Concern: evaluation of adjunct faculty includes evaluation by department. Adjunct faculty working at Pittsburg and Brentwood could be required to complete evaluation by both Pittsburg dept & Brentwood NDFG. At DVC, evaluation by multiple departments is already in place. Ӱɴý is instituting multiple department evaluations this fall. Proposal to form a committee of 6 people to review the satellite campus curricular issue and report to UF president. Freds previous experience with drop-in mediation: government contracts for alternative mediation: short deadlines to resolve issues after discrimination complaint filed. Often takes a large portion of time allowed to get to the real issue Many 4 year universities have ombuds programs (resident on campus, whose job includes conflict resolution on campus, can include teaching conflict resolution classes. Ombuds person is a 3rd party neutral, gains acceptance from both parties involved in conflict, hears complaints, and usually doesnt have a supervisor. Confidentiality for individuals complaining to ombuds person. Can also include mentoring others on campus in conflict resolution skills Conflict is often caused by a perceived threat to ones interests, needs, values, by another individual/group/entity. Sometimes perceived threat is not obvious Administration would like some kind of entity for conflict resolution Senate previously discussed ombuds program option but did not approve. Concern: ombuds person wouldnt be truly neutral and trusted by all parties of conflict on a small campus Suggestion: Committee with shared governance composition could comprise ombuds program: management, faculty, classified staff. Could include student participation. College-wide participation for all constituent groups suggested by presenter and senators. Faculty & staff would get used to using program. Cost should be built into college budget to benefit all employees Concern: funding source for ombuds/permanent resource for conflict resolution among employees Napa Valley College has ombuds person, Napa is closest community college with this program Suggestion: coalition of faculty from among district might be more neutral than campus specific Community Colleges & Conflict Resolution resource list given to Peter Garcia. Efforts to get all community colleges to have an ombuds program Demographics play a role in conflict Management that is skilled in conflict management also helps reduce amount of conflict on campus Mediation training: includes being able to recognize bias, feel comfortable with both sides, relate to both sides Ombuds/mediator needs to be skilled in strategies to overcome conflict after dealing with bias & being more open minded. Having good listening skills and fact finding are also important Recommendation: ombuds or other group available for conflict resolution on a regular basis. Ombuds person should have training in conflict management and conflict resolution including listening skills, being open-minded, and strategies to overcome bias. Ombuds person could also provide conflict resolution training and/or classes to faculty & staff or other proactive methods Ombuds works towards having the two parties reach agreement. Ombuds dont have power to make decision. If not, cant mediate successfully. Sometimes conflict has to be resolved by other means (e.g. lawsuit) according to college and/or contract policies Ombuds/mediator could give a report that talks about issues and where college could make changes (policies, training, etc.) to meet college needs All constituent groups could benefit from conflict resolution strategies training Concern: would like more conflict mediation from management.
