Announcements Yamakoshi addressed a handout given out at the District meeting during the week of April 11, 2005 regarding the compressed calendar issue. In this handout Dan Henry is quoted stating that ”ĐÓ°É´ŤĂ˝ has not considered and has no immediate plans to consider going to a compressed calendar, but our District has considered investigating a compressed calendar”. Majority of the Senate had concerns that changing to this compressed calendar will impact our classes further and that this will put a shortage on classrooms space. The District has scheduled a meeting for additional discussion on May 23, 2005. Approval of Minutes and Consent Agenda Corrected minutes from February 28, 2005. Norris will send out ballots and requests a deadline of April 29, 2005; CC offices: Senate Secretary still needed; 2 part-time faculty representatives still needed; Curriculum committee for Liberal Arts? Planning Committee position has been filled; Curriculum Development Compensation Committee positions still available; Ed Master Plan Goals position has been filled; Hiring Committee position still available for paper screening committee for the Dean of Brentwood Center and Special Programs. Priorities for the Senate Budget-Norris advised that he briefly spoke to Richard about the idea of paying for a class that might be canceled for low enrollment. Richard replied that he does not believe that there are very many classes that are canceled at nineteen students, however, he does believe that it is possible to pay an instructor to teach either a summer class or an extra class. Purchasing of extra books to keep in LRC 2 was discussed and majority of Senate agreed. We had a couple of suggestions on how to handle the purchasing of the books. We could either; allocate the money now that allows for each department to purchase 2 books, or we could donate the money to the Student Senate, with the understanding that we intended for this donation to go toward books for student to use in LRC 2. Yamakoshi requested that we discuss this with our department members. We will address this issue more in a future meeting. Norris advised that we are still looking for a student secretary. Norris will post a job posting with the Employment Center. Norris advised that the Retirement Reception Committee requested $500 donation, some to be supplied from the Senate Budget, some from the Presidents office and some from other donations. Majority of Senate believed that the donation should not come from the Senate’s Budget. It was suggested that the Presidents office should pay the full $500.00. Davi moves, Baskin 2nds, to have the $500.00 donation to the Retirement Reception Committee be paid by the Presidents office. Motion passes 9-1-1 (Lewis against) (McGrath abstains) Stipends for Academic Senate- (Yamakoshi). Yamakoshi advised that stipends are supposed to be equal for all of senate, however, should a discrepancy between the amount that your supposed to be paid and the amount that you are paid, please bring the issue forward so that we can discuss and resolve it, so that there isn’t any conflict between senate members. Approve form for the Curriculum Committee Self Assessment-Action (Kamath)- Yamakoshi advised Kamath will give report on May 16, 2005 Early Assessment Program (Yamakoshi). Yamakoshi advised that high school students take a Star test and the EAP (Early Assessment Test) in Math and English. She will work with our English and Math departments to see if we can agree to accept the EAP for our students. The California State Universities already accept the EAP so ĐÓ°É´ŤĂ˝ should as well. There was some concern that the test is given the junior year of high school and that there will be a full year before they start college. If the student has the letter stating they meet the required freshman level, they will not have to take the assessment test with us. Reports: 1. TAG-(Lewis) No Report SGC-(Baskin) Baskin advised looking at revising the goals for the Ed Master Plan, however, there will be some ongoing discussions. Monday meeting calendar is out and senate should get a copy soon. SGC meeting are every other week. Baskin advised that she received a report showing what SGC has done so far this year. Curriculum Committee. (Kamath)- No Report College and Senate President report –Work to contract issues for Senate- Discussion (Yamakoshi). Yamakoshi advised that she relayed the following question to President Garcia: Given that Dean replacements in the office of instruction should save funds, when will ĐÓ°É´ŤĂ˝ hire more classified staff, especially since we know that ĐÓ°É´ŤĂ˝ is losing classified staff in the areas such as the business office, the office of instruction and IT, which are due to retirement? Presidents Garcia’s response was “I don’t have an answer to when we will be allowed to hire additional classified staff. Intern-chancellor Callahan has allowed the Dean searches to be made, but she hasn’t committed to a hiring date”.
