She has been waiting to take the course since its a requirement at SFSU. Several committee members mentioned that it had been inactivated due to having no instructor. The course is now only available at DVC. Content Review Laurie opened up the floor to all for a discussion on the Content Review process with the following questions: How do you see Content Review Working? Can we decide on a process? Laurie suggested training for a designated group who would function as point people for COOR authors seeking assistance with the process. Laurie noted that the process is slow and time consuming which was met with agreement from several members. She also noted that there is RAP money that is available for training and development of a Content Review process. Laurie expressed her feeling that its a conflict of interest for the Chair to be a Content Reviewer. Kasey expressed that the purpose of Content Review was to catch errors before COOR moves forward, and is a chance for authors to improve their COOR before getting to the Committee. Departments should be responsible for helping authors develop course. Alex questioned if Content Review should be from within or from outside the discipline. Christine noted that there used to be no Content Review, but too many COORS kept coming in and they needed to be weeded out and needs assessed. Clayton asked if there was a policy in place which defined the Content Review process. Does a document outlining the purpose exist? Is there a specified set of duties for Content Review? Christine offered that the Senate did create a flow chart of steps at one time. Faculty should know how to write COORS. Eileen said that when Janice transitioned out, the Faculty lost their coach and as a result the coaching has joined with Content Review and functions as one-in-the-same. Its as if the coaching step has been lost. Natalie offered that training and coaching should never go away. Not everyone is up to speed on writing COORS. We need Content Review for that extra set of eyes. Yongmin discussed the need for Content Review to remain focused on content and not get distracted by format. The subject matter is the focus and Content Reviews purpose. He suggested a template, or standard for people to use. Kasey created a flow chart on how to handle the process of Content Review which includes a training step for faculty. It suggests using videos and/or online training Natalie talked about Mission Colleges training program which offers online links and tutorials that use screen shots. Nancy noted that coaching is part of professional development and every department has an obligation. It was decided that the issue of revising or developing a better Content Review process, which involves training and a more structured process, needs to be discussed further. New Programs - None on this Agenda New Course Outlines of Record ENGL 135 Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Studies: Jeffrey Mitchell developed the course. It has been a professional goal of his for some time. His hope is that this is course will be the first step towards developing the subject into a degree. DVC offers the course, Napa City College offers a Certificate in LGBT Studies and SDSU is the first CSU to offer a Bachelors degree in LGBT Studies. Course can be taught in many disciplines; it is interdisciplinary in nature. Nancy posed the question about what disciplines should teach the course. Christina suggested that it could be cross listed. The question of whether it should be listed with Sociology or Social Science was posed and it was decided that the question should be further researched. The grading needs to be changed from Student Choice to Letter Grade. Change the wording in the Schedule Description from, and only a little over one year to and only very recently. Consider changing people in the phrase LGBT people to community. The word appreciation as a CSLO might need to be re-examined.
