Members Absent: Cindy McGrath, Ginny Richards, Joe Meyer and Pam Perfumo. Guests: Ruth Goodin and Sharon Wellbrook. ItemTopic1Call to Order (M. Norris): The meeting was called to order at: 3:06 p.m.2Public Comment (M. Norris): No comment.3Senate Announcements and Reports (M. Norris): Curriculum Committee (J. Townsend): Looking at how students can get credit at Ӱɴý and other institutions without having to take a course at Ӱɴý. Requesting that the Curriculum Committee (J. Townsend and M. Karp) be added to the next agenda to inform the Senate on issues and questions, as well as to discuss the creation of an Ӱɴý policy regarding curriculum. CurricUNET Training: Nov. 5th and 6th at the dept. chair meeting and the first week of Nov. for faculty. GE (S. Cabral): Had the 2nd G.E. Seminar: How students demonstrate that they achieved G.E. SLO 5 (students will have a world view informed by diverse social, global and multicultural perspectives). Discussion on an article from the last meeting. A student attended the meeting and participated in the discussion. The next meeting will have n article discussion and the campus community is invited (contact S. Cabral ahead of time to RSVP). SGC (R. Aliotti): Classified: Meet and Greet, Chili Cook-Off and working on DGC Accreditation Reports. ӰɴýAS: Working on grants for books on reserve, approving their budget and the Masquerade Dance. They are reporting that they have fewer Senators due to transfers and less club participation. Curriculum: CurricUNET training R. Livingston: Earthquake Preparedness Training district-wide. Governing Board: Talked about the Brentwood properties. They will be looking at access and environmental impact and a consultant will be assisting with that assessment. DSPS: Presented on financing Measure A. The District is heavily looking into International Education due to the revenue it generates. It is projecte that Ӱɴý has 47 FTES while DVC and CCC have more. Presentation on student leadership workshops. SGC will be having a retreat: Respect Campaign (student, faculty and staff interaction/civil interaction). Brief discussion on SB1440. Feedback on CUE presentation: Questions arose over Blas numbers being in direct conflict with CUE data. CUEs data was exclusive to a particular cohort while Blas figures where general numbers for the campus over a period of time. DGC (M. Norris): Looking at ways to slim down business procedures and policies over the next two years. TLP (S. Cabral for C. McGrath): Decided on the definition of a program: PDAC (C. Ryan): Offering a series of technology trainings. Interested parties should contact Clint with specific Want to provide a Leadership Institute that will cover topics like self-management and effective meetings. The group is reading Whistling Vivaldi by Claude M. Steele. It there is enough interest, PDAC will try and order more books and will host a centralized reading. TAG (C. Ryan): Discussed the two-day email outage. Testing power grid and backup power grid regularly. According to Michael Becker (Director of IT), restoring the tape would have taken just as long as restoring the database. 4Approval of Previous Minutes (M. Norris): Item #3 (Senate Announcements and Reports) under TLP should read Super 6 Areas instead of Super 6 Committees. Minutes were approved with changes.5Agenda Reading and Approval (M. Norris): Item #7 (Exemplary Program Nominations) should be changed from Jennifer Saito as the lead, to David Kail. The agenda was approved with changes. AGENDA ITEMS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6Appointments: Reassign Time Task Force (Austin, VonBergen, Saito); IDEA Rep (C. Ryan): Reassign Time Task Force: Richard Livingston: Setup fair procedures for evaluating reassigned time. Barbara Austin, Julie VonBergen and Jennifer Saito volunteered to be reps. The appointments were approved with no opposition or abstentions. IDEA: There were no volunteers for the IDEA rep position. 7Exemplary Program Nominations (D. Kail): David Kail gave a brief background on the PTEC Program and presented a draft of the Exemplary Program Nomination Application/Form for PTEC. The Senate suggested the following: Providing data for the 5th point (Programs that focus on student success and demonstrate effectiveness with evidence) in terms of how many students retained, completed the program and gained employment. Omitting the first full paragraph on the second page because its not necessarily accurate: The PTEC program has become the model for building new career technical programs at Ӱɴý. In the past, programs and classes have been considered successful if students enrolled. Little thought was given to how the courses would be used to secure a job in the future. Information should be more straightforward; streamlined; more specific. Make sure the example points provided fit the use. The example points could be used as titles. Might want to focus on women in PTEC as a good form of evidence, using numbers behind the examples. With the aforementioned suggested changes, the Senate approved the PTEC nomination for the Exemplary Program.8Computer Science AA Degree (M. Norris): Last week, Clayton Smith gave a presentation on the Computer Science AA Degree. Motion There was a motion to approve the Computer Science AA Degrees. The vote passed: 15-1 (B. Fracisco) -1 (E. Davi). 9Drama AA Degree (N. Garcia): Nick Garcia gave a presentation on the Drama AA Degree. The degree was modeled after the UCSB and UCLA degree program. The degree that would be offered at Ӱɴý, if approved, will be 18 units due to a state mandate on unit requirements for degrees. There are seven non-acting classes included in the degree. The courses have been articulated for transfer. Theater Appreciation will be a GE requirement. Students majoring in the Drama degree will transfer as juniors. Right now the biggest draw to the Drama program is acting and the department will look into having more/non-acting degrees as the department and interests grows. Concerns: There was concern over the name of the degree (Acting, Drama with an emphasis in acting, Theater Arts). There is interest in seeing data on labor marketing demand, articulation and degree names. All questions and concerns should be emailed to Nick Garcia. The Senate unofficially approved the Drama AA Degree. 10Institutional Effectiveness (M. Norris): Recommended/Suggested changes: AP 1012.01: facilitates decisions should be changed to makes decisions. AP 1012: Last paragraph, third line: how should be specified. BP 1009: Participatory DGC currently has an equal number plus one (Satellite/San Ramon). AP 1009.02: Didnt know the processes existed. Or is there a plan? Questions/Concerns: Does Brentwood count? Brentwood will get a seat when they receive official status. Michael Norris will take the suggested changes to DGC.11BSI Funding Proposal Process (J. VonBergen): A Basic Skills Initiative Addendum was added to the original BSI Proposal Form to insure that Basic Skills dollars serve Basic Skills students/projects. There are two points to address regarding the BSI Funding Proposal Process: 1) Appropriate use of BSI funding and 2) to take the BSI Funding Proposals out of the regular RAP process and put it into the Presidents Cabinet process like the CTE. J. VonBergen would like the proposals to go to the D.E. committee for evaluation first because their representation has the knowledge and expertise on the BSI needs, which may not necessarily be the case with the RAP representation/process. D.E. could screen the proposals and recommend precedence but who actually gets to decide what gets funded is the question. The state handbook is used to provide specificity as to how BSI funds can be appropriately used in the four funding areas (Organizational and Administrative Practices; Program Components; Staff Development and Instructional Practices). The desire for BSI proposals is for the proposals to go to the Developmental Ed to be ranked, to SGC for the holistic view/input and then to the President. Concerns/Suggestions: It was suggested that the definition of Basic Skills Students be placed under the title BSI Skills Initiative Addendum and also to refer to basic skills/ESL students to just basic skills for better clarification. There was a concern that the addendum wouldnt help solve the problem because if there is an assumption that 80% of the students are basic skills then any student served could be basic skills. Motion: There was a motion that BSI proposals go to the Developmental Ed. Committee for ranking, including knowledge of where their suggested funding point would stop, and from that point to have RAP consider the other BSI proposals. Suggested amended motion: Motion to have all BSI proposals go to RAP and regardless of what the funding outcome is, or what the President decides to do with the BSI suggestions, RAP puts its input and if the program doesnt get the funding from the BSI pot, then it also has a ranking in RAP to fall back on. It was decided that the first motion would go to the floor: BSI proposals go to the Developmental Ed. Committee for ranking, including knowledge of where their suggested funding point would stop, and from that point to have RAP consider the other BSI proposals. The vote passes: 12- 2 (E. Holtmann and L. Yamakoshi) 3 (N. Bachmann, R. Aliotti and S. Cabral). 12Changes to Governing Board AA Degree Requirement (M. Norris): The Senate discussed the elimination of the local requirements (P.E. and Bio-Sci. 5). Bill Fracisco, Janice Townsend, Colleen Ralston and Sharon Wellbrook will be the reps for Ӱɴý. The general sentiment was that the group was split on whether the local requirements should be eliminated and will present it as such at the district meeting. Concerns: The initial elimination of P.E. and Bio-Sci 5 will be followed by further eliminations (Ethnic Studies and Comp-Sci). Ӱɴý requires more units for degrees than other schools (30-36+ more units). By eliminating the local requirements students can get a degree without ever having to take a Biology course. P.E. and Bio-Sci 5 are important disciplines in producing well-rounded students. Students (especially CTE) should have a choice (elective) and not be mandated to take P.E. and Bio-Sci 5. Most students will choose the path of least resistance and too many degree tracks may result in Ӱɴý losing students. Ӱɴý should not capitulate to the push coming from outside of the institution.13Campus Climate and Respect (M. Norris): Tabled.14Shortening Add Deadline Even More (E.
