Members Absent: Coleen Ralston and Phil Gottlieb Guests: Kasey Gardner ItemTopic 1. Call to Order (M. Norris): The meeting was called to order at: 3:06 p.m. 2. Public Comment (M. Norris): No comment. 3. Senate Announcements and Reports (M. Norris): Library Hiring Committee: Please forward names to Michael Norris. State Senate Meeting: M. Norris emailed details of the meeting. 4. Approval of Previous Minutes (M. Norris): The minutes were approved with no corrections. 5. Agenda Reading and Approval (M. Norris): Reschedule Umoja presentation for the next meeting. The agenda was approved with changes. AGENDA ITEMS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Curriculum Committee Positions (C. Ryan): Math: Michael Norris will be replacing Julie Von Bergen in the Fall. Counseling: Marco Godinez will be replacing Phil Gottlieb. Liberal Arts & Sciences: Both Kasey Gardner and Dennis Gravert have expressed interest. Clint will obtain statements from both candidates and email them. English: No candidates. Brentwood: Peter Doob is stepping down. Pam Perfumo will continue for one more semester. Clint Ryan will send out an email requesting candidates for vacancies. 2011 John W. Rice Diversity & Equity Award: (C. Ryan): The nominee for the Rice Award is Silvester Henderson (nomination form and information was provided as a handout). Motion to submit the nomination of Silvester Henderson for the Rice Award. - (M. Lewis) Second: (P. Perfumo) Vote: 15 (L. Yamakoshi, S. Toruno-Conley, J. Henry, E. Holtmann, J. Meyer, C. McCaughey, S. Cabral, R. Aliotti, N. Bachmann, E. Davi, P. Perfumo, K. Wentworth, M. Lewis, C. McGrath and A. Sample) -0- 1 (B. Fracisco) Vote passes. 7. AA Degree Requirements (M. Norris): Title 5 Box D (Language & Rationality) Discussion: Defaulting to the State requirements eliminates Local AA Degree requirements. Clarification: The Math requirement isnt just passing Math 26 or higher, but also includes passing a proficiency exam for zero units. There isnt an English exam, but there is an AP. Some colleges satisfy critical thinking with courses other than Math. Math 26 cannot be eliminated. There might be courses, other than Math, that can fall under the rationale (Box D, ii). Motion to stick to the minimum of Math 26 (Geometry) or Math 30, or proficiency exam (Stick with Title 5 minimum for Box D, ii). (E. Holtmann) Second (M. Lewis) Discussion: The English Department agrees with sticking to the Title 5 minimum, but would like to open the conversation regarding the incorporation of critical thinking into all GE courses. There were concerns over the English departments assumption that other departments were not embedding critical thinking into their courses. The English department made the assumption based on course outlines that they felt did not reflect enough critical thinking. It was recommended that the GE and Curriculum Committees were the more appropriate bodies to express the English departments concern. Suggestion: Add communication courses (Journalism, English and Speech); add as much as possible that would fall under communication and Analytical Thinking. The purpose of having Math 25 was to get to the next level of Math for the AA degree requirements. Add our current Communication/Critical Thinking, Computer Literacy and courses with a Math 25 prerequisite. It was suggested that the second asterisked paragraph and third asterisked paragraph of Title 5 contradicted one another. In an 18 unit GE package, there are 15 units mandated by category (Title 5) and 3 units that a college can choose to focus on. D (i) and D(ii) of Title 5 cannot double-count for Boxes A, B or C. Recommendation to add: Speech 40, Math (higher than 30), suggest putting Philosophy back in, Computer Sciences and Computer Languages (C++ and Java). An important symbolic language is music (Music 15). Suggest world languages. The discussion that has taken place thus far is related to a reevaluation of the GE Model. The suggestions made could impact and undermine many departments and is politically oriented. Call the question (M. Lewis) Vote: 0 12 (L. Yamakoshi, S. Toruno-Conley, J. Henry, E. Holtmann, C. McCaughey, S. Cabral, N. Bachmann, E. Davi, P. Perfumo, K. Wentworth, M. Lewis and A. Sample) 4 (C. McGrath, R. Aliotti, B. Fracisco and J. Meyer). The motion failed. Note that the motion originator had requested that the motion be recalled but it could not because it had already been seconded. The next agenda will follow previous suggestions to familiarize with foundational/historical documents. Does the Senate want to put the emphasis toward extra units? If we do, do we want to include Computer Science, do we want to be more liberal (criteria for the boxes). Suggestion: The Senate should be looking at the criteria and breadth. Suggestion: The Senate should have a list of the other non-GE courses that could fit into GE boxes (available in the catalog). Provide the Senate with positions papers concerning proficiencies. Skip to Item #10: 1440 Degree (Communication). 10. 1440 Degree Communication (K. Gardner): Kasey Gardner gave a presentation on the new Communication Studies AA Transfer Degree. The degree was designed to transfer students to the CSU system to study Communications and efficiently earn a Bachelors with an emphasis in Communications. The reason he opted not to create a general AA degree for Communication Studies is because of the lack of demand for that particular degree. There was a discrepancy with the graduation requirement units. Corrections to the numbers will be sent to Michael Norris who will email them to the Senate. Motion to approve the Communication Studies AA Transfer Degree with graduation requirement corrections. (P. Perfumo) Second (K. Wentworth) Vote: 14 0 0. The vote passes unanimously. (N. Bachmann and B. Fracisco left the meeting prior to the vote, resulting in a change in the number of Senators present). Return to Item #8: One Time Senate Funds 8. One Time Senate Funds (G. Richards): G. Richards provided a handout with the results of the winning proposals that will be funded by one-time Senate funds. The NASA proposal was removed because funding was secured through other sources of campus funding. Five proposals did not receive nine or more votes. There is $1800 left that can be spent on the remaining proposals. 9. Umoja Report (A. Moore): Postponed for the next Senate meeting. Item #10 has been addressed. Skip to Item #11: District Strategic Plan Update. 11. District Strategic Plan Update (M. Norris): M. Norris just received the District Strategic Plan Update from Mojdeh at the District Office. Will report at a later date. Comments: There was speculation that Glendale Community College was shutting down for Summer and Fall Sessions. M. Norris: Hadnt heard of any colleges closing down but some are consolidating. R. Livingston is not ready to implement a 4% additional cut to the budget. 12. DGC Item (G. Richards): Tabled. 13.Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 4:54 p.m. PAGE PAGE 1 345KUVu, ] " # D E M m r s t 0 [ h!(hIW>*PJh`}hIWPJ hIW>*PJhBhIW>*PJ hIWPJhBhIW5>*PJhBhIWPJhBhIW5PJhBhIW5>*hihIWhBhIW>*hBhIW5>*CJ hBhIWhBhIW5045 " $If $$Ifa$gdIW p^p`gdIW$a$gdIW " # $ ' ( D E s xxrrrr$If $$Ifa$gdIWzkd$$Ifl088(5 t0`9644 las t u x y xxrri $IfgdIW$If $$Ifa$gdIWzkd$$Ifl088(5 t0`9644 la \ xxrri\\ & F$IfgdIW $IfgdIW$If $$Ifa$gdIWzkd$$$Ifl088(5 t0`9644 la[ \ ] ^ F G H I "$CַМззַЁЁwhEhIW>*PJ hNPJh9hIWPJh9hIW5>*PJ h8cPJh0hIW5>*PJh`}hIWPJhIW5>*PJ hIW5PJhNihIWPJ hIWPJhBhIW5>*PJhBhIW5PJhBhIWPJhdrhIW>*PJ-\ ] ^ a b xxrrre & F$IfgdIW$If $$Ifa$gdIWzkd$$Ifl088(5 t0`9644 la !
