Henderson) Continued: Educational Presentation EOPS (Extended Opportunity Program & Services) & CARE Steven Freeman (Assistant Director) S. Freeman shared his background; originally from Chicago, Maryland for 9 years and how his background is similar to Ӱɴýs EOPS program. He read from EOPS flyer; Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS) is a state-funded, student support program that offers services that are above, beyond, and in addition to the services available to all Ӱɴý students; to students from low-income, under-represented backgrounds I higher education by promoting excellence in Enrollment, Retention, Persistence, and Success. S. Freeman shared EOPS has about 500 students; E. Costanza shared the counseling side role within EOPS. S. Freeman continued to share what EOPS does for our students: parking permits, survival kits, workshops, priority registration, transfer application fee waivers, Academic and personal counseling, calculator and book loans, book vouchers and peer mentoring. Students who participate in EOPS has greater success rate. S. Freeman share students scenarios and success stories within EOPS and how it helps faculty knowing EOPS students in their classrooms. S. Freeman will be working on faculty/students interactions. It was suggested to have more early alerts and the piloting in the FALL of more early alerts. It was suggested to stay in EOPS program and have more interactions with faculty to learn about students needs. S. Freeman shared what the CARE program; assistant with transportation, meal vouchers, child-care and single parent obstacles. He shared his background and explained the history of African traditional dance and music; Occasional music, Recreational music and Incidental music. He also shared his journey to Africa and how he shares Africa with his students with emphasis to West Africa. B. Ofori explained the roles and differences of all handmade drums that he was about to play for the group. B. Ofori and J. Waller played for group. B. Ofori performed at Stanford University during their Multi-Cultural festival. 9.Administrative Procedure 1009.01 Senate President Recent Update (S. Henderson): S. Henderson shared the response from meeting with Bob Kratochvil, Gene Huff, Dio Ship, S. Henderson, J. Townsend, Donna Wapner, Jeff Michaels and Louie Giambattista. S. Henderson share our concern about purview regarding curriculum courses. S. Henderson presented the Senate view of not just Child Development 11; it is also about when a course is approved, does the Curriculum Committee has the authority to approve the composition part. At the end, there was an agreement made the District is now trying to come up with a policy and procedure to address these particular issues. 9.Administrative Procedure 1009.01 Senate President Recent Update (S. Henderson) - Continued: Two meetings will take place; 1) how it will impact their process and 2) creation of committee and courses composition load. Discussions were around; It is 4-11 which makes it a negotiated item; not solely responsibility of Curriculum Committee, ones we work on the payment part, then the Curriculum Committee will have to work the process and if its a negotiated item, if it belongs to 1-3 or 4-11, binding decisions, changes in the hours, course objectives, course outline of record changes, composition load courses, if all the requirements are met what/who are we worried about?, business communication/writings requirements, defined guidelines, deliberation involvement, management not signing off on a course, new courses guidelines in comparison to existing courses guidelines, management shutting down conversations and using their authority, management shutting down the submission to Curriculum Committee for more lab hours in Biology due to comp load funding, balancing the budget is managements authority and to introduce courses that designs to bring disciplines together. It was clarified that the management, faculty and union will discuss and negotiate the procedures first prior to dealing with this particular course and for future courses. Henderson shared the discussions pertaining to the Grading Policy in the Position Paper; Grading Policies were delegated the Ӱɴý Academic Senate to the Curriculum Committee however it can be amended. Discussions were around; Does +/- and incomplete fall into Grading Policies or not? - This notation of Grading Policies only applies at the course level; they do not apply to the institutional level. Henderson shared that there was a big debate primarily on Resolution 9.08 (Associates Degree in Music) To explore the option to remove 6 units from the GE area to open up expansion because the Associates Degree and Transfer for Music; students are not getting into the program because of lack of skills 6 units would make a difference in terms of individual study. There was a lot of discussions around removing 6 units. The State will form a committee to discuss this topic. Another big debate around the diversification Resolution 3.0 (Diversifying faculty to enhance student success) First time that this had an open dialogue. The Senators openly discussed cultural discomfort; not really knowing how to deal with the issues of diversity. It was a healthy, robust discussion; it brought a whole lot of discussion, how do you really deal with diversity? S. Henderson encouraged everyone to plan on attending the next plenary meeting. 15.
