Who is it designed to serve? Will the program offer an Associate Degree? A Certificate of Achievement? Purpose/Goals. To provide a Certificate of Achievement in Three Dimensional Design and media that can go with our successful Graphic Communications Certificate Program. In addition, to support student completion of courses which provide experiences with 3D media such as ceramics and metal which are needed in sculpture and design programs at transfer institutions. In addition, this Certificate can provide, through the Three Dimensional Design course, experience with a Makerspace (digitally programmed fabrication lab) if available). Also, this certificate program can provide an experience of self-designed project inception, process and completion that is empowering to students of widely varied backgrounds, and who wish to finish a program in a relatively short time relative to the AA in Fine Arts or Graphic Communication. Rationale What role would this program fulfill in the college curriculum? Why is it important to offer this program? This will be a Certificate of Achievement that will serve our transfer students by offering a state-approved certificate of 18 units that they can earn on the way to getting an AA in Fine Arts or Graphic Communications, and that will better prepare them for transfer into three dimensional design/fine arts fields, such as a 3D Art and Design BFA at CSUEB or becoming a Design Major at UC Davis. It can also provide hands-on experience with materials for students who plan to transfer in fields such as engineering or architecture. Curriculum and Needs Assessment/Feasibility List the proposed new courses for the program, including the title, number of units, and a brief course description. Art 66: Introductory Hand-built Ceramics. 3 Units. This course explores the use of hand-building with clay as an expressive and utilitarian medium. Lectures will highlight the use of this versatile medium from contemporary, western and non-western cultures and historical perspectives, and students will research and discuss historical examples and apply them to their projects. List the course requirements for the major. Art 11: Three Dimensional Design Art 12 OR 20: Design Drawing or Introduction to Drawing Art 47 Color Theory Art 62 OR 64: Introduction to Ceramic Sculpture, or Introduction to Ceramics through the Pottery Wheel Art 60: Introductory Concepts of Sculpture Art 86: Animation and 3D Modeling List the proposed sequence of program-specific courses and the projected enrollment: Fall-Year 1 (list the courses to be offered each term and the projected enrollment) Art 11: Three Dimensional Design (with a Maker-space (digitally programmed fabrication lab) component if available) Art 12 OR 20: Design Drawing or Introduction to Drawing Art 47 Color Theory Spring-Year 1 Art 62 OR 64 OR 66: Introduction to Ceramic Sculpture, or Introduction to Ceramics Through the Pottery Wheel or Introductory Hand-built Ceramics Art 60: Introductory Concepts of Sculpture Art 86: Animation and 3D Modeling Fall-Year 2 Spring-Year 2 Projected number of students in the program*: 30 Fall-Year 1 _____30______; Spring Year 1 ___30 Fall-Year 2 ___________; Spring Year 2 _____________ * Unduplicated total headcount in program-specific courses. Enrollment projections are based on: enrollments in similar programs in the college Projected Annual FTES (to be completed by the Office of Instruction) Year 1 ___80_________ Year 2 ____________ Do other colleges in the district or in neighboring districts offer a similar program? If so, provide the rationale for duplicating it at Ӱɴý. DVC offers a 23 unit Certificate of Achievement in Ceramics which has a two shared courses with this proposed program, but this proposed program is a much more broad-based introduction to a large variety of tools and media. For new CTE programs: provide labor market information and job market projections that support the establishment of this program. Sources for this information are provided in the Program and Course Approval Handbook (Chancellors Office). Also include the results of discussions with key local employers/potential advisory committee members. What other departments at the college could be affected by adding this program? Explain and include the results of preliminary discussions with the affected departments. Other departments not affected, although this program could be connected to and supportive of other programs such as engineering if students collaborated in a Makerspace (digital fabrication lab) project team. Staffing Describe the initial staffing needed for the program, including the approximate number of full time and part time faculty and classified staff. No new staffing. Will new hires be required in order to offer the program? If so, are the pools of full time and/or part time faculty expected to be sufficient? How will the staffing needs change in years 2-4? Operating Budget Outline the initial budget required to fund the program. Briefly explain any budget item as needed to make the purpose clear. As this program uses already existing courses and facilities, so there are no budget needs at this time. Staffing (Types: hourly classified, reassigned time, stipends, student do not include faculty or permanent staff) Supplies Consultants Travel Interprogram (Copies, postage, etc.) Equipment (list all major equipment) See Instructional Technology Department for recommendations and cost estimates What additional costs should be anticipated in subsequent years? We will be needing to replace one of our gas kilns and likely one electric kiln also, they are sustaining more and more intense use with increased ceramics offerings as well as the compressed calendar. Facilities Describe the facilities needed for the program in the first year (classrooms, labs, offices, other). What additional facilities needs should be anticipated in subsequent years? This program could be connected to a digital fabrication lab through a component in the Three Dimensional Design class, if a digital fabrication lab becomes available.
