity/instructional design Hold Camp Course Outline - 2 day variable flex in July Train one person in each department to become a coach. There can be different levels of coaching. Coaches attend Department meeting to help with outlines. Temperature gauge for departments Janice and the committee publicly thanked Richard Livingston and Christine Fithian for their work with Accreditation. Prerequisite Study and Other Studies The committee reviewed and discussed the results of the Pre-requisite Validation for English 3, Philosophy 2 and Humanities 3 study. The outcome of this conversation was discussing the viability of a concurrent enrollment study for English 100 for English 3, Philosophy 2 and Humanities 3 as well as approving the implementation of this Pre-requisite Validation study. M/S; (Ybarra/Goff) to approve and implement the study. Results of the voting are: 3 for the motion, 3 against and 3 abstentions. Janice Townsend, Chair of the Curriculum Committee casted her vote in favor of the motion. She stated that when the committee discussed to even do this study, she questioned the purpose of the study, and since there was a unanimous vote to commission the study, she casted her vote in favor of motion. She appreciates everyones passion for students. Lecture, Lab and Homework The committee discussed the issue that it would be worthy conversation to engage the college in a discussion to list the different and effective ways that instructors implement: lecture lab homework There are many creative ideas that instructors use lecture, design lab activities and assign homework activities and this information can be used to support each teachers growth and development. This conversation is simultaneously happening in the DE committee. As we get more familiar with the different effective instructional methods for both modalities the Curriculum Committee will better be able to assess the online supplement forms as well.
