Adkins): T. Adkins the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges quarterly newsletter in which she is a member since 1998 with dues. T. Adkins specifically pointed out to an article she shared called, Flipping Mercator: The Long Road to Eliminating Bias and she referred to the Focus Flexed Ӱɴý just had presented by Kimberly Pappillon learning through Neuroscience. T. Adkins explained the concept of the article using the Mercator projection by Suzanne Crawford where social biases are reinforced from an early age in our society: top is better than bottom, size is equivalent to power, and things at the center of an image are more important than those on the fringes. She showed the group a map of the world showing flipped over; turned upside down and thought of implicit bias and asked what would actually do to your brain looking at the map upside down as Suzanne Crawford suggested. T. Adkins also shared the Peters projection map; area accurate map. Unfortunately, many Northern Hemisphere residents whose educational experience has been limited to the Mercator projection and displeased with different appearance of Peters map. Inaccurate projections such as the Mercator map can send conscious or unconscious messages to geography students about the relative importance of countries & their peoples. She asked all to reflect.12.Multiculturalism in Higher Education (T. Adkins) - Continued: T. Adkins shared that after she read the article Mercator projection The Long Road to Eliminating Bias, she changed the way she introduced herself to her students this semester (SP17) than she did in previous semesters by sharing the true facts of herself; 61 year old, 53, Black African American, heterosexual female, married for 38 years (to the same man), two sons and other facts. She explained that she asked her students if anyone has ever introduced themselves to them the way she did and they all answered, no. She told her students that what shes learned on her own is as valuable (if not more so) than anything shes ever learned in any formal education environment in this country. She tells her students that they need to be clear about that because that the lense that she brings in to the space; even if people dont tell you that or if they dont know themselves, that is the lense that they bring in to the room; the perspective that they bring into the space. Thats how they walk to the world and how they take in information and process of what they have experience in the world; to stay mindful of that. T. Adkins shared various quotes from Suzanne Crawford taken from the article and explained that she can read the same book as Silvester or Abbey reads and view it very different; all of us will have a different take from the book. She also referred to the video that Silvester showed and how relevant it is to this topic as well as suggesting to everyone to look up Kimberly Papillons teaching; The Neuroscience of Decision-Making in Higher Education along with the 12 Step Program. J. Townsend shared that Kimberly Papillon will be at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, California on Sunday, February 26, 2017. J. Townsend will forward the information. T. Adkins added the type of training Kimberly Papillon shares with her audience; safe space, micro & macro aggression, trauma base training cellular transfer, intersectionality, genetics and how its passed on. S. Henderson and L. Giambattista explained the purview of the Curriculum Committee on reviewing course outline of records and that the current Ӱɴý chart of responsibilities are one that is designed by our campus (due to time limits of ASC) via suggested guidelines by that state whereas to some other colleges, the Academic Senate also reviews course outline of records. T. Adkins asked, 1) Do you believe that as an institution that weve done all we can to ensure that our curriculum content includes both an accurate, honest Eurocentric and Non-Eurocentric perspective/view of and contributions to the world? and 2) Do you believe that it is important that we do so? And if yes then this discussion is over. She explained that we havent done all that we can. She suggested to have a more balanced curriculum and accurate view of the world. T. Adkins shared 11 Basic Tenets of Good Thinking: Good thinking leads to correct actions that can change your life & will have a tremendous impact on lives of others & you have the responsibility, if you do not believe in the possibilities, you probably should be not teaching. T. Adkins asked S. Henderson to add 5 10 minutes of ASC agenda for others to answer questions she posted today after they have had time to ponder the questions? Also, September is the month that revisions to the disciplines list are to be submitted. Can we add 5-10 minutes to each Academic Senate agenda to discuss changes that may need to be made to this list? Masters in Social Justice Leadership may need to be added to the Disciplines List given the fact that we have a Social Justice AAT/AST. She also suggested to read the article in winter 2017 FACCTS Newsletter about Homeless Students and suggested for others to attend the Diversity in Faculty Hiring Regional Meeting on 2/10/17. S. Henderson will consider to place this item on the agenda for SPRING 2017 for continued conversations as long as time permits in meetings.13.4CD District Plenary April 10, 2017 District Office (S.
