Who is it designed to serve? Will the program offer an Associate Degree? A Certificate of Achievement? The Associate of Arts Degree in Social Justice: African-American Studies at Ӱɴý will provide an intellectual home for the multi, inter, and trans-disciplinary examination, analysis, and non-traditionally deep interpretation of the experiences, traditions, unique challenges, and dynamics of peoples of African descent in the United States. We agree with Stanford University Professor Michele Elam that African and African-American Studies can profoundly impact the academic, career, social and political perspective, personal relations, and worldview of African-American as well as non-African-American students of all backgrounds. The curriculum associated with this degree offers a broad range of courses addressing historical, cultural, sociological, political, and psychological factors that affect the lives of African-Americans as seen through comparative perspectives. The degree will provide students with a rigorous and engaging intellectual experience in which students acquire advanced research skills and master the art and science of applying root cause analysis. This field of study will facilitate the exploration of the experiences of people of African descent in the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Courses in the program will examine the rich, complex African American social structures and cultural traditions that Africans in the Diaspora have created, exposing students to the historical, cultural, literary, political, economic, and social development of peoples of African descent in the Americas. Rationale What role would this program fulfill in the college curriculum? Why is it important to offer this program? The African-American Studies Program at Ӱɴý satisfies multiple General Education requirements and offers training of special interest to those considering admission to four-year universities and careers in education, literary studies, journalism, law, business, international relations, political science, psychology, anthropology, social science, theatre, performing arts and cultural studies, among others. It is fitting that we pursue these goals in conjunction with our Social Justice degree course in Race and Ethnicity, to underscore the connectedness of and intra-ethnic dynamics between African-Americans and many other groups and peoples. It is critical that we make this program available to our students at this pivotal time in our Countrys history. In Barack Obamas March 18, 2008 speech, "A More Perfect Union," at Philadelphia's Constitutional Center, he argued that now is the time to look more deeply and analytically at race beyond "spectacle," as he puts it. Which is what, unfortunately, we did in the OJ trial or in the wake of tragedy, as we did in the aftermath of Katrina or as fodder for the nightly news." In that Philadelphia speech, he insisted that we replace racial spectacle with substance by examining the historical tensions and legacy between whites, blacks, and other ethnic minorities, as, in part, a function of systemic socioeconomic imbalances that have been most recently aggravated, he argues, by unchecked corporate self-interest. As he so eloquently stated in that Philadelphia speech, "race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now." By offering this program, Ӱɴý will be addressing a need that is important to fill. Curriculum and Needs Assessment/Feasibility List the proposed new courses for the program, including the title, number of units, and a brief course description. N/A List the course requirements for the major. Enrollment projections are based on: [enrollments in experimental (900) courses to be included in the program; enrollments in similar programs in the college or nearby colleges; etc.] Projected Annual FTES (to be completed by the Office of Instruction) Year 1 ____14______ Year 2 ___28_______ Do other colleges in the district or in neighboring districts offer a similar program? If so, provide the rationale for duplicating it at Ӱɴý. Contra Costa College offers an Associate in Arts Degree in African American Studies, however it is not the ADT degree. By offering the ADT degree, our East County students are able to take advantage of the opportunity of reaching junior level status as a transfer student to CSU African American and Africana programs. For new CTE programs: provide labor market information and job market projections that support the establishment of this program. Sources for this information are provided in the Program and Course Approval Handbook (Chancellors Office). Also include the results of discussions with key local employers/potential advisory committee members. N/A What other departments at the college could be affected by adding this program? Explain and include the results of preliminary discussions with the affected departments. Various departments could be affected by adding this program including Drama, English, History and Social Science. The addition of this program would create opportunities for collaboration with these departments to schedule courses, possibly cross-list courses as well as partner develop new curriculum. Staffing Describe the initial staffing needed for the program, including the approximate number of full time and part time faculty and classified staff. Initial staffing needed for this program is a maximum of .60 load to teach the required courses. The electives are already offered and taught by current Ӱɴý faculty. Will new hires be required in order to offer the program? If so, are the pools of full time and/or part time faculty expected to be sufficient? Ideally these courses would be taught by a new hire with expertise in Ethnic Studies and African American Studies although it is possible the courses could be taught by existing fulltime and adjunct staff. How will the staffing needs change in years 2-4? Depending on the demand of the degrees, it is possible we will need additional sections. Operating Budget Outline the initial budget required to fund the program. Briefly explain any budget item as needed to make the purpose clear. Nothing beyond typical resources devoted to staffing institutional sections. Staffing (Types: hourly classified, reassigned time, stipends, student do not include faculty or permanent staff) Supplies Consultants Travel Interprogram (Copies, postage, etc.) Equipment (list all major equipment) See Instructional Technology Department for recommendations and cost estimates What additional costs should be anticipated in subsequent years? None anticipated. Facilities Describe the facilities needed for the program in the first year (classrooms, labs, offices, other). Nothing additional.
