Lewis): Academic Senate President: M. Lewis reminded all about meeting in person starting March 1st. At March 13th meeting we will be in person. Feb 13th (today) and Feb 27th can still be hybrid. This applies for Brown Act groups. Voting members of Senate will have to meet in person either at Ӱɴý Pittsburg or Ӱɴý Brentwood locations. M. Lewis sent an email requesting for Senate Reps to email him and Abbey to confirm attending in person for SP23. Exceptions to AB-2449: 1) Voting members can attend meetings online twice per calendar year (Jan-Dec), 2) emergency situations has to be reported to Senate Council as early as possible, 3) the Senate body has to approve all exceptions, 4) anyone online present that is over 18 years or older has to be disclosed to the group, 5) remote meeting address locations does not need to be published, 6) Folks who are not members of the Senate can continue to attend remotely, 7) Zoom will be available for public (non-voting) access after Mar 1st, and 8) if Senate Alternate Rep is attending in place of its Senator, Alternate Rep has to attend in person. Joint Senate meeting is on Monday, March 20th in L-109. Academic, Classified and Student Senates will meet in one room. M. Lewis is asking for volunteers from the group to do a 10-minute presentation; what has been working for them and equity focus subject. M. Lewis shared all open positions listed on the agenda. LPG, GE, SEM, Study Abroad, Planning, DGC Brentwood Rep, and Graduation. College Administration: N. Hannum shared that Congressman Mark Desaulnier is out in Brentwood Center today along with Edward Haven, other faculty members, and ӰɴýAS. Desaulnier has been a huge supporter of OER. Hes having a session with students for their thoughts and opinions on OER. 5.Communications and Questions: b) - N. Hannum has reached out to several faculty members to continue their current roles. We are rethinking reassigned time associated with Guided Pathways with District guidance and what other colleges are doing; to provide OAS hours for faculty across their areas. c) Committee Chairs/Committee Members: - SGC Spent a lot of time discussing Brown Act meeting in person starting March 1st. A lot of questions came up during discussion; who is Brown Act, do we have to publish address location, etc. P. Ralston will be reaching out to the District to create written communication to send out to all employees regarding Brown Act meeting protocols. A task force was created to keep track of meeting exceptions of employee attendance online and an email will go out regarding this. - Planning M. Lewis shared our new Dean of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, Ryan Pedersen. Discussed which aspect of Planning and college goals were going to focus on for this semester. Looking at program review, equity, and standardize or better ways to assess. - GE Working on issues around local GE, English classes, and Science classes. We have some ideas based on restrictions to notify the college when someone has signed up, maybe moving some out of category. Were also waiting for data from Ryan Pedersen to find out if its really an issue or not on enrollment. Senate is looking for data on this for further consideration. 6.Consent Calendar: Motion to approve Caitlin Mitchell for District-wide Sabbatical Leave Approve (M/S; J. Townsend/A. Sterling) Unanimous, 13 Votes7.Special Item: a) A call went out for Ӱɴý President Hiring Committee, 5 faculty members (Dr. Janith Norman, Dr. Candice Crenshaw-Mayo, Maria Magante, Briana McCarthy, and Jennifer Saito) volunteered. The Senate conducted voting ballot to choose 3 faculty; below names were voted in. Dr. Janith Norman, 2) Briana McCarthy, and 3) Jennifer Saito M. Lewis will forward all three names to the Chancellors office. The three chosen will represent Ӱɴý Senate during the proceedings. There are still 2 faculty reps needed, perhaps the District will forward both names also, Dr. C. Crenshaw-Mayo and Professor M. Magante.8.Second Reading (M. Lewis): Reactivate Liberal Arts Degree Task Force and to Update Charges: M. Lewis shared purpose of task force established in 2018 and shared its report and recommendation. General degrees do not belong to certain areas; no one is assessing them, no one is in charge, and no one is in charge of structure or developments. Recommendation of the task force was to place someone in charge to take care of the issues, streamline, monitor properly, and modify to better serve our students. M. Lewis ask the group if the Senate would like to act on the task force recommendation from 4 years ago as no one has acted upon this recommendation. It was suggested to have the new task force to do an alignment with Guided Pathways and what course needs to be added. Perhaps there could be some funding for OAS for the task force. N. Hannum will bring the new funding model back to Senate soon. N. Hannum asked, does it make sense to combine the CalGETC discussion and to do a CalGETC workshop and how will that impact our Liberal Arts degrees altogether? It was recommended for GE committee to take a look at CalGETC, GE Chair could be part of this task force, consider information on funding model, whos going to assess these courses, solutions to short and long-term questions, and provide OAS hours. Motion to reconstitute Liberal Arts degree task force to make recommendations for alignment with guided pathways, assessment, and course mix and funding. Approved (M/S; J. Clark/J. Townsend) 13 Yes, 0 Opposed, & 1 Abstain Anyone interested to be on the task force, please email M. Lewis. 9.Special Item: ӰɴýAS Student Senate Report (J. Bui) None to report.10.First Reading: (M. Lewis): New Senate Representation Ethnic Studies and Social Justice: A. Simone read the recommendation and proposal for Senate representation. Recommendation: Senate Representation for Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies Action: The Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies Department requests that Academic Senate add a senator position for a representative from the Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies Department Justification: The Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies Department exists today due to the committed support of this faculty body, which contributed greatly to the development of these programs in recent years. The faculty have shown their commitment to anti-racist practices by calling on management to support a strong and independent department, a department which is rapidly growing with courses in high demand and a new full-time hire set to join us this fall. Although we reside in a state where disciplines such as Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, and LGBTQ+ Studies are beginning to be supported, there are many other places in the United States where, not only is this important curriculum being banned, but people are being put in physical danger. These communities are under constant threat from efforts to strip basic human rights such as critical medical care for women and trans youth. Texas and Florida are actively legislating our curriculum out of existence. Meanwhile, the ACLU is currently tracking 278 anti-LGBTQ bills in 33 states slated for the 2023 legislative session. The safety of our communities and our programs is far from guaranteed. This is why it is more important than ever to empower them. Anti-racism practice requires more than speaking pledges. It is actively creating policies and practices which empower these programs and our diverse student body who needs them. We ask for institutional recognition while simultaneously being critical of educational systems to hold academia accountable. Our fields of study have fought for decades to be academically institutionalized with a robust history rooted in the Bay Area. At San Francisco State University, the Black Student Union demanded that the institution create a Black Studies Department, which would lead to the first Ethnic Studies Departments. In our Ӱɴý Senate Anti-Racism Resolution, our faculty has committed to to develop, create, promote and implement anti-racist policies and actions that benefit our campus community. So, I ask the senate now to support the representation and self-determination of Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies with an independent representative to the Academic Senate. Ӱɴý has shown that it values Ethnic Studies and diverse perspectives with its local GE requirement: GE SLO 4 Diverse Perspectives. Moreover, with the CSU Area F requirement and the eventual CalGETC pattern, it would behoove Academic Senate to have faculty represented from Ethnic Studies within its larger governing body. As our Anti-Racism Resolution states, senators have the opportunity now to honor our commitment to participate in the constant struggle for racial justice which has energized us to make an intentional commitment for real change. It was noted the current representation needs a replacement for Political Science/ADJUS area; A. Simone to move to Ethnic/Social Justice. It was suggested to assess current areas of representation in Senate seats; if bigger programs would want their own representatives? M. Lewis can place it on the agenda for future discussion should Senate choose to do that. This item is in its own proposal and voting rights. It was clarified, the proposal is for Ethnic and Social Justice Department to have its own Senate seat effective immediately upon voted in. Motion to waive first read and into second read for an approval Approve (M/S; J. Von Bergen/J. Clark) 12 Yes, 0 Opposed & 1 Abstain Motion to add Ethnic Studies and Social Justice as its own Senate representation Approve (M/S; J. Saito/S. Steers) Unanimous, 13 Votes M. Lewis stated we will make the modifications in the Bylaws and will reach out to Political Science and ADJUS to choose their area rep. 10.First Reading: (M. Lewis): District Level AB-928 Resolution: The District Board will be voting on a resolution about AB-928 this Wednesday. M. Lewis asked for feedback. The resolution is to reinstate life-long learning CSU and UC graduation requirements and will dramatically impact our enrollment. Classes will especially impact our Counseling classes, Health Science, Nutrition, and possibly Kinesiology. Graduation number of units will be affected. Senate Feedback: a) It would be great if students had the option to take it at a community college or a CSU, b) the proposal from the State more streamlined, less units for transfer students. STEM students already have STEM GETC to get out faster, one of our largest pathways is our STEM pathway, c) it is not better for other majors or lifelong learning, d) it is easier for students to transfer, e) 10+1 issue, f) why is it a bad thing to give students a choice in their pathway. M. Clarke mentioned, the Community College League of Californias website has a list of reasons why they opposed to AB-928; it requires community college students to be automatically enrolled in an ADT program, theres a concern over representation of community colleges on committee that designate what courses would be eligible or not, theres issues about articulating courses, and there wasnt any resources or money being supplied to do this process. The issues go beyond just the number of units. M. Clarke supports M. Lewis going to the meeting and suggested to do more research on the bill. The reasons of streamlining courses are the least of the reasons. M. Lewis said the Board has never done this before about academic and professional issues; creating a resolution before Senates support. M. Lewis will report back to Senate the Board did and what it actually meant. He noted that it is of a concern for the Board to do the resolution prior to obtaining Senates support and feedback. 11.Discussions: (M. Lewis): ChatGPT Issues Faculty at DVC asked ChatGPT what to do about ChatGPT? His question, how do we prevent student cheating using ChatGPT? You are correct that ChatGPT and other language models may not be caught by plagiarism detection software as they do not produce text that is identical to any existing source. However, there are still several strategies that a Professor could use to prevent students from using ChatGPT or other language models. 1) Require students to submit a rough draft. By requiring students to submit a rough draft after their proposal, Professor can provide feedback and ensure that the final proposal that the students only worked on. This can help to identify they have been produced without the assistance of chat. 2) Instead of relying solely on a written proposal, the Professor could use a combination of assessment methods, such as oral presentations or group work to ensure that students are demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of the topic. 3) Monitor the use of technology. The Professor could monitor the use of technology, such as ChatGPT or other AI-based writing tools to ensure that students are not using them to cheat on the side. This could include requiring students to submit a record of their work process for restricting access to certain technologies to encourage academic honesty. The Professor could remind students of the importance of academic honesty, and the consequences by saying expectation and promoting culture of academic integrity. The Professor can discourage students from using ChatGPT or other language models to cheat on the side. Discussions about scenarios in classrooms took place, how UC Santa Cruz did not give out grades, however their students had issues when transferring, giving evaluations instead of grading system, and math students scenarios were also discussed. Problems with visual schedule builder/Establishing active Ӱɴý/District Technology Groups: It was shared the schedule builder is too complex for students to use that its costing us enrollment. M. Lewis asked how we got the software, we do not have a real functioning governance technology group that reports out to us before purchasing and implementation and that is something that really needs to change; said FSCC. 11.Discussions: (M. Lewis) b) Discussions a) It seems the algorithm is written to fill classes capacity and then it exports to the less filled classes, b) the buttons are hard to see, c) sometimes you have to physically give it a section #; you will have to know the section # to find it, d) specific feedback or issues should be reported to Dave Belman and Tanisha Maxwell (cc Natalie Hannum) who are the collectors of information for issues and who are in communication with Kelly Shalene and Satish, e) have a way for students to see courses pdf or paper form, f) we should be able to just type in the course # and see all the sections like before, g) adjuncts courses being cancelled puts a toll on their financials, h) livelihood being harm by an algorithm, i) for next semester, why cant we just go back to the old system, j) this system is not intuitive, k) give students both choices to use. c) Tell me something good. S. Steers highlighted Center of Academics Support, they helped us find a really great tutor, had targeted school study sessions for an hour once a week, and for an hour where students can go up is huge especially in a class like Speech. Thank you so much Center for Academic Support. Were going to send a lot of students there! A. Simone commented how amazing their tutor, Kemira was. 12.Upcoming Items: (M.
