Laurie Huffman has replaced her on the committee. (M/S;Norris.Goff) Unanimous. Minutes from February 1, 2012 Approved. (M/S;Stricker.Gunder) 6-0-2. Consent Agenda None for today. Proposed New 900 Course- None for today. COUNS-040 Richard has reviewed the COUNS-040 COOR he would like to have further discussion and collaboration with the committee. Behavioral Science and Counseling were taught under one department until approximately ten years ago. This course changes what has been in place since the division for load and scheduling. Counselors teaching a course would take away from the counseling schedule. Richard has approved another full-time counselor hire. Committee discussion points are these: The discipline is listed as counseling only and since it has been placed into the Behavioral Science/Ethnic Study boxes, other disciplines should be listed. The course content area does not reflect the rigor of the CSLOs and would the UCs accept it? (GE committee does not look at course content when reviewing for GE approval and box placement. The GE rubric for approval into the Behavioral Science/Ethnic Study boxes was used in the GE approval process). There is no mention of a final exam or project in the COOR. Is the course content similar to courses already being taught? (EDUC-010 or AVID) More differentiation to distinguish between courses needs to be made. Is this really a support course and what is the purpose? (The UCs asked for a course for Puente). The outcome of the discussion was that the author will beef up the course content to meet the rigor of the CSLOs. A final project or exam(s) will be added. Christina said she will work with the author to make changes and it will be brought back to the March 7th Curriculum committee for a better job reviewing. Committee members asked to have some other examples of similar courses being taught at other community colleges. It does not need to go to the General Education Committee again. The author has worked hard to bring this outline forward and it is no reflection on the author that clarifications have been asked for. Richard will hold onto the current version of the course until the curriculum committee reviews it again on March 7th. New Course Outlines of Record- None for today. When Janice approached the departments that are currently listed as approved to offer credit-by-exam, all but SPAN were unaware they even had this option available for students. There was also confusion in the departments regarding prerequisite challenge exams and placement exams. After discussion of the faculty letter Janice had prepared a motion was made to revise the faculty letter with the following: Add a #10 that states: The grade the student earns on the exam will be the grade given on the student transcript. Item #2 would be re-written to state: The student must be in good standing (a minimum 2.0 GPA for continuing students) at Ӱɴý and not on probation or dismissal. Janice will add a sentence that clarifies that credit-by-exam is not a prerequisite challenge exam and will email it to the CBE committee for comment. These changes will need to go to marketing also. (M/S;Goff.Norris) Unanimous. The motion passed. Next steps The tests used for Credit-by-Exam must be approved by curriculum committee. Interdisciplinary Prerequisites. A straw poll was made around the table to hear what committee constituencies felt regarding what recommendation curriculum committee should make to Academic Senate regarding interdisciplinary prerequisites. The consensus was that the content review only method should be an option along with the current model of statistical analysis with content review. A motion was made to recommend to Academic Senate to push for a 100 percent content review method for interdisciplinary prerequisites. (M/S;Gardner.Hailey) Unanimous. The motion passed. Next Steps - Janice asked if Paula and Michael will work with her on a process to recommend next. 508 Compliance Report from Distance Education. Distance Education recommended that a check-off form currently on the Ӱɴý web pages and developed by Eloine Chapman be housed with the online supplement as a temporary fix for 508 compliance. Laurie will further discuss the online form and the check off list at the next Distance Education Committee meeting and discuss application of this for now. This is a college wide issue, not only affecting the online courses. More training and FLEX should be offered as a minimum for faculty on 508 compliance. A structural design faculty to prepare a 508 compliant template to use with COOR would be preferred. Janice will bring it to SGC to have them look into the issue deeper and make a decision on how to proceed and through what committee. Standing Items Academic Senate Report - Janice reported that Academic Senate has prepared a revised General Education Model that has minimum requirements of 18 GE units. This is what DVC has (and most community colleges in California) currently. This will be coming to all faculty for a binding vote soon.
