Morgan Lynn will be heading the research and coordination with the high school counselors to find the best way to do this. Example in English: Students overall GPA 2.6 they will be in transfer level Math. Place majority of students into transfer level courses Co-requisite transfer-level courses are default placement in English and Math (FA16) Example; Students overall GPA 2.4 they will be placed in English 100X (to help students succeed in English 100). Scale up one-semester pre-transfer level courses in Math and English Changing from two or three level sequins to one semester pre-transfer course. Math is different (2 Pathways) than English which has 1 pre-transfer course (English 095, 5 Unit course), starting FA16. Create Supplemental Instruction program (SI) in transfer-level English courses: Currently thinking of holding Supplemental Instruction in traditional English 100 course for further support; student-led and peer-led supplemental instruction. Adkins pointed out to the article (The article was written by group of professors from various universities who collaborated together to write the article) that we are stewards of the curriculum; our charge to oversee curriculum. She explained some important points on the article that caught her attention; what knowledge should be included in what they call the GE Age old debate and who decides? This debate has been going on for decades; since 1960s, weve been having a lot of conversations about the curriculum and multiculturalism. Since the 60s, the curriculum should be inclusive; were no longer debating whether it would be a good idea to diversify curriculum, the debate has been how should be do it. Ӱɴý had the debate on campus and previously approved to take a 3 unit ethnic study course to graduate from this institution however she noticed we do not have very much content thus very little to choose from. Now a debate is should we call it, Ethnic studies or Social Justice; 40 years now of debate. T. Adkins explained the aspects of critical thinking and how it should be a pre-requisite and should be one all the time. She gave examples of her up-bringing in her household specifically by her father using critical thinking as form of discipline and examining oneself from their actions. She explains that its difficult to be a critical thinker in America and facultys charge/job is to educate students to become good employee for someone else; to build wealth for them. T. Adkins pointed out Curriculum stems from a singular Eurocentric perspective. She asked why is that? T. Adkins asked everyone to ponder in pairs to the question for 2-3 minutes and take notes of what they come up with. T. Adkins explained what is Eurocentric perspective everything we teach comes from a lens of someone who is looking through the world, their lens; not from Afrocentric perspective, Mongoloid, Asian perspective people who come from Europe. She asked all (including guests and students) to participate. Discussions in pairs took place. Some voiced out their discussion topics 1) As stewards of critical thinking, the conversation has to begin with those who are going to model out the expansion and we are first taking on what we are expecting and give examples of experiences of critical thinking. If we do not move from challenged conversation of what were used to and really open the dialogue to what we have to do then well never see the level of conversion of change. Were too late to introduce the pathway for them to start; they have to be seniors for this course however its been seen in other places in 9th grade level who did college in-concurrency; 9th grade students who received college instructions of preparedness in for low economic background. 2) The whole concept of critical thinking, in the end, do you know how the pieces are put together to get to where we are today. The European interest; theres a country that has educational institutions that are run by the same people who have an interest in bringing slavery into this country to develop a stronger way for capitalism and the change doesnt occur; it stays stagnant, they replicate themselves. Printing press they have control over and dominate what is printed and what information is available/disseminated. It was suggested to read the book, The Writing on the Wall; published last week. 3) We are an institution who values education, knowledge and learning, we have so many areas we work from however we do not challenge the emotion. When the emotions are not challenge, no growth happens. We end up with the same struggles over and over. The way growth happens is by challenging the emotion. Having grown up in an environment where there was a certain thought process and having young children that have done things different than what I want to do sometimes, it has forced me to, not necessary change my views but to understand that the purpose of life is for us to think and support a mindset that love and supports humanity holistically. Its not about necessarily changing our own core beliefs but its about expanding the belief to understand others. Students stays current, we are the ones that needs to have the change. We have to keep the historic mission but we have to expand our thinking in order to reach them. There are many different pathways in order to reach them. 12.Multiculturalism in Higher Education (T. Adkins) - Continued: 5) In terms of providing diversity and changing some of these perspectives, which are Eurocentric, we need to appreciate and understand the contributions African American has made to this nations and others contributions. 6) We dont have to do research anything; our students dont. This election is a big part of it too, the way they get things through media. Certain pictures are posted with caption with one sentence. They get so upset and accept it as a fact without any other research. Our job is to explain it but it will take you 5 hours to explain the one sentence. They are very receptive to that. 6) In many ways, Multiculturalism term can be problematic because it reinforces Eurocentrism. It multiplies other groups. Its perceives as normal. We have to be careful with these ideas of diversifying and becoming multicultural by calling out different groups. Ideally we ought to integrate other histories in a lot of studies. Theres a lot written on some of the shortcomings on multiculturalism because what it can do is where would think that its an acceptance of everybody. T. Adkins ended it with to put forth and maintain the superiority; the myth, the illusion of the superiority of the Eurocentric perspective. Its actually insane, its mental health crisis; it is not just my way, your way. This is insanity. It was added, we dont talk about it because its hard to talk about and its sensitive. Thats why I dont like online. I cant see the reactions and the body language that tell me more than your silence or your words. It was shared that the new Smithsonian African American will open on Saturday, September 24, 2016. S. Henderson will place this back on the agenda in one of the future meetings. 13.Task Force for Currently and Formerly Incarcerated Youth and Adults Districts Restorative Justice Educational Program (S.
