When I started teaching, I was unquestionably an irregular freeway flyer. As most of you know, a Freeway Flyer is the nickname given to adjuncts who work on multiple campuses and fly up and down Americas freeways to make ends meet. The adjective irregular is apropos here because I was not journeying to multiple campuses, though I spent large chunks of my day on the freeway. As well as working on finishing my PhD at Goldsmiths in London, I was living in Modesto when I started working as an adjunct at Diablo Valley Community College, and tragically, at the time, I didnt own a car. This meant that every month I had to pay $175 in order to ride the Modesto BART EXPRESS, a bus for commuters traveling to Dublin/Pleasantons BART station. Most weekdays, Id board the Modesto BART EXPRESS outside Orchard Hardware Supply on Sisk Road at 4:45 AM. Boarding the bus was reminiscent of the This seat is taken scenes in Robert Zemeckis Forrest Gump, except people wouldnt verbally say This seat is taken but would implicitly do it by piling up the seats next to them with designer bags, topcoats, and satchels. Eventually, like Forrest, I would find a seat, and if no knees were pressed into the back of my chair, I would try to get some sleep before the Modesto BART EXPRESS completed its ninety-minute journey to Dublin/Pleasanton Bart Station. It would take me another hour and sixteen minutes to travel to Pleasant Hill BART Station and another 23 minutes on the 316 bus to reach my destination: Diablo Valley College on Golf Club Road. Ultimately, via public transport, it would take me over three hours to arrive to work. Sharing this experience is not my way of situating myself as a community college instructor willing to make any sacrifice for the betterment of his students. Rather, this experience my earliest experience teaching at the community college level simply put, speaks to my willingness to persevere, a willingness that many of us in this room share. From my early experience as a college instructor, I quickly learned that my experience was not unique, as there were many adjunct faculty members who made comparable journeys solely for their names to appear next to a section number in a course catalogue. There were also many adjuncts who were working on their dissertations and other qualifications - anything to help them stand out. I wanted to teach, so I so we - made it work. For me, it was too dark when I boarded the EXPRESS, but once I had some light, Id use my commuting hours to lesson plan, leave comments in the margins of student essays, respond to emails, outline, write, and rewrite PhD chapters. I made my six-hour commute work for me. From the outset of my teaching career, I had to learn how to persevere. Perseverance is one of the primary reasons why I believe that Im qualified and prepared to take on the role as Academic Senate President. I understand that representing faculty in all 10 + 1 academic and professional matters will be rewarding but also a challenging experience. The role requires individuals to willingly deal with various obstacles. If elected, I vow to persist through inevitable challenges that accompany this role, and I will work towards resolutions that best represent my colleagues. My ability to work through challenges is an aspect of my character that I value because it has helped me since my years as an adjunct to the present day, and it will be of paramount importance to me if I occupy this leadership in the senate. Along with my persistence, I also believe that Im prepared to take on the role of Academic Senate President for several other reasons. Among them, I possess a significant amount of experience in the Senate, Ive had the opportunity to lead and collaborate, and I am devoted to student-centered learning.6.Academic Senate President Election Candidacy Presentation Dr. James Noel (M.A. Kaufman): My experience serving as Academic Senator or alternate Senator for seven years has provided me with a sound understanding of the Senates function at Ӱɴý. From my time in the senate, I learned how imperative it is for all faculty to receive adequate representation on all 10+1 academic and professional affairs, and Ive always deemed this representation as important. Moreover, my service as a senator for my department for numerous years is a testament to how seriously the shared governance of the academic senate is to me. Now, I, like many candidates who have come forward in the past (not today, though), would like to ensure that the facultys needs in matters such as professional development, curriculum, and educational program development, and institutional planning and budget development are being met. This is especially important with accreditation around the corner, legislative changes being imposed upon us, and our implementation of educational initiatives such as Guided Pathways. I would like the opportunity to lead. The opportunities that Ive had to lead on campus have also prepared me for this role. In my current role as the English departments composition coordinator, understanding and meeting faculty needs are an important part of the position, and I think that through myorganization of professional development activities and willingness to work collaboratively I have demonstrated this commitment. For example, as a result of the recent legislative changes stemming from AB 705, many of my colleagues have called have for more professional development activities to help them improve their instructional strategies. The workshops, teaching community, and teaching teams that Ive led dealt directly have met that call. The skills Ive developed in this role, and others, will be useful if elected. Nonetheless, perhaps the most important quality that I possess that qualifies me to this role is my commitment to students. Our jobs, our curriculum, professional development, this campus would really be nothing if there were no students present. Thus, I work diligently to ensure that the instructional strategies that I employ in the classroom are student-centered, and if elected, I intend to bring this focus to this important and impactful position. This goes hand in hand with my commitment to fostering equitable practices both inside and outside of the classroom, a commitment that aligns with many of the recent initiatives that have been implemented at the state level. Before closing, Id like to thank the current leadership of the Senate for all of their efforts, and if elected, it is my hope to build on their diligent work to ensure that the senate effectively and efficiently preserves our voices in this institution and district. I am grateful for your time and consideration. Questions and Answer Time: Q: We havent put forth any statewide resolutions from Ӱɴý for many, many years, do you have any resolutions that you think should come from Ӱɴý or do you have any thoughts around that. Other resolutions before were AB705 or amendments or resolutions for Plenary. A: Ill have to get back to you on that. Q: As Academic Senate President, what kind of goals would you like to set for the group as you move forward? A: Id like to ensure that we continue to work efficiently and effectively. It can be very difficult, given our climate of finding resolutions is one of my main goals. Also, equitable practices, ensuring that not only we are compliant with AB705 but were also effectively teaching our students as well. I think those two things are my primary concerns. 7.Nexus Group (M.A. Kaufman): M.A. Kaufman presented Nexus group during this time; all introduced themselves at the beginning of the meeting.
