Agenda approved No quorum at the time Minutes approved No quorum at the time Announcements Yamakoshi- At–large senators: Norris should get a letter out asking for nominations this Wednesday. Nursing is rotating there representative through their department members on a meeting-by-meeting basis. Math is sharing their representation between Norris and Yamakoshi, although how is not clear. It’s up to the department. M. Lewis-how does this work with Yamakoshi being president and only voting in case of a tie. Yamakoshi explained that she can vote as part of the math senate representation and then a tie vote if necessary as the president. So far no problematic votes. In new bylaws, V.P. and secretary get to vote if they are senators also. Under new bylaws, nursing could not have more than one proxy. Yamakoshi- Started a list of all the Senate appointed positions. Officers will put out a list of positions that need to be filled. Also do we need any flex workshops? Full time and part time hiring workshop. ĐÓ°É´ŤĂ˝ did not have one this Fall. Yamakoshi- Token of thanks is November 8th. Yamakoshi- FSCC forms wants to discuss them. Doesn’t quite follow current policy in terms of who signs for what. Please send feedback to Yamakoshi. Yamakoshi- Matriculation report from last year on how spent money. Cal Works is future budget. Yamakoshi- Management evaluation list. Garcia said this is coming soon. Lewis-After the poll results, the documents will be updated to include four-year term limits for the President and Vice President position (the options with the most votes). Unless the Senate wants to wait to change things to make it possible for Nursing to have the rotation it currently uses, Norris will send out the documents to be voted on. Term limits were consecutive. The only thing changed from previous version is the term limits. E. Lewis: what about the nursing issue? Kaiper- rotation defeats the idea of having consistency, practice, and a sense of the flow of ongoing conversations. New people come in without context. If everybody were to adopt that process, we would in affect be back to the senate of the whole. Yamakoshi- if everyone goes back to their constituents and gets their opinion, then theoretically all of us could be a rep. Reps vote for their department anyway. Austin- it would open the door to confusion. It should not be put in the bylaws in general. Stewart- Nurses are out in the field, so it is difficult to get a rep in every single Monday. It is different than it used to be for nurse reps, so lets make an exception for nursing after the bylaws are passed. E. Lewis- keep bylaws as is, then make exceptions as we go. Yamakoshi- No one is able to attend the ASCCC meeting as of yet. Senators should go back to their constituents to try to find someone. October 15th is the deadline to get reduced rate. Reports: 1. SGC-Frates and Austin- No meeting 2. Curriculum Committee (McGregor). There are several changes happening in the curriculum committee. They are trying to get the easiest possible forms to be filled out online. These will be required starting in the Sp 05 semester. However, you can still complete the forms in writing if you want to. Drop down menus will replace the old check boxes. The online versions are being beta tested now. Included will be help features, definitions, formats model courses outlines and instructions. The old form should still be used for now. The online forms will be connected to the ĐÓ°É´ŤĂ˝ web site. We are still a couple of years away from electronic submission and progress following. Action Items/Discussion Items: Instructional Program Approval Process –Henry brought in definitions of programs. State in “program and course approval handbook” even has difficulty drawing a clear line whether something is a program or just a new option. A program is anything that gets a degree or certificate or makes a substantial modification or major new options. Confirm 18-unit nature of program. A new engineering program clearly would be a new one. A new computer option might not be. M. Lewis wanted the word “Senate” added in a few places. Austin- what about bringing back Drama program. Henry-Even if state does not require approval of an already approved program, local approval of resurrected program can use the state one process. Norris- So Senate wants Lewis’ suggestions of inserting “Senate” and the other paragraph Lewis rewrote, a specific reference to the state program and course approval handbook, and a catch-all clause dealing with dormant programs that are being “resurrected” and new program options should go through a similar local process even if not required by the state. At some point we will attach a parallel program cancellation process. Henry will incorporate these suggestions and take it to CC and AS. Student Code of Conduct-Corlew. More than just “don’t do it”. Lays out what student’s and faculty rights and obligations. Should go in your first day handout(FDH). Gives instructors freedom if they announce it ahead of time. Falls in line with sister colleges. Sample-Appeal can only happen after a final grade, not during the semester. McNair- Can’t appeal a specific assignment to appeals group. M. Lewis-What if student won’t sign or come to see instructor? Corlew-just informing student in writing on the assignment is sufficient. The instructor has options. He/she can send it forward to the Dean for just recording or for further action. We won’t tolerate plagiarism is a serious first message. M. Lewis- will formalizing the process discourage instructors for approaching students about cheating? Corlew- No because not required to do anything so long as you are consistent and fair. Corlew will come up with text with Livingston’s help to attach to FDH. Mc Nair- we will be consistent across the District. Austin- English has been doing this for three years. M. Lewis- Are instructors going to be reversed by the Deans frequently? Livingston- punishment to fit the crime, got to have documentation of evidence for grade grievance committee. Norris- senators should go back to constituents to get any final changes. Raising Math and English degree requirements- Norris. English not a concern because they already have English 1A. Passed out a compressed version of 45 page talking paper. Several years of work and resolutions. Questions about what employers need, what an educated person is, what about those who go on to transfer. Also questions about student goals taking longer and can we support a change. State says “to use mathematics”. High school and Community college requirements the same. Do you need Algebra II from a practical standpoint or is it just the learning and critical thinking that is important? Algebra is taught in depth, sophistication and difficulty, like other subjects. Employers need computation and knowing how to learn. Options are to leave it alone, change it so that Algebra II or any class with Algebra I as a prerequisite, Algebra II itself, or college level math. Assume second option: algebra II level but not content necessarily. Austin- is high school algebra II and college algebra II the same? Some people say they are the same, some say that the depth in college is different. Nobody used to take college level math to get a degree and she never used it since high school. Fracisco- what about courses as prerequisites for the transfer courses. Also making Algebra II a prerequisite for biology and other courses at CSU. Livingston- would considerably better critical thinking skills come out of an Algebra II class compared to the current class? Yamakoshi- state split in two, north versus south somewhat.
