The Curriculum Committee Self Assessment Form developed by the Academic Senate was distributed to members of the Curriculum Committee. Kiran will collect all the responses from members of the committee and present the results to the Academic Senate on May 16. The Academic Senate will have discussions on the value of continuing the S and L designations for courses at Ӱɴý as well as on the numbering system of courses at Ӱɴý. This discussion in the Academic Senate has been initiated by the Curriculum Committee after a preliminary discussion in the Curriculum Committee. All the members of the Curriculum Committee are encouraged to attend the Academic Senate meeting on May 16 from 3 pm to 5 pm. Richard announced that all 14 courses submitted to IGETC were approved, including HUMST 2LS. Richard congratulated and thanked Eileen for doing such an excellent job with articulation. Delores McNair announced that the Student Success Celebration will be held on May 13 at 3 pm. This celebration will include the Honors students, Transfer students, Scholarship recipients, EOPS, Child Development honorees and Service Learning honorees. If you know of students who are transferring, please forward the names to Marie Karp as soon as possible. Approve agenda and minutes: Agenda: Approved. (M/S; Kaiper/Karp) Unanimous Consent Agenda: DRAMA 40 Principles of Backstage Techniques. Change discipline to Drama, Stagecraft. (Change to be effective FA 05) Approved (M/S; Kaiper/Karp) Unanimous Proposed New Course Outlines of Record None for todays meeting. Existing Course Outlines of Record None for todays meeting. Proposed New 900 Courses None for todays meeting. Non-Traditional (Online Courses) None for todays meeting. Discussion of COOR, specifically the criteria in evaluating a course outline (Version 3 of COOR Form and Instructions) The Curriculum Committee discussed the third draft of the instructions to completing the COOR form for the Curriculum Handbook. Criteria for evaluating a course outline were discussed. Kiran will make the changes recommended by the committee and incorporate them into the next draft of the instructions document. Myra distributed examples of assessment criteria to the committee for inclusion in the instructions document. The proposed August Flex Activity/Workshop will provide an opportunity to refine the instructions document further, if necessary. Discussion of Course Approval Procedures When a Course Impacts More than One Department The committee discussed a recommendation for a two reading process when approving course outlines that have college-wide impact. At the first reading, there would be discussion only and no vote would be taken. After the second reading, the committee would vote. After discussion, the committee decided to continue the current process of tabling a course outline when it felt that additional stake-holders should be consulted prior to the vote being taken. Discussion of Ӱɴý Credit for Advanced Placement Exams Marie facilitated this discussion. She discussed the AP policies of several institutions including DVC, Southwestern College, Santa Monica College, CSU, and the University of California. Southwestern has a clear and very well written policy. Advanced Placement Exams are exams taken by high school students at select high schools. Colleges and Universities (CSU, UC) choose to give credit or not to these students. Some institutions give credit for scores of 3, 4 and 5, while others give credit only for scores of 4 and 5. Ӱɴý has a list of 7 courses in the catalog that give AP credit. Most Ӱɴý courses require a score of 4 or 5 to receive credit. Further questions to consider are: Should Ӱɴý give credit for a score of 3 on the AP exam? Should Ӱɴý add more AP options in addition to the 7 listed in the Ӱɴý catalog? What is the best venue for further discussion at Ӱɴý? Should this discussion begin in the departments? What are the enrollment implications? Which local feeder schools offer AP exams? Which AP exams do CSU and IGETC give credit for? Update from Shared Governance Council SGC has begun a preliminary discussion to update college goals now that the Financial Planning Model process is complete for 2005-06. Articulation Update CSU has withdrawn from the CAN system of course articulation. Determine Agenda for Wednesday, May 4, 2005 Meeting Develop sample course outlines to include in the Curriculum Handbook and on the Curriculum Committee website. (Committee members are requested to bring a sample course outline each for a hands-on workshop and discussion at the next meeting.) Review first draft of Curriculum Handbook Discuss self-evaluation of the Curriculum Committee prior to presentation at the Academic Senate on May 16. Future meeting discussion items for May 18 meeting Final Review of Curriculum Committee Handbook Continue discussion on Advanced Placement Exams and credit at Ӱɴý Information on Senate Bills 1785 and 1415 re: Common Course Numbering and Lower Division Transfer Preparation Update on Curriculum Committee Website. Future Agenda Items for FA 05 Discussion on Correspondence Courses as a Mode of Instruction. We will ask Janice Townsend to facilitate discussion on this topic for a fall meeting since the issue of correspondence courses came up with a Child Development course outline that was tabled in fall 2004.
