Members Absent: Bill Fracisco, Cathy McCaughey, Colleen Ralston and Lydia Macy Guests: Akilah Moore and Nick Garcia ItemTopic 1. Call to Order (C. Ryan): The meeting was called to order at: 3:05 p.m. 2. Public Comment (C. Ryan): Introductions: Guests and Senators. 3. Senate Announcements and Reports (C. Ryan): Curriculum Committee (J. Townsend): See the curriculum committee minutes provided. 4. Approval of Previous Minutes (C. Ryan): Item 6, #2a: Change Anthony Hailey from Curriculum Committee Chair to Occ. Ed/Curriculum committee representative for the Spring 2012 semester. The minutes were approved with the correction. 5. Agenda Reading and Approval (M. Norris): The agenda was approved.AGENDA ITEMS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Appointments: VC Hiring Committee, SGC Liberal Arts Rep (C. Ryan): VC Hiring Committee: Akilah Moore volunteered to sit on the committee. With no objections, Akilah will be appointed to the VC Hiring Committee. SGC Liberal Arts Rep: Appointment was tabled. Planning Committee appointments need to be added to the next agenda. 7. Senate Budget and funding additional release time for Senate President (G. Richards): The Senate has additional funding to fund up to an additional .25 load for an incoming Senate (.75 load). The additional funding came from the New District formula for distributing Senate money throughout the District and is on-going. There is an allocation of, $45, 644.60 which includes funding for .25 VP load, stipends, supplies, travel, retirement awards, ASCCC membership, and the hours and benefits for the minute-taker. If the load increases it wont completely max out the budget; there will still be some money for copying and other minor expenditures. The context for the increase was based off of previous Senate discussions regarding the amount of responsibilities that the Senate President has especially in times of low participation (i.e. committee representation). A memo was sent by former Senate president, Michael Norris advocating the need for an increase to the load before any volunteers had come forward for the Fall 2011 Academic Senate President election. Motion (M. Lewis): Motion to approve the additional .25 load increase for incoming Academic Senate President. Second (P. Perfumo), Vote = 15 2 (J. Henry and L. Yamakoshi) 3 (P. Perfumo, R. Talley and C. McGrath). The vote passes. 8. Audio Recording Curriculum Committee Meetings (C. Ryan): The issue of recording Curriculum Committee meetings was brought to the Senate due to a possible differing of opinions as to what was said during a Curriculum committee meeting last semester (Spring 2011). The discussion that ensued brought forth the following main concerns: inhibiting participation/discussion for fear of being recorded, and singling out one committee versus advocating for a universal policy on recording meetings for all Senate sub-committees. As a point of information, it was brought to the Senates attention that the Brown Act allows the public to record a meeting without the permission of the group. There was some mention that recording meetings could provide more transparency and would be relatively inexpensive to maintain. It was also suggested that sub-committee leaders have the proper knowledge on policy and procedure (The Brown Act), as well as, the proper training on facilitating meetings. Note: In 2004, the Curriculum Committee voted to not record their meetings. Motion (M. Lewis): Motion to let Academic Senate sub-committees have the freedom to make their own procedures and policy regarding the audio recording of meetings, with a deadline and report on their decision due to the Senate no later than the end of the semester. Second (A. Sample) Vote: 10 4 (E. Holtmann, J. Meyer, J. Henry & L. Yamakoshi) 1 (C. McGrath) The vote passes. 9. AA Degree requirements: topics 5 GE SLOs and Alignment with Title V (C. Ryan): J. Townsend provided the Senate with handouts of examples of other colleges GE SLO models. Ӱɴýs approach to General Education is an integrative approach. Originally there were eight criteria now known as SLOs. In 1996 the eight criteria were merged into five SLOs. A course is integrated into the GE model when a department discusses and then writes a course outline demonstrating its SLOs and GE SLOs. The GE Committee confirms whether the course outlines are indeed meeting both SLOs and GE SLOs. Other colleges have GE SLOs that are assessed as to whether a course meets a particular GE SLO. In the past, the integrative model was not by course but by the totality of the GE experience, with each area/department including an integrative course. Comments: The Senate has to look at the AA degree requirement because of SB1440. What does the Senate want to give up and what does it want to keep? The degree requirement is mandated to 18 units, and the State average is 24 units. The GE list is getting lower. Math and English are not GEs. Suggestions: Quantitative reasoning is the one thing missing from GE SLOs. It should be expanded by one GE SLO (Quantitative Reasoning) and draw in Math to align with the State. At GE meetings it is often assessed that Science and other disciplines dont fit all the GE SLOs. Suggest picking three of five GE SLOs and assess them really well as opposed to stretching a course to fit the five GE SLOs. If we assess three CSLOs, it would make sense to have three GE SLOs. A suggestion was posed to add the sixth GE SLO, choose three and then create a mock grid at the next Senate meeting. It was suggested that Clint attend department chair meetings to discuss the idea of a mock grid (initiates more inclusion, discussion and feedback from multiple areas). Revisit the position paper on the rationale (GE criteria). Concerns: The Senate should be cautious over playing with assumptions. 10.Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 4:55 p.m. PAGE PAGE 1 34 " ) * J U V u v C L a u v e f M N O S[ȿȿȿȳȳȿȳȳȳ~ho h+I6]^JaJ ho h+I^JaJ ho ho PJho h*PJho h+I>*PJho h+I5>*PJho h+IPJho h+I5PJho h+I5>*ho h+I>*ho h+I5>*CJ ho h+Iho h+I5145 !
