Public Comment and announcements: Laurie announced she is glad to be back. She participated in a site visit to the Fashion Institute as a Distance Education representative for Accreditation. She has some things to share regarding accreditation training and a proposal for us. Members expressed an interest in a future discussion of where the Distance Education Committee is headed. Our vision and direction in the future since the Distance Education Committee is currently without a home. Who will we report to? This will be a future agenda topic, perhaps prepared and planned for when the new college president is selected. A suggestion was made that Distance Education should be a department. Agenda Approved with changes Michael Norris will not be able to join us, delete #7. Add Denise to the agenda. Minutes from March 7 Approved. Minutes from March 21 Approved with correction to remove first sentence under BlackBoard updates. Regular Blackboard Update: Our current Blackboard 8 is running smoothly. For the April 25th meeting Clayton would like us to prepare a list of things to think about to help with the technical side of Blackboard and the slow down during finals. Perhaps ask faculty to stagger finals. All the online classes have started now. No more short term sections starting. Blackboard 9 The contract just arrived from Blackboard and Denise was happy to announce that it is an Enterprise version. She has not had a chance to review it but it does have a full blown version of Learn. There is not an assessment component. Mike Becker has been busy setting up servers while Denise has been working on the trainings. Editing and maintaining sites is located differently in 9.0. For the April 12th training Denise has 18 signed up so far with others who have expressed interest. How to edit, content, home pages, control panel and discussion of the test site sandbox will be addressed in the April 12th training. Once folks get to play in the site she will do a training a week through May. These will be more in-depth for the grading center, assignments, etc. A survey will be given at the end of the April 12th training to ask for input on what faculty want to cover in the trainings also. Once the faculty has the basics and practice in it, they will be ready for the new things. For student training a link will be placed on the Ӱɴý home page to information on BB 9 and a FAQ. Faculty usually walk their students through BlackBoard during the first week of a course also. The conversion process has been positive and seamless with timing. Laurie will present the 2nd hour on April 12th. She will go over best practices and policy. Margaret will post the Best Practices Guide and Distance Education Policy paper on the DE website. Accreditation Training Report Laurie was part of the Distance Education team for the accreditation visit to the Fashion Institute in the Los Angeles area. In her training for this she learned what the team is looking for in Distance Education. An idea to use a checklist for online faculty came from this training. A checklist example was handed out to give us a sample on how to prepare one specifically geared towards Ӱɴý best practices and policy that we have developed in this committee. The checklist would be a good way to document and show evidence of quality student/faculty interaction in an online Ӱɴý course. Laurie would be willing to prepare a draft and bring it to the April 25th meeting for review and action. We should be preparing for accreditation. Faculty should support this checklist as another piece in our developing efforts for quality online teaching. Flex trainings leading to certification in online teaching can be developed through professional development or through CCC Confer training. These would not be mandatory, but could eventually be routinely required for faculty who want to teach an online course.
