Is the old soccer field going to be paved for parking? Change faculty parking spaces to remain faculty parking during all hours. Construction workers leave for lunch and place orange cones in front of their parking spaces so no one can park there. Can gravel be laid down in the far back lot behind lot B for additional parking? District Governance Council (DGC) Discussed the Budget and went through the model. Came up with 18 different budgetary issues. In general, DGC approves a funding model and funding comes from the District office and is disseminated to the campuses based on FTES, but they have to see a final version of the model that addresses the 18 issues that Management was given. DGC should see that final version on or before May 2010. The billing rate for the District Office services will be announced and/or discussed at a large meeting that will be held in March 8th. Management will get back to Michael about splitting up the reserves. Michael asked the Senate to give him some District responsibilities that may be passed down to the campuses due to this new Budget model. The funds should flow directly through the District then split (according to FTES) amongst the three campuses, with the money for District services taken off the top. There should be no funds transferred back and forth. Shared Governance Council (SGC) SGC will continue acting like a Brown Act Body. Looked at committee changes and charges. TLP is still undecided but will continue to be an agenda item. The charge of surveying night safety on campus has been added to the Safety Committee. The students were also concerned about night safety and will start walking at night and identifying safety issues and get a list to Peter. Professional Development Committee, Planning Committee, Safety Committee and IDEA all had charges. Preparing for RAP. General Education Committee (GE) Task Force met on upcoming Global Perspectives seminar. Curriculum Committee Down to 196 COORs. Not all COORs are in but those that are not in have been identified and will be turned in soon. Faculty Senate Coordinating Council (FSCC) Discussed Study Abroad Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Working on various power-saving features for computers, to power down into sleep mode when not in use in order to save energy and money. $18,000 worth of computers was stolen from the Journalism lab. There was no alarm or camera setup to catch the theft. Question: Look into who has master keys and rekeying them? Set-up camera/alarm system. The Brentwood Center now has an established, quicker, working internet connection.4,5Approval of previous minutes Agenda reading and approvalMinutes approved with two corrections: (17-0-0) Second line under Curriculum Committee on the first page still need to be 175 COORs. and replace with submitted. Seminar Data Judy Bank (See Handout) History and Review of Handout Conducting the G.E. Assessment of the SLOs. The first assessment was of the Reading, Writing and Critical Thinking. According to many in the International Reading Association, reading is concept development. The only way students can make meaning of what they are reading in the instructors content is to understand how the concepts are developed. At a workshop in October 2009, the main focus was reading as concept development. The workshop broke into groups according to the disciplines. Each group was asked to come up with what its underlying assumptions for your discipline are and what are the important relationships that they want their students to understand. On the handout, each group is separated and it has been synthesized to show what each group came up with. The basic premises are different, but there are some similarities such as many disciplines want their students to be able to see cause and effect or compare and contrast relationships. The goal is that there be some way that this can be more developed within each discipline to help students to think like good behavioral scientists, mathematicians, etc. All of the different G.E. disciplines acknowledge that there are certain thought patterns which are important for students to see in order to have good comprehension. Suggestions If you are teaching a G.E. course, try to implement a reading strategy or something about reading and look to see if it makes a difference with your students. Another suggestion is to hire someone who has expertise in finding why some students are not doing what they need to in order to fully comprehend the material and be successful in the course. This individual may also be able to utilize this data and help to implement changes based on it. Establish a Flex to see the level of interest in this topic to see if a task force should be developed to proceed with this information.10Ӱɴý Budget Committee (See Handout)Update and Review of Handout Michael discussed with Peter some of what the faculty and Senate relayed to Michael regarding the influence that the Budget Committee will have. Peter responded by saying that there will be a significant amount of influence associated with the Budget Committee, especially in the beginning. On the handout there is a circle flow chart showing that mission, planning, and budget implementation all relate and reflect back to each other. Peter also felt that to have the best decisions, plan, and budget, there really needs to be constituent input. The Budget Committee will report to SGC and the way the budget is directed will have an influence on what SGC is thinking. The Budget Committee will handle more of the broad budget issues such as operating budgets, mix of Management/Faculty and Classified; but departmental budget issues such as toner, supplies, etc. will be left to the departments to figure out. Comments and Suggestions Question: Will the input given by the constituents to Management be used in making decisions? Is it a waste of time and effort to have a Budget Committee if the input will not be utilized? Comment: It needs to be clear and concise from the beginning the role and responsibility of the Budget Committee, so as to make it run smoothly. In order to keep the institution and its process solvent, the decision ultimately is Managements. Comment: When decisions are made, Management and/or the Budget Committee needs to communicate with the individuals involved to get their input beforehand. Communication between Management, Faculty, Classified, and the Budget Committee is key to a successful outcome. Some part of the process must be to encourage true feedback from the community and respond to it.11Enrollment Management for FallUpdate Usually meets the last Thursday of every month. As of now, we are unsure what exact date and time the committee will be meeting due to appointment conflicts. Michael will let the Senate know at the next meeting if he has a definite date. There are now 8 members on the committee and it is extremely important that faculty get their ideas and input to those on the committee so it can be heard at the next meeting. Michael also stated that he would get a list out to the faculty of the Enrollment Management Committee members. The next meeting in February will be crucial for faculty input because discussions will be about how and where to cut, such as the ultimate mission, things that track towards more transfer, things that look at success rates, how many students in the course on the last day of class, etc.12Adjournment "'*4DN^ejv @ ] ^ _ ` ûˣ{sskcShP'.h<5CJOJQJaJh^OJQJh ;OJQJhCHOJQJh&OJQJhYOJQJhg@OJQJhr6aOJQJhtOJQJh[$OJQJhkOJQJhXi OJQJh,POJQJh\(OJQJh0:BOJQJh<OJQJh0:B5OJQJh 5OJQJh<5OJQJh}!5OJQJ"DEN^ ` a p $Ifgd<gd< $@&a$gd< pggg $Ifgd<kd$$IflFL 0*v t0* 44 laytZ{ , - b g !
