Lewis shared the ISLO Statement focusing on Communication Competency, Critical Thinking and Information Competency, Digital Fluency, Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Reasoning, Ethical Insight and Diverse Perspective, and Personal, Academic and Career Development. Digital Fluency options were read out; 1) Apply technology competency skills to navigate the college systems, including the use of appropriate digital tools to successfully achieve academic and career goals, OR 2) Apply technology competency skills to successfully achieve academic and career goals. College Administration: None on this agenda. Committee Update: 1) CC M. Lynn thanked all involved for their hard work in transitioning to eLumen and tech review for FA21. Approved several new courses including Islamic Art course, Broadway Musical, a lot of program revisions based on program audit from last winter (thank you to faculty and counselors), and began discussion on cross listing procedure, finalize next meeting and then bring forth to senate. 2) LPG J. Von Bergen: shared Flex announcement should be coming via PDAC soon; they are understaffed. PDAC is working with TLC on focus flex to bring in guest speaker to talk about PSLO Assessment scheduled for the 20th and still in discussion if its via Zoom or face-to-face. - It was asked if SP22 opening will be on Zoom or in person; same answer still in discussion if its via Zoom or face to face. 3) GE A. Also in discussion classes online versus in person education. 6.Special Item: (M. Lewis) Academic Senate Discussion: Per 4CD Governing Board, all colleges will continue to meet via Zoom without voting every month until new order.7.Consent Calendar: (M. Lewis) Academic Senate to vote for 1 faculty member for Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) committee: Janith Norman or Nicole Trager. - Current SEM faculty members are Milton Clarke, Sara Toruno-Conley and Camille Santana. - It was suggested for senate to reexamine and discuss SEM charges, purview and areas of representation as faculty members similar to SGC. SEM is in its second year and defining constituents faculty representations are important. Senate will examine and discuss this in SP22. - Nicole Trager won majority of senate votes to represent in SEM committee. Congratulations to Nicole Trager.8.Second Reading (M. Lewis): None on this agenda. 9.First Reading: (M. Lewis): Online vs. In-Person Scheduling and District Budget M. Lewis asked what kind of college Ӱɴý is going to be? Are we going to be online, in person college or 50/50? This is a conversation taking place within the district, state and possibly across the country. M. Lewis shared info on student survey done across the district with 1,400 student responses. Responses received, more than half of students preferred to finish their education fully online and the rest is hybrid/in-person. Were down enrollment by 15-20%, however we are still in hold-harmless situation. First Reading: (M. Lewis): Online vs. In Person Scheduling and District Budget the district and management are discussing funding after two years hold-harmless, online classes filling up faster than in person and how much back in person are we going to be? M. Lewis asked senate for their opinion on this matter. - Discussion: We need to clarify vaccine requirements, set-up vaccination stations, teach students the science behind vaccines, compare demographics campus wide and county, having a little bit of both (online and in person) is also important; the accountability factor in person is what makes student successful, think carefully of options we offer, we have to do labs in person, offer hybrid science classes, students are learning to be flexible on hybrid, with work, school and home life, however difficult to transition fully in person to university life and might not be the best to be fully online, its important to make our decisions with consideration of whats happening around us, high schools are fully in person, UCs and CSUs are in person. Its important to do students surveys, and we need to do what is best for them, honors course fills up and students do come. We create events and students do come (38 students for symphony and 100 students came for Halloween event) and if we have robust offering online classes and theater, music/choir production experiences and courses throughout, students will come. We have successful classes fully online, quality is important and each one of us should commit to doing the best we can, no matter what the modality is. A question of the modality affects the number of courses; it shouldnt have to be either/or. Factors of going back; cautious coming back, family obligation keeps them home. Monday (Nov 15th) college assembly, will present spring schedule; administration wants to hear from faculty. - M. Lewis shared COVID data, scenarios, and summarized folks would like more in person, make campus feel like real campus, put social back in peoples lives and look at which courses to teach online would benefit more. At what point do we reopen the world, COVID is never going away. Suggestion: Do cohort scheduling, strategically scheduling 12-14 unit course pairings, block schedules scaling up like learning communities, start scheduling packages for high school seniors, consider students with transportation problems, see this as an opportunity to evolve, for senate to consult their departments for feedback, consensus and bring back to the senate, to approach hi-flex courses (online and in person) for students who cannot come in, consider student technology limitations, whats going to give a good education to students, what format and pragmatically balance out financial aspect of not cutting faculty salaries and not cutting benefits, and look what CVC offers online; this is our chance to evolve. Program Approval Process M. Lewis shared our two-year program review process and asked to find possible way to streamline the process. - M. Lynn asked shared the importance to, 1) for senate to revisit this document with CC on a regular basis, 2) for clarity, if changes are relevant. M. Lynn asked if faculty are clear when courses involved in a new program come to CC. - Suggestions: For senate to form a taskforce especially from those who have recently submitted new program proposals, for CC to expand its role, get more involved other than Phase II model, participate in dialogues, and ASC/CC to put together a robust process that encourages a lot of dialogue across the institution to support longevity and sustainability of programs across the institution. To develop a survey of challenges, clarity of understanding, send surveys who has gone through the process in the last couple of years, and for CC to use the information and known state regulations to create a policy, and bring to senate for review. For the taskforce to be compensated for their time via GP or ASC. c) Richard Livingston Resolution Senate Collaboration M. Lewis shared K. Crowders idea of honoring Richard Livingston and asked for feedback. - J. Saito and C. McGraths idea is to create an award in Richard Livingstons name. R. Livingston is known for being the heart and soul of Ӱɴý. To be awarded to one employee with criteria: 1) nominated by anyone/student, 2) exemplary work around student(s), 3) campus committee, Ideas: The Richard Livingston Ӱɴý Heart & Soul Award, perhaps for R. Livingston to get the first award and a task force will work on criteria. - Motion to waive first read and into second read Approved (M/S; K. Crowder/A. Sample), Unanimous, 14 Votes - Motion to approve the Annual Richard Livingston Students Come First Award Approved (M/S; J. Saito/K. Crowder), Unanimous, 13 Votes10.Informational Items: (M. Lewis): Ӱɴý Pathways and Scale of Adoption Assessment Report (SOAA): (N. Hannum for S. Montemayor Lenz) - N. Hannum shared GP history, previous meeting presentations on SOAA updates, and timelines. S. Montemayor Lenz (via N. Hannum) is requesting senate feedback emailed to her no later than November 22, 2021. Also presented to senate were the updated 5 pillar areas chart, currently going to SEM group as an action item while Certificate of Achievements will show on second document. Next step is how we step up and work with our learning major career success teams. - Comments from senate: Theres no biological representation in STEM, the iconography of Caduceus is not an icon for health; it represents mythology, the God of commerce that belongs in Business, Manufacturing and Transport. The representation for health is one snake around a wooden staff (M. Lewis will send logo explanation to N. Hannum and S. Montemayor Lenz for iconography change). N. Hannum encouraged all to look at the 5 pillar chart, SOAA again, and provide collectively last minute feedback to capture all voices and highlight best practices.11.Upcoming Items: (M.
