The main points Curriculum Committee should keep in mind when reviewing course outlines are: A program or course must be directed at the appropriate level for community colleges; that is, it must not be directed at a level beyond the associate degree or the first two years of college. A program or course must address a valid transfer, occupational, basic skills, civic education, or lifelong learning purpose. It must not be primarily avocational or recreational. Programs and courses should also be congruent with the mission statement and master plan of the college and district. All Department Chairs and faculty should be made aware of these criteria. Faculty who are in the process of writing course outlines be made aware of the appropriateness to mission criteria before a course is written that does not meet these requirements. SLOs & Assessment Kiran Kamath is the lead for a task force on course level assessment. The task force will meet to support the updating of course outlines and make recommendations for the documentation of the course level assessments. To meet the accreditation charge to have all courses go through the assessment process will require a systematic way of collecting data. The software program CurricUNET has been purchased already. It can be programmed to collect this data. There are other options available as well. Once a course is assessed, outcomes could show not proficient resulting in re-writing of the course to show how it will be improved. Ideas expressed from this discussion were: Look at college examples that are already doing this. Cabrillo, Fresno were mentioned as examples. Attend the Student Success Conference, October 7-9th, 2009 at the San Francisco Marriot Airport. This conference is an excellent resource. Richard Livingston has information for those interested. Use Department Chair meetings or a College Day to showcase individual program assessment ideas. 900 Course Instructions- The outcome of the 900 course discussion from handout was: Bullet # 1 - Use all of the CSLOs: Curriculum Committee Evaluation Criteria Under Assessments: Bullet 1: Assessment instruments are listed for each CSLO; and Bullet 4: Assessments include a final exam, final paper or final project. Under Method of Evaluation and Grading: Bullet 1: Grading is clearly aligned with achievement of the CSLOs; and Bullet 3: There is a percentage or points (or range of percentages or points) given for each type of assignment. Under Instructional Methods and Textbook: Use it all. Content box was a duplicate of Method of Evaluation and Grading so Janice will look into this for clarification. The directions for 900 courses on the webpage will be corrected and form updated. The online supplement form will still be used with the 900 form as past practice. 900 courses cant be GE. This will be removed from directions. Lecture, Lab and Homework Tabled until next agenda. Homework be thinking of best practices ideas for these categories. Research- The outcome of the discussion was a motion: It has come to our attention that the 2001 research study Disproportionate Impact Study; on the placement tests used for English and Math is out of date. This committee recommends that the study be updated and that the Matriculation Office commission the study as a priority. (M/S;Ybarra.Norris) Unanimous ENGL 100 prerequisite validation for English 3, Philosophy 2 and Humanities 3 study was approved last meeting. The committee wants to know if there is a large enough sample size to look at concurrent enrollment with ENGL 100 for ENGL 3, PHIL 2, and HUMAN 3. Humberto will explore if there is a sufficient sample size using ethnicity as a component. He will report back his findings on sample size. Reminder: when studies are commissioned we must live with results. CurricUNET Janice hopes to be practicing with the software this summer and be able to use it for Camp Course Outline in the Fall 2009. SGC Update- RAP proposals were reviewed. Lots of innovative proposals were reviewed.
