The colloquium was to discuss possible Title 5 changes in the English and Math requirements for Associate Degrees. There were two such colloquia in the state prior to the voting in the fall plenary. A representative from the Ӱɴý Academic Senate would vote at the plenary representing Ӱɴý's views. Ӱɴýs English 10S already satisfies the higher level under discussion in the state. The discussion at the colloquium regarding Math was whether to raise the graduation requirement to Intermediate Algebra (instead of the current Elementary Algebra). Ӱɴý currently requires Elementary Algebra. Kiran will advise the Academic Senate to vote on two new representatives to the Curriculum Committee starting Fall 2004 for two years since Pam Perfumo and JJ Stewart will rotate off at the end of this academic year. ONLINE COURSE APPROVAL PROCESS AND FORMS Laurie Huffman and Clayton Smith presented the draft of an Academic Senate Position Paper for Online Instruction at Ӱɴý. Authors of the position paper are: Laurie Huffman, Kiran Kamath, Cherry Li-Bugg and Clayton Smith. The first draft was discussed at the Academic Senate in Spring 2003. It is again scheduled for a second reading at the Academic Senate in Spring 2004. The discussion included the definition of Completely online, Partially online and Supplemented online courses. Only the former two require specific and separate approval of the Curriculum Committee. Fully online courses cannot require students to come to the campus for any portion of the course. An Online Advisory Committee to the Curriculum Committee will be formed to assist faculty who would like assistance in developing online courses. The Advisory Committee will also review online course outlines and provide input for the Curriculum Committee to consider in approving the course outline. This Advisory Committee will be comprised of 3 members the Online Committee Representative to the Curriculum Committee and 2 other members of the Online Committee. The Online Course Supplement to the COOR was again discussed and minor changes were recommended to the form. This form should be completed for all new courses as well as courses that were face-to-face, but that are now intended to be taught online. Motion to approve the Online Course Supplement to the Course Outline of Record form with the Curriculum Committee Action (signoff) at the bottom. Motion: Laurie Huffman Second: Myra Snell (Vote Yes one abstention) ADVISORY COMMITTEES TO CURRICULUM COMMITTEE ROLE AND APPROVAL PROCESS There are four Advisory Committees to the Curriculum Committee: GE Ethnic Studies Ethical Inquiry Online Instruction What is the role of the Advisory Committee? It should be a small group w/expertise in the subject area who can give advise and constructive feedback the faculty member/s developing the course outline. This group does not have veto-power. This group also reviews the course outline and provides an opinion to the Curriculum Committee. The Curriculum Committee is not bound by the advise of the Advisory Committee. How will the course outlines be routed to the Advisory Committees? Here is the routing sequence. All completed Curriculum forms (along with electronic copy of COOR) should be turned into the Senior Dean first. Senior Deans will route COOR (and other forms) to the appropriate Advisory Committee After review by Advisory Committee, the COOR is sent back to the Senior Dean The Senior Dean then forwards the forms to the Curriculum Committee Chair to be placed on the Curriculum Committee agenda. There was a separate discussion as to whether there should be a 5th advisory committee on writing Student Learning Outcomes. It was decided that the Curriculum Committee Representatives of each area they represent should serve as consultants/mentors to do this. Kiran will work with leaders of the Advisory Committees and Senior Deans to develop a memo and the best means to inform the Ӱɴý community about the formation and role of these advisory committees. It was suggested that a memo be developed for the college, that the information be posted on the Curriculum Committee website on the Ӱɴý intranet, and that this information be included on course outline deadlines and instructions from the Senior Deans when appropriate. UPDATE FROM SHARED GOVERNANCE COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE: Richard Livingston reported that all Block Grant and Finance Planning Model Proposals have been banded and sent to the President.
