History: the Campus Change Network(CCN), which was renamed the IDEA program in 2007 on campus. A task force, now the Umoja Scholars Program, was formed in with the charge to help African-American students become successful in both school and community. The programs vision statement is Umoja Scholars Program is where dreams and goals are realized. The programs principle goal is to foster a community of cultural respect. Program components are: Summer Bridge, Counseling Services, Financial Aid Support, Family Orientation and Tutoring Services. The Summer Bridge 2008 will include: Math Refresher with an African-American focus, Study Skills Course, Student Services Presentations, Guest Speakers, Field Trips, and Socials. The Fall components are: a learning community (Math 12 and English 70), mentoring, student support groups. The Umoja Program next steps include connecting with Daraja-Umoja Programs state-wide and to invite and engage all constituent groups (i.e. students, faculty & community) Concern: Overlap with the new AVID program. AVID is a middle-school/high-school program that has a different focus than Umoja. Umoja has been contacting other campus programs and building relationships with them. Recruiting: Umoja will be recruiting participants with an information session before & after spring break, marketing through student mail/clubs/newspapers, and other announcements. Umoja advocates also hope the mentoring component within their program may also lead to school-wide mentoring. The Academic Senate can help support the Umoja Scholars Program by informing faculty about the program and request faculty allow Umoja Program coordinators present to classes. The Umoja website is www.losmedanos.edu/umoja 3Senate Announcements and Reports SGC (Shared Governance Council) A draft will be presented soon with the requests and recommendations for RAPs (Resource Allocation Proposals). Funding for these proposals is awaiting some final consideration. FSCC (Faculty Senate Coordinating Council) Not met since last meeting DGC (District Governance Council) Considering forming a new group to address and clarify the issues of academic honesty including disciplinary actions for the offense and the student appeal process. Topics to be addressed: a clear process for reporting an incident of student cheating; the next steps after faculty report the cheating incident, recommended disciplinary action, if the student is found guilty, appeal process. An Academic Honesty policy is in place but may need some updating to address appeals and recommended disciplinary action. Grade Change Policy regarding Incompletes automatically changed to Fs. In the process of developing a new program work with Webadvisor to correct this issue. It is not yet clear if the new program will be able to correct past Incomplete grades dating back to 2003. Curriculum Committee (CC) No report.4, 5Approval of previous minutes Agenda reading and approvalCorrection: add Richard Villegas and Van Boschetti to attendance. Minutes approved with corrections (13-0-0). Agenda approved (13-0-0) Discussion regarding placement of agenda items and agenda timelines and deadlines. Motion-Seconded to table this issue, and move it to the agenda of a future meeting.6Degrees & Certificates Task ForceDegrees and Certificates are a measure of success measured by agencies such as ARCC. Transfers are also a measure of success; an Associate Degree has an extra semester involved of coursework required. A Certificate is focused on a major and has proficiencies and is not currently designed for transfer. Do we need to create a Certificate of Transfer Achievement, and if so, how will that affect Associate degrees numbers? Other community colleges offer and/or are considering offering a Certificate of Achievement in transfer; so if such a certificate is created how will that affect Ӱɴýs ranking compared with other colleges in regards to numbers of Degrees and Certificates awarded? Creation of a Certificate of Transfer prior to July 2008 will be much easier for the college. After July 2008, additional documentation for the development of a new Certificate program development will be required. 7Evaluation Forms & FeedbackJanuary 2008 the Faculty Evaluation Forms were discussed and revisions proposed at a joint UF/Academic Senate meeting. Recommended changes: more training for evaluators, an essay format for evaluates to respond, increased student understanding, an ESL format and a guidebook. Forms Identified in handout as follows: Classroom Observation Form (1st page is Form A, 2nd page is Form B); the Student Evaluation Form is Form C; the Level of Performance Form is identified as Form D; the proposed Faculty Evaluation Forms submitted by Helen Alvstein are Forms E/F/G. Form A suggested changes: Question #1-Question moved to Form C Student Evaluation Form. Students who attend class on a regular basis would be more knowledgeable about instructor beginning class on time regularly. Question #3-Change question to Included in the syllabus are all of the following..and then change answer to yes or no with answer boxes accordingly. Note: both Forms A and E are very similar and it might save more time if the senate compares these two forms to each other. Senate decided to continue with Form A Question #5-Shades on balanced. Question #6-Suggestion: change this question to an essay format. Discussion about whether instructors assess the teacher-learning process with every single class session. Suggestion: even a casual check of teaching-learning process consisting of questions like Is everyone with me? or Does anyone have any questions? would be an assessment of the process. Discussion will continue at next Senate meetingAdjournment !#%'(*789<BCKL {sh]hsRh _hDOJQJh _h _OJQJh _hc}$OJQJh OJQJhih _5CJOJQJaJhihc}$5CJOJQJaJh^'hiOJQJh'"h'"OJQJh^'OJQJhc}$OJQJh8\OJQJhtr5OJQJhYf&5OJQJh'"5OJQJh\c5OJQJh5OJQJhc}$5OJQJ!BCL!
