Holtmann stated that FSCC met and discussed goals for the semester. He requested input on the academic and professional matter of the Governing Board budget process. Should Senate meet with the Governing Board to discuss this issue? The other item that was discussed at FSCC was the District Governance Council. Senate agreed that the decision process should remain in the Senate not the Council. Curriculum Committee (Holtmann). There isn’t a vice chair in the Curriculum Committee should the chair not be available. Further discussion will occur once statement is received from Curriculum Committee. Election of Liberal Arts and Sciences Representatives to Curriculum Committee (Holtmann). Lugani appointed to be the Liberal Arts and Sciences representative for the Curriculum Committee. Compressed Calendar (Holtmann). Yamakoshi attended a meeting regarding changing агАЩДЋУН’s semesters to a compressed calendar on April 15th. Notes from the meeting were emailed to Senate. The compressed calendar would make the Fall and Spring semester 16 weeks, a 4 week intersession during Winter recess, and the Summer semester will remain 6 weeks. In addition to the Compressed calendar they also discussed blocked scheduling. This schedule will allow us to get partial FTS for the last 10 min of each class. McCaughey states that the compressed calendar will conflict negatively with their clinical portion of the Nursing program. Nash stated that the blocked schedule will mainly effect those students who are only taking night classes. This will force faculty to add additional night classes. Austin believes that the current semesters are too long, and that students would prefer to have shorter semesters. Nash feels that a compressed calendar would force us to have blocked scheduling. Lewis stated that due to laboratory shortage, changing to the compressed calendar right now would reduce the number of classes we could offer per semester. Perfumo stated compressed calendar had positive feedback from students at another District that she worked for. Norris stated that most of the math classes are 2 hours each day twice a week. Fracisco concerned that faculty and students would be loosing 2 weeks of vacation. Austin feels that there are many creative activities that could be done in the 4 week intersession. McCaughey will speak with faculty and see what they could change to work clinical into a 16 week semester. McGrath stated when Santa Monica changed to this calendar student from other colleges started transferring to Santa Monica to be on this schedule. Nash is concerned with the 4 week intersession. He feels that 4 weeks is too short of time learn enough all they need to learn. Norris suggested that certain departments such as Nursing remain with the 18 week semester, while others change to the 16 week semester. The calendar is negotiated with the UF and the District. Cabral wanted to know what type of classes could be offered in a 4 week intersession. Lewis stated that the compressed calendar could be revenue negative for areas such as Biology. If we offer even 1 fewer class per semester this amount will be greater than the amount of FTS we receive. Gottlieb stated that Saint Mary’s College requires students to take a class during the intersession. Davi wanted to know how the compressed calendar and block scheduling would effect the lab hours by arrangement. Cabral stated that he believes that students would not want to take classes during the intersession. Perfumo wonders how ESL and Foreign Language department would be effected with the new schedule. Norris states that the bottom line with the compressed calendar and block scheduling is to make sure that the facilities are being used as efficiently as possible. агАЩДЋУН already uses our facility efficiently. Nash stated that if we were to eliminate all of our lab hours by arrangement we would loose 10-20% of FTS. Austin stated that with the college expanding and that we will have more space, this idea is an exciting prospect. Students can get done with General Education requirements faster. Seems that with this schedule we will make more money. Lewis stated once new building are up, would agree to a 15 week Fall and Spring semester and 6 week Winter and Summer semester. Suggested that we make allowances for departments such as Nursing. At this point, Senate is not interested in pursuing blocked schedules or a compressed calendar.
