After discussion, the decision was made to plan ahead for an August 2005 flex activity or a for a Monday afternoon meeting in Spring 2005. This item will be placed on a future agenda for further discussion. Approve agenda and minutes: Agenda: Approved with the following change: Remove Earl Ortiz name from the GE Advisory Committee (M/S Ybarra; Bolds) Approved unanimous Minutes from 10/6/04: (M/S; Ortiz/Kaiper); Approved unanimous Instructional Program Approval Process Dan Henry gave a brief overview of the draft of the procedure to approve new programs. There are two phases to the approval process College level and the State level. It is usually a two year process for a new program to be approved. The Curriculum Committee is involved in the second year when the program/major requirements, course outlines and pre-requisites are being reviewed for approval. The committee will review the draft and vote on it at the next meeting on November 3, 2004. Consent Agenda: All changes to be effective in the 2005-06 catalog year. BUS 56 Records and Data Base Management. Change course title to Database Management Using Microsoft Access. This course was tabled until the next meeting on November 3 pending discussions with both the Business and Computer Science Departments regarding the title change. CHDEV 10 Child Development and Behavior. Change catalog description to required for CHDEV Major. (M/S Alexander/Kaiper); Approved unanimous Proposed New Course Outlines of Record COMSC 90 PC Repair Hardware (A+ Certification). Tabled until a future meeting. Some suggestions on this course outline: Course name on front page is different from the header. Begin teaching in Summer 2005 or 2005-06 catalog year. Course Discipline Why not add CIS? Remove the words full semester from the catalog description. Since this is the first of three courses, suggest developing all three courses at the same time in sequence. Include I, II, III in the titles of the three sequential courses. Will this be a new Locally Approved Certificate program? Course should be degree applicable. Remove Yes to COOP. Suggest removing the PSLO information from the form as it is the same as the CSLO currently. (PSLO information is not required till Spring 2006, to give departments time to determine these details.) GE Advisory Committee recommendations to Curriculum Committee for Ӱɴý GE Courses taught online re: Oral Communication Criterion Nancy Ybarra distributed an excerpt from the minutes of the September 21 meeting of the GE Committee. After discussion the following motion was made: The original GE criteria should remain unchanged. Courses should provide regular opportunities for students to explore ideas and communicate orally. Students should demonstrate to ability to speak effectively in both small groups and whole class presentations. The burden of proof rests with the instructor to show that this GE criterion is being met in a completely online GE course. A GE course being offered completely online would need approval by the GE Advisory Committee to the Curriculum Committee. The Online Supplement form should be reviewed by the Online Advisory Committee to the Curriculum Committee for partially and completely online GE courses. The Online Committee may offer technical suggestions on how to meet the Oral Communication criterion for a GE course when the course is taught completely online.
