Agenda Approved Changes to the agenda: Item VI.A (Hiring of Secretary) is a discussion item. Agenda Approved. 12-0-0 VI. Agenda Items Hiring of Secretary: There is discussion to hire a permanent secretary to take notes and take care of other office duties for the Academic Senate. Currently, a new secretary is hired every semester, and each new person that is hired has to be trained. The Academic Senate does have the money to hire on a permanent basis. Should the Academic Senate look into this? Job description, hours and salary are unknown at this time. Institutionalizing Student Assessment: Nancy Ybarra, Myra Snell, and Richard Livingston presented information. The Teaching and Learning Project was established by Academic Senate Resolution in March of 2004. The teaching and learning project is made up of a lot of people: Nancy and Myra are the faculty coordinators, the college researcher, all of the deans, chairs of Developmental Education, General Education, Occupational Education, Student Services and Library and Learning Services. This coordinating body is working to ensure that Ӱɴý will meet accreditation standards by 2007. The Teaching and Learning project is proposing a charge to many different groups within the project. The proposal has been endorsed by the groups that it will most directly affect. Ӱɴý needs to do this for accreditation and professional development for ourselves and for our students. The assessment should be measured at three levels: the course level, the program level, and the degree level. The TLP are now focusing on the degree level. The assessment task force came up with a pragmatic definition for the degree level. The degree level is a broad category and includes developmental education, general education, occupational education, student services, and library and learning support. The TLP and Developmental Education, General Education, Occupational Education, Student Services and Library and Learning Services are continuing and/or beginning assessment projects. The TLP includes coordinating the assessments of institutionallevel Student Learning outcomes or coordinate college wide assessment efforts which may be direct measures, indirect measures, and qualitative measures. The TLP encourages the chairs of each committee (Developmental Education, General Education, Occupational Education, Student Services and Library and Learning Services) assign faculty to run the teaching communities. What about non-general education courses? The TLP has been discussing ways to start addressing other graduation requirements not included in the Developmental Education, Occupational Education, or General Education committees. One possibility is forming a sixth group to include courses and faculty not already included in Developmental Education, General Education, Occupational Education, Student Services and Library and Learning Services committees. Many colleges include all graduation requirements as part of the general education package. It is on the TLPs agenda to deal with that. How will we know if this is working? It is up to the more localized groups to determine effectiveness and satisfaction. The accreditation commission will want to see evidence that assessment and student learning outcomes are being assessed and that the information gained from assessment is being put to use. Every group represented in the TLP reports on their progress. How Ӱɴý using the results from the assessments? The Academic Senate would like to see a short version of these assessment results. Senate Review and evaluation: The Academic Senate bylaws require a tri-annual self review and a unit plan. Management is not asking us to write a unit plan and has not provided us guidelines for a unit plan. Student Support Services (library, labs) is completing a unit plan. The senate has the template used for Student Support Services unit plan. The senate can either choose to modify this template or create a new template from scratch. Is unit planning appropriate for the Academic Senate? Should the bylaws be revised to exclude the unit plan from the Academic Senate? Does the senate want a statement to show our direction? The Academic Senate has a survey that can be reused for evaluation. A proposal to better disseminate information starting a newsletter was proposed. VII. Possible agenda items for September 25th Enforcement of Student Code of Conduct Revising the Evaluation Process Ethics code for Faculty Themes of Learning Communities Outreach to K-12 and Colleges Senate of the Whole Revision of Bylaws Meeting adjourned at 4:44 p.m. $23469@BDEGPWXZgt " 5 d % ' ) T U o J L N c ¾չՎh(zh h1h15>*\h1h#D\h1hIlhIlH*hIlhE h#D\hGhAh "h%| h y|h#Dh#D h#D5 hEkaJ hIlaJ h#DaJ h#D5>*h#D5>*aJ 5P!
