Livingston: Thanks to the Senate for its excellent work. Thanks to Michael Norris for his leadership. As of now, there is no Academic Senate president candidate for 2011-2012, and Richard would like to encourage communication with colleagues to get someone on board. 3. Agenda Reading and Approval (M. Norris): Item #10 (1440 Degrees): Remove Math and add Sociology/Psychology The agenda was approved with changes. Richards for Counseling, C. Ralston for Liberal Arts and T. Adkins for CTE/Occ. Ed rep. Curriculum Committee Reps = K. Gardner for Liberal Arts, L. Johnson for Dist. Ed (for the first half) & L. Huffman (for the last half), M. Stricker for Brentwood. Anthony Hailey will be the Curriculum Committee Chair for the Spring 2011 semester.  7. AA Degree Requirements (M. Norris): Philosophy (discussion): Do we agree with the old GE Criteria (previous handout)? Do we want to adhere to the 8 Criteria? Is it dated, is it still relevant? F & G (of the criteria) were combined. In 1994, 8 were compressed to 5 Criteria. Will Ӱɴý graduates be representative of students who have a General Education? Historical GE Meetings: Each course was to provide parts of the whole (the criteria). Math rep (E. Holtmann): Provided a handout with a sample GE Pattern illustrating the creation of boxes and a way to reduce the breadth of GE outcomes incorporated into courses so that courses could do the following: go more deeply into their discipline and GE outcomes; assess fewer GE outcomes; and meeting all five GE outcomes by the time students finish their GE requirements. Currently, Ӱɴý has an integrated GE model. Math and English are competency courses and would be pulled out and the other GE courses would span the breadth of the GE Criteria. In reference to the GE sample, a possible solution could be 3 GE SLOs instead of 5. For those who want to align closer to Title 5, the integrated GE model helps. The Ӱɴý GE Criteria doesnt allow removing much, in terms of classes because certain requirements are in Title 5, but the Senate could add to it. Concern: Ӱɴý defines GE different than the State, CSUs and Universities. There was an expressed interest by some Senators to revert the discussion back to the foundation of General Education and whether the Senate wanted the 5 Criteria to begin with, which would then be followed by discussion of proposals or samples. Next Agenda: Discuss whether the Senate wants to stick with the 5 Criteria or not. Discuss inviting the GE Committee or having a joint meeting to get the foundation to base corresponding work upon. Senators were asked to get feedback from their departments. E. Holtmann requested that the next meeting discuss splitting Critical and Creative Thinking (3a & 3b). Motion (R. Aliotti): Motion to agendize the first AA Degree Requirements Discussion for the Fall semester to address GE Criteria with the possibility of changing it or aligning to Title 5 or CSUs/UCs. Second: (P. Perfumo): Vote: 13 0 3 (E. Holtmann, J. Meyer and S. Toruo-Conley). The vote passes. *J. Townsend recommended that the Senate look at what other colleges have in their GE Criteria for guidance.  8. Umoja Report (A. Moore): Tabled.  9. Reassign Time Assignment Procedure (J. VonBergen, B. Austin & R. Livingston): B. Austin provided a handout on Reassigned Time: Procedures for Establishing and Monitoring ALL Non-Contractual Reassigned Time Provided by the College regardless of Funding Source. Concerns: A need for faculty input, no acknowledgement of creative hours, process of appointment and release time. Relative to other colleges, Ӱɴý is low in management resulting in more faculty requested to take on traditional managerial work. Faculty Suggestions: Look retroactively at positions, look at hiring, lack of faculty input might be resolved by including SGC since there is faculty representation at that committee, or include groups like TLP. R. Livingston: Context (2-3 years): Reassign time is not just about money but also about being stewards. Management would be happy to try and modify the process taking into special consideration of the concerns: reduce or better accountability measures; fix terms, clear lines; and friendly amendments/suggestions. If the Senate has specific language changes, sent to Michael Norris and he will forward it to the appropriate personnel. Please submit suggestions by August.  10. 1440 Degree - Soc/Psych and Child Development (A. Sample & J. Townsend): Child Development (J. Townsend): AS-T in Child Development and Education. Question: Unit count on #3 (Program Requirements) Comment: The labor market was very narrow. It could have included jobs in Speech Pathology or other fields. 9 units of the Child Development coursework and CSU GE-Breadth Requirements double-count. Motion (M. Lewis): Motion to approve the Child Development and Education AS-T degree. Second (R. Aliotti): Vote: 16 0 1 (C. McGrath) Psychology & Sociology (A. Sample) : AS-T in Psychology and AS-T in Sociology Intro to Research on the last page needs to be changed from 4 units to 3 units. The Sociology degree is an AA-T and not an AS-T. It will be corrected in the amended documents. Units double-counted on the last page needs to indicate 17 units. Background and Rationale: There must be a reason for changing it if the old degree is not being kept. List C: Need to include the Assist background.
