LOS MEDANOS COLLEGE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE_______________________________ Minutes for September 7, 2005 Room 409 1:00 3:00 p.m. Present: Ken Alexander (Chairman), Ed Bolds, Kiran Kamath, Marie Karp, Richard Livingston, Shalini Lugani, Delores McNair, Earl Ortiz, Elizabeth Pearman, Georgette Pulos-Fulk (Secretary), Shannon Ramirez, Gil Rodriguez, Clayton Smith, Myra Snell, Janice Townsend, Eileen Valenzuela, Nancy Ybarra Absent: Laurie Huffman (alternate for Scott Cabral this semester), Student Representative Announcements and Public Comments: Ken announced that Jeff Frates, who was scheduled on todays agenda, will not be here. He and Richard will speak for him. No public comments. Approve agenda and minutes: Agenda: Approved with the following additions: MUSIC 900 courses will be removed from the agenda. They should not have been on the agenda as they have already been offered. COMSC 900 course (Introduction to Gaming) should be have an effective date of SP 06. Add AP Courses for Credit as a Fall agenda item (M/S; Snell/Smith) Unanimous Minutes from 8/31/05: Approved with the following changes: Under membership/introductions add Delores McNair and Earl Ortiz. Pg 2 Pg. 2 SLO 2 heightened social agency. Change wording to read It is a matter of validating the social condition that students enter with empowering individuals to be critical of society and their experiences. (M/S; Snell/Bolds) Unanimous Consent Agenda: The consent agenda was approved as follows: HIST 46LS, 47LS, 49LS. Add discipline of Anthropology. Rationale: Ethnic studies are interdisciplinary by nature. Adding Anthropology to the disciplines broadens the pool of instructors who would be qualified to teach these courses. (M/S; Smith/Ybarra) Unanimous Proposed New Course Outlines of Record None for todays meeting. Existing Course Outlines of Record None for todays meeting. Proposed New 900 Courses Ken discussed deadlines for submission of proposed new 900 courses. Departments should know that the deadlines will be upheld. If proposed course is submitted after the deadline, there is no guarantee that it will make it into the schedule. Curriculum Committee function is to evaluate and approve curriculum. Gil, Richard and Kiran (Deans) will use their flexibility and discretion to insert late, but approved, courses into the Schedule. Ultimately, this benefits both students and the Colllege. The following courses were approved with changes: ADJUS Basic Gang Investigations (SP06) Suggested changes: Add discipline Grading Option should be indicated Add Course Number Under Schedule Description remove opening phrase from the first sentence (You will be able to). Explain how street gangs developed, and evolved? (Strengthen content) Elaborate on inclusion of ethics and cultural values of different groups and law enforcement agencies. Under Evaluation Criteria CLOs on degree applicable courses must be able to be measured. Evaluation criteria should be edited. Course content Item 3 change Affects to Effects Require some form of a final exam or evaluative activity Kiran should discuss the suggested improvements with the author. If the course is to be resubmitted as a regular offering, it will need more work. If changes are made, there is no need to return it to the Committee. (M/S; Townsend/Karp Unanimous COMSC Protect Yourself from Internet Dangers (SP06) Note: This course should be listed as CNT instead of COMSC. Suggested changes: Under Credit/No-Credit (CR/NC) it should be stated that a score of 70% of possible points or more would earn credit Under 69% would result in NC/No Credit Under methods of evaluation/grading #3 Quiz should be changed to final exam. Repeatability is OK due to rapidly changing technology Add critical thinking verbage Hours should be 12 schedule info says 10. Change times to 1:00-4:00 from 1:00-3:00. This was submitted on an interim form Pg 2 Change This class is intended to help anyone who uses a computer at any level to better protect themselves .to design a system which will protect (M/S; Snell/Lugani) Unanimous (Minor changes does not need to further committee review.) COMSC Computer Forensics (SP06) Suggested changes: Make schedule description more interesting. See Pg 2 High tech crime is on the rise perhaps add this phrase to the description. Discipline should be COMSC and CIS (M/S; Snell/Ortiz) Unanimous (COMSC Introduction to Gaming (SP06) Suggested changes: Change from letter grade to credit/non-credit or student choice Correct spelling to consoles in schedule description Change spelling to Gaming both in title and on page 2. Clarify instructional methods Add CIS to discipline (M/S; Ybarra/Smith) Unanimous (Course returned to dean for minor changes to schedule description). Non-Traditional (Online Courses) BUS 58 Business English (Partially online SP06) Approved with changes. Suggested changes: Pg. 1 bottom section - Change to e-mails to be answered within one business day . This is standard wording. (M/S; Bolds/Karp) Unanimous BUS 80 Ten Key/Data Entry (Partially online SP06) Approved with the following discussion items. Phrase correct posture How would this be done online? Online Committee looks for instructor/student contact how to do discussion boards and chat There is a bigger issue are there certain curricula that are not suitable for online instruction? Student/teacher contact how to do this so that students achieve student SLOs. *FUTURE AGENDA ITEM Are GE requirements being met? (M/S; Smith/Snell) Unanimous COMSC 53 Advanced Visual Basic Net (Completely online SP06) Approved with the following changes: Change response time to one business day from 24 hours. Credit//NonDegree or Transfer Course. Dean will follow up with a Minor Change as it should be Degree Applicable. (M/S; Smith/Lugani) Unanimous 900 Submission Deadlines (Jeff Frates) Discussion as follows: Deadline issues are a particular problem to COMSC as they dont get feedback on 900 courses until after the deadline is over The field changes so rapidly that it is not realistic for decisions for new 900s made in May/June to be applied in January, or for decisions in December for the following August. Is there some way to allow faculty to be innovative but still responsive to the schedule deadline in early September? Innovative areas solution might be to do courses on line. If deans OK, how would online courses be evaluated? Perhaps deans could sign off on 900s. More time for 900 courses if they were offered online. If courses are not in the schedule, it affects recruitment and enrollment in the course. I.T. is currently doing a survey of students to see how many are using online services If courses are listed only on the website, the schedule is a struggle Targeted groups/general interest might not find a room at a time the students are interested in taking the course Perhaps the deans can bring online issues to the committee Too much responsibility for the deans to do this Move deadlines for 900 submittals back two weeks as easily avoidable errors are being missed in order to make the deadline At the end of January/August deadlines Shannon would need to do imputing ASAP Can we put online in the same deadline schedule? Brown Act issues agendas that are only posted electronically are still legally published. Deans keep a lookout for problem enrollments during the summer Some courses get late enrollments Computer Science always has late registration Address the problem from both ends; work with instructors earlier in the cycle Perhaps the first Curriculum Committee meeting of each semester could be three hours to allow more time Faculty to fill out forms if they are thinking about offering any new 900s on line. Forms should be sent out earlier in the process Set a new, earlier deadline only asking faculty to indicate plans for new 900s on a heads-up basis It is difficult for faculty to decide in April what they are going to teach in January If 900s miss the paper schedule, they can be put in an online schedule Suggest moving new deadline to the second turnaround. Problem with this could be no classrooms available at prime time. Upcoming agenda item: A new deadline/timeline for 900s. A subcommittee will work on a calendar for a new deadline. Committee to include: Shannon, Eileen, Kiran, one or two faculty members, Betty, Clayton and Ken. Kiran will convene this group. Discussion of Curriculum Committee Procedures Alternates Roles of reps If any members dont have an alternate, they need to appoint one. If you are a voting member, you have an obligation to appoint an alternate. Hopefully, everyone will have an alternate by the next meeting. What are the committee members perceptions of their role as reps? Follow through, make sure that things get changed Eileen is working on processes for follow through New members need an orientation. The new handbook will be finished tomorrow, it is on the website now. Reps do not traditionally have a role of helping authors write new COORS. It would be difficult to help write COORS if you had not written one yourself. Being on the committee would help a rep to give assistance if needed for COORS What does the rep report to the faculty? Deans will let reps know which COORS are out of date. If the author is struggling, they can go to the rep for help. Reps should support, if needed, in their areas. Do we want to offer support or just judge the COORS when they are completed? Ken will send a memo to faculty letting them know who the reps are from their areas. He will also urge faculty to look on line for forms and help. There was a suggestion to print out website instructions. Currently Christine uploads the website and Eloine programs. Perhaps we should change the banner to say Curriculum Committee Handbook. Memo should also tell faculty exactly what is in the handbook to give them a reason to go to the website. Update from Shared Governance Council No SGC update for this meeting. Articulation Update No articulation update for this meeting. Determine Agenda for Wednesday, September 21, 2005 Meeting Discussion of interface with GE/Online Committee. Could this be a discussion for the subcommittee? Discussion of Academic Senate suggestion of a Curriculum Committee Vice Chair Alternates and CC Rep roles Advanced Placement courses (Feb 21 or Oct. 5 meeting) Future Agenda Items for FA 05 To be discussed at the October 5 meeting: Regarding the consideration to offer CHDEV Correspondence Course. This a mail-correspondence course, self-paced with modules mailed to students. Discuss correspondence part of the course Janice Townsend will research the State Chancellors Website about correspondence courses. The issue of offering the correspondence course as a 900 for a fourth time will be addressed as an informed discussion after further research is complete Continue discussion on Advanced Placement Exams and credit at Ӱɴý Try to come up with a new deadline for 900s.
